Boys' names - can anyone help please?

Could you please tell me what you think of the following names:

Are any of them too common (chavy?) and what sort of little boy do they make you think of?

Gabriel
Joseph/Jo
Charles/Charlie
James
Oliver
Tobias/Toby

Surely Ned is a shortening for (usually) Edward? Hadn't heard it as a shortening for Benedict, but I can't belive that anyone would use it as a name in it's own right? I think it's a nice nickname.

I like most of your names, but would assume that a Rufus had red hair, and not that keen on Monty - I had a friend called Jonty though (short for Jonathon) which is cool. Prefer Benedict to Benjamin - just more unusual. I think Toby is a bit of a pet name - maybe because we had a dog clled that, definately prefer Tobias, and like Tobit too. Josiah is a bit biblical (although we wanted an Ezra, so can't really talk!). William is very nice.

None of the names bring anything especially to mind. My cousin is called Gabriel and he was an angelic little boy - now he is a bit of a hunk.

what sounds Okay yah in Primrose Hill does not necessarily travel so well to Maryhill

Hmmm - i was aware of the connotations (sp?) for Ned in Scotland, but was hoping that the majority of people living in England (as I am) weren't.

Poor Ned, I feel sorry for him now....

Chunk, if youre planning on calling your baby Ned you may as well just call it Chav or Thug, it's what it means in Scotland.
My brother is always going on about the 'Neds'.

so basically, what is coming out of this thread, is that if you want lots of people to LIKE the name you choose, you need a top 10 (or at least top 20) name...

I will say that, generally, people do like names if they like the kid and not if they don't. If you love one of the more obscure ones, go for it. None of these names are off the wall, your child will encounter several other kids with these names. None of them are chavvy, whatever that means, except perhaps one...

Don't give your child a lowest common denominator name.

We are considering Ned for our bump due in 3 weeks - lots of people seem to think its awful, but it makes me think of that massivley cute-but-naughty little boy in the digital camera advert (the one where he bashes the camera around, under the tap etc?). If I have a little boy i definately want him to run around the garden in hand knitted jumpers and wellies and lots of dirt....
