Boys' names - can anyone help please?

Love Montgomery.Wanted to call ds2 it but wasn't allowed

We know a Rufus who is a gorgeous little guy and has a brother Felix, be brave and be different. Our ds is Cameron, one of only 2 in the school, but becoming a little too popular now.

I agree that consensus is going to be impossible here unless you pick a name like James or Oliver which is hard to object to.

Personally I would avoid a common name. My name is less common and I like this. DS1 says he likes his (frankly old-fashioned) name because ?I am the only one in school?.

DS1 has 3 Jameses in his class, DD has 3 Williams in her year (60 children), 3 Olivers in DS2?s year (40 children). It?s just confusing if DS1 says ?can I play with James? or whatever. But otherwise I like all the names on yr list. Gabriel was a partic fave of mine.

Gabriel - I like it but immediately think of the Angel Gabriel

Charles/Charlie - no
James - yes (my dad's name so am biased)
Oliver - Twist! More please, sir? But I like it
Tobias/Toby - no
Bejamin/Ben - so-so
Benedict/Ben/Ne d - thinking of monks
William/Will - so-so
Joshua/Josh - no
Josiah - no, argh
Rufus - yes
Montgomery/Monty - no, please... not Monty!

Gabriel - not to my liking
Joseph/Jo - love the name Joseph (can't use it as Joe doesn't work with my surname)
Charles/Charlie - I like this; friend used it for her baby recently and really suits him.
James - nice, prefer as middle name for some reason though
Oliver - his was our choice if DD had been a boy
Tobias/Toby - I like Tobias but not sure about Toby
Bejamin/Ben - quite like this, but again not sure about Ben on it's own
Benedict/Ben/Ned - not keen on Benedict; like Ned though
William/Will - I like this
Joshua/Josh - I like Joshua but not keen on Josh
Josiah - not keen
Rufus - not keen
Montgomery/Monty - not keen although Monty would grow on me

My dh & I quickly agreed on girls names but had a lot more trouble with boys. In the end we had a short list of 8 or 10, that we both quite liked, so at about 38 weeks, I wrote them on individual bits of paper, a set each. Then independently we put them in order, favourite first. DS got DH's 1st choice as 1st name (my 2nd) and 2nd choice as 2nd name (my 3rd choice). Might help!

James - Can't go wrong with James. Very popular in these parts
Oliver - Love it
Tobias/Toby - Like both of these
Bejamin/Ben - Great name! Good for baby, boy and man
Benedict/Ben/Ne d - Same as above but prefer Benjamin
William/Will - Love this name but know loaaaads of Williams and Wills
Joshua/Josh - Don't like this
Josiah - Not keen on this
Rufus - No. Dogs name. Or a really conservative privately educated long haired boy (jmo obviously)
Montgomery/Monty - No. Same as above.

anyway isn't Ed really the shortversion of Edwin/Edward...where does the n come from?

Rufus- hmmm, this will always be a dogs name to me, sorry (but it is actually a nice name, so, tis a shame really)

Montgomery/Monty- Montgomery is a bit posh...but it is a lovely sounbding name, I just would never have been brave enough, I think...

As you can see, I'm not keen on shortened names, unless they are actually the childs official name...I can't see the point in calling a child one thing , when not planning to actually using that name to call the child by...

I have a Ned (short for Edward). And he is lovely. We have just cancelled our holiday in Fort William

Rufus is a lovely name, I wanted to call DS Rufus but DH wouldn't let me (it is one of his middle names though - yes he has more than one, we are THAT pretentious).

Monty is really cool too but it is my dog's name so can't get past that (I have wasted one of my favourite girl's names on the other dog so I do actually give my dogs names I really really like).

Love Benedict - would have chosen it for my son but it's the name of an ex so don't think DH would have been too keen!! Like the fact that Ben is not uncommon but Benedict is. (if that makes sense)

Poncy names bring it on - much better than being one of the 5 Williams or Joe in your class.
But there is the rule of thought that your just setting them up for a life of teasing - sorry for my two then.

Jo is so not a girls name!! It's an abbreviation of Joseph

Can't decide whether or not I love: Montgomery/Monty

Others are all fine. Except Rufus which sounds abit Hooray-Henry to me.
