Classic but not super common boys name

I like the sound and vibe of the name Alexander, but would prefer something less common. It doesn’t need to be really rare- I’d prefer it if everyone has heard of it. Something where there’s less likely to be lots in the class. Without meaning to offend others, not keen on names I think of as more trend-led/of the moment like Arlo/Albie/ Roman. Not keen on what I’d think of as cheeky chappy names like Ronnie/Alfie. Not keen on more 80s names I see suggested on theses forums like Simon/Peter/Thomas. Names like Vincent/Felix/Quentin bit too left -field for me. Like Laurence but can’t use.
If you didn’t die of boredom reading that, please help !

@tweedlee , I think Dylan is awful when it's said as Dillun. Dylan (Dullann) is ok for a welsh man in his 50s.

Was that your shortlist or your DC?

Not a PM called Dominic please.

tweedlee · 26/01/2023 12:28

I have boys and my rule was a name that people would have heard of but not common, definitely not trendy and also could be the name of a prime minister (someone told me that!!!)

So we had:
Sebastian
Jasper
Barnaby
Nathaniel
Dominic
Finlay

I think Dylan is awful

Iunderstandit · 26/01/2023 12:24

If I’d had a boy Robin, Alexander and Sebastian would have been my list. Also love Christopher but it would inevitably get shortened to the super popular Chris!

No! Still looking like Alexander by default maybe. Really appreciating all of the suggestions though-thanks!

I think that would be a great pick and it sounds like you keep coming back to it. A lovely classic choice.

That sounds very Russian

It is, or at least Eastern European but most names aren’t really British if you look up their origins. A lot seem to be from Greece. There’s been a number of characters on TV including Stranger Things with that name. Just thought it could be an alternative to Alexander (still an Alex) and it’s been elected a ‘cool’ name at the uni.

Refreshmentsanyone · 20/01/2023 16:59

Sounds like popular names in brothers year group.

He also had

Jonathan is classic, Jonathon isn't.
Sullivan is a surname
Wesley is a surname
Chester is a city
Theo & Theodore combined would be the top boy's name in the UK by far

I know lots of Alexanders

I know at least 5 male and female Alexes. I would need their surname to know who was meant.

Less popular but classic names might be
Raphael
Quentin
Dominic
Caspar
Magnus

I got stuck on Peter Simon and Thomas apparently being 80s names. Was it the 80s that the bible was popular then? 😆

All the people I know with those names were born in 1960s, though Thomas has made a comeback - DC have a few Tom friends.
