Calling baby masculine form of my own name?

Purpletopaz42 · 08/12/2022 18:13

So I have a name, which has a masculine and feminine form so for example Henry and Henrietta. Well my grandad was called Henry, I am named Henrietta after him but I'm pregnant with a boy and I'd like to call him Henry, after my grandad, who has since passed but I don't know if people will just think I've named the baby after myself or if it will get confusing, thoughts? Thank you

Lilibet was actually what HM called herself as a toddler because she couldn't pronounce Elizabeth and the name stuck among her family.

That's how many nicknames are created. My family nickname is a (unconventional) short form of my full name.

Elizabeth was named after her mother and called Lilibet to differentiate between them

Exactly - she had to find another name to differentiate herself!

Give your child his/her OWN name

No one cares but they will be talking about you behind your back

If no-one cares why would they be talking about OP behind her back?
If they're talking behind her back then why would OP care?
If they're the sort of people to talk behind her back about her choice of baby name then they're not very pleasant people anyway.

My inlaw suggested her own name for our baby.
She was robustly told that the baby is not a mini me and entitled to her own identity.
Middle names are just about ok as long as the name is actually a nice one.
A female and male version of a name can be very different. Michael. Ok. Michaela. Bleurgh. Paul. Boring but ok. Paula. Plain and dated.
Names tend to fit in better with their generation if actually.in keeping with their peers and not their parents or grandparents names, which are likely of an era.
Shows a lack of imagination, willingness to see your child as a separate person and would be confusing.
And yes screams parents own sense of self importance is more important than the child's right to individuality.
So for all those reasons it would be a no for me.

Do it,ignore all the kill joys that think it is narcissistic;would they be saying that if you were father and son? Our beloved Queen Elizabeth was named after her mother and called Lilibet to differentiate between them, didn't do her any harm.

Yes, I would as would several other posters as clearly stated upthread. And I certainly wouldn’t be looking to the royal family for advice on how to raise children.

I would just assume, correctly, that it was a family name.

As opposed to a non family name Confused

arthurfonzerelli · 09/12/2022 16:35

I think it's great. Don't think anybody would bat an eyelid. I would just assume, correctly, that it was a family name.

Firebird83 · 09/12/2022 16:25

I don’t see the issue, I think it’s fine.

Dalekjastninerels · 09/12/2022 16:02

My first name is a feminine version of my Dad's first name and I like being named after him.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 16:00

If you think no one has commented behind your back on your kids names you would be wrong as names are a personal preference

I would never ever think that Hmm. I fully expect many people with different (worse Wink) taste to dislike my children's names!

But I'm not coming to mumsnett specifically asking for their opinions! The op is.

Cheeseandhoney · 09/12/2022 15:35

I find it weird when men do it, and I find I’m reacting rhe same with a woman wanting to do it. I believe children should have their own name and identity . The child I assume will have your surname, for me, anything more is not ok. Worst case use Henry as a middle name, but give the kid their own identity

@SummaLuvin I think you are a little too invested in what otters call their kids
For some nationalities etc its very normal to name kids after dad etc
And a female/ name version can be very different

I’m really tickled by the idea of otter baby names threads 😁

@toastofthetown but why if its a crap name individual or not, no guarantee your child will go thanks mum , really appreciate that
Where as named after someone loved etc has a lot of meaning
Like will and willow are not the same , the nickname could be but you avoid that
Whats worse is people actually being so judgy of others ,

Why do you care so much that people don’t like parents naming children after themselves? You’ve posted seven times in very rapid succession. The OP asked what I thought of it, and I replied that I think it’s weird, unimaginative or conceited. I think children should be given an identity which is separate to their parents. I assumed that the OP wanted a range of opinions on why people think, with the honesty that accompanies anonymity. And I don’t think anyone thinks any name has a guarantee their child will like it. As a parent you have to make a decision and hope that your child it agrees it’s a good one, but that’s the case whatever name you give them.

healthadvice123 · 09/12/2022 15:15

@Purplemagnolias i think narcissistic is going a bit far and a bit judgey as many nationalities do this , The OP is naming after her GF and honestly in real life I don't think anymore judgement than you get from any name.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 15:13

I don't why it seen as normal for guys to have a son with the same name as them

Normal? Confused I find that pretty weird, unimaginative and narcissistic.

Purplemagnolias · 09/12/2022 15:12

but why would you give crap what someone else you are not close to thinks

The op asked for people's honest opinions, so posters are giving theirs

Personally I find it narcissistic to do this, there are so many beautiful names to choose from

Blendandmix · 09/12/2022 15:11

I don't why it seen as normal for guys to have a son with the same name as them but for a woman- who has carried and birthed them it's weird?

Go for it if you like it op

healthadvice123 · 09/12/2022 15:10

It was actually very normal thing to do years ago in the uk for men and even some wormen
My auntie has the same name as my nan but was actually named after my nans aunt, as my nan never ever went by her full name and most people never even got the connection.

I honestly think in real life most won't be bothered , mumsnet is like another universe at times and I bet a lot saying no its this its that , have had plenty talk about them about their choice if names for their children too

Sounds fine and the poster who said lucy and luca etc I wouldn't even put them together particularly
