Bree

Could you comment on Bree for a girl, please? Just Bree, as a full name.

Does it sound contemporary enough or a bit dated? Husband and I seem to always go for names that are a bit past the current fashion, but we don't really mind so much. I'm just a bit curious because its sound fits better into the late 90s or early 00s, I guess, when Brittany, Brianna, Brooke, Bryony and Bethany were popular.

Others on our list are Angel, Annabelle (decided Annabell won't work), Sophie, Chloe, Jenna, Jolie but might take Jolie off due to being too associated with the actress (thanks for suggesting Joely but I don't really like how it looks).

Incoming nickname = Cheesy. Not great....

Theoldwoman · 03/12/2022 14:20

DDS best friend is Bree. Not something I personally would pick but it’s easy to spell and pronounce.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/12/2022 12:15

My main thought is cheese and I think it would be for most people, so I wouldn’t

Annabel, Sophie and Chloe are all nice

Jenna is to 80s dated, Angel is too weird (and the pressure!), Jolie is also too weird (and again The Pressure)

Angelica, Josephine nn Josie, or Jennifer are all ok, but prefer the options above

SaltyLemons · 03/12/2022 12:08

I know a Brea

SilverOtter · 03/12/2022 12:08

I think it's quite pretty.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/12/2022 12:07

It's either a Narnian talking horse, or a village near the Shire.

Dreamingof3 · 03/12/2022 11:46

I actually really like it. No confusion on pronunciation, easy to spell, and only 15 babies named Bree last year!

We have it on our middle name list for our next girl!

gettingolderbutcooler · 03/12/2022 11:25

BishyBarnyBee · 03/12/2022 08:10

Will always be a Narnian talking horse for me.

Same for me!!!!

geraniumsandsunshine · 03/12/2022 10:53

Breanna

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 03/12/2022 10:38

Don’t let her read Lord of the Rings.

Mummyeyes · 03/12/2022 10:35

"Brígh. f. The original meaning of this namé is probably 'high, noble'... Was borne by thirteen saints.

In modern Irish brígh means "power strength, vigour, force, efficacy, virtue: substance, essence, meaning.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/12/2022 10:18

Cheese!
it is a lovely name, but it is a cheese!

Jenna is lovely.
how about Phoebe?

RosesAndHellebores · 03/12/2022 10:12

We knew of a child called Bree in about 1995 and we nodded and smiled.

I like the idea of Sabrina or Gabriella with Bree as a nn. But the sad truth is that parents don't chose nicknames that endure beyond close family.

Angel always makes me think of Angel Clare in Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I now a female Angel but she is the antithesis of the name.

Cleo, perhaps more contemporary than Chloe. I like Sophie but perhaps a bit dated. Hebe?

GroggyLegs · 03/12/2022 10:03

I quite like the sound, but the obvious connection is cheese.

Not a fan of diminutives as birth certificate names full stop TBH. My unpopular opinion is that kids should be left with some choice of how they want to be known as adults - e.g. Lottie or Charlotte.

FettleOfKish · 03/12/2022 09:57

I knew a Bree, she got absolutely ripped for it all the time, cheese jokes all round.

She was also a horrible self-absorbed bitch, but that was probably unrelated to her name tbf.

fairycupcakes · 03/12/2022 09:54

You can’t call your dd a type of cheese as a full name. If you want to call her Bree please give her a full name where you can nn her Bree if you must but she has options as she grows to be called other things.

also if you like Jolie but don’t like the association with Angelina Jolie may I suggest Jovie to you? Similar sound so you might like it but no association with the actress :) @hazeleyes94

Purpleavocado · 03/12/2022 09:50

What will you call her siblings? Cheddar and Stilton?

The cheese doesn't have two syllables.

TrashyPanda · 03/12/2022 09:40

Cheese

love Jenna and Annabel

OldTinHat · 03/12/2022 09:39

Never heard of it before but instantly thought of the cheese with an incorrect spelling.

Jammy62 · 03/12/2022 09:36

Love Bree. Also like Chloe. I like Annabel but not Annabelle

xJ0y · 03/12/2022 09:31

Much prefer Annabel, Jenna or Sophie.
Bree nms but I like Gabriela so if you use Bree it coukd be 'short' for gabriela

ditalini · 03/12/2022 09:31

I immediately thought "that's a horse name".

Not keen tbh. As a human name it looks like it should be short for something, I think most of those odd (to my eyes/ears) WASP short names are really nicknames originally.

CaronPoivre · 03/12/2022 09:28

The Brees I know are two older ish Irish women with full name Bridget. I like Bridget and think Bree is a nice diminutive. The women are both absolute joys, so good association for me. Certainly inoffensive and sets tone of fun and positivity. It’s a happy sort of name.

LlynTegid · 03/12/2022 09:27

Not a choice I would make. Open invitation to unkind comments or worse at school.
