Sibling names too similar????

MrsT36 · 03/12/2022 06:53

We’ve just found out we’re having a baby girl and are over the moon!
we already have a little boy called Hugo. The problem is, the only girls name we can agree on is Margot/Margaux.

it was the name we picked when we didn’t know Hugo’s sex and we do still love it.
I just worry they’re too similar and it looks like we have no imagination. Also worry they’ll grow up to resent having similar names and feel they don’t have their own identity.

Would love some thoughts/opinions/advice on this and alternative name suggestions please!

@WarriorsComeOutToPlayaaay , most of those names are nothing like Margot.

Bridgette looks wrong. Brigitte and Bridget maybe but not a mishmash of them.

WarriorsComeOutToPlayaaay · 03/12/2022 11:00

i think they are a little too similar sounding.

Names that give me a similar vibe to Margot are:

Claudia
Claudine
Odette
Noelle
Allegra
Elodie
Mariella
Mirabel
Isobel
Josephine
Sophia
Hester
Helena
Juliet
Yvette
Bridgette

Hugo and Margot are nice names but together they sound cringey

Fivebeanchilli · 03/12/2022 10:45

I don't actually think they are too similar. In my accent the -go bit of the name is much less emphasised than the first half.
However Margot is becoming super popular so I'd avoid for that reason. I know a 3 year old Margot who has 2 others in her nursery class!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/12/2022 10:44

I do t think they’re that similar, it’s just the same ending sound. I know other siblings with names with the same ending sound or syllables, eg: I know a set of brothers called Archie and Charlie and siblings Harry, Emily and Lily. I think you’re overthinking it to be honest and the names are fine together.

PatChauncey · 03/12/2022 10:40

I have 2 DC with the same end sound on their names and it's a bloody nuisance!

It was something I hadn't considered at all before having children, but really wish I had.

fairycupcakes · 03/12/2022 10:36

Both are gorgeous but yes quite matchy matchy

when I saw Hugo, Clara came to mind instantly. I think they are both very classy sounding. Not sure if that’s something you may like @MrsT36 x

Marguerite is pearl in Latin and is a Daisy in French.

FlamingJingleBells · 03/12/2022 08:30

Marguerite and Hugo go very well together. The name has lots of nn possibilities: Maggie, Madge & Rita.
Marguerite means pearl and is the French version of the classic name Margaret.

HowForNow · 03/12/2022 08:23

The kids will only be known as a sibling pair for a really short proportion of their lives. By the time they're teens they won't be thought of as Hugo & Margot just as individuals. People won't know Hugo's sister is Margot or vice versa. So if you love Margot I'd do it. You can ride it out if you get any snippy comments but you probably won't. I know siblings called Lola, Arlo, Milo it's no issue at all.

Luana1 · 03/12/2022 08:11

I think it's fine OP. I know families where the girls all end in the 'a' sound and I've never given it a thought until now

HuntingoftheSnark · 03/12/2022 07:59

Too similar.
Matilda? Miranda?

urbanbuddha · 03/12/2022 07:48

They are too samey.
Marina?

lifeinthehills · 03/12/2022 07:48

It could work. They are similar but different enough.

MassiveSalad22 · 03/12/2022 07:45

Oh darn! You should have chosen a different boy name and saved Margo if it was the only one you liked! Love both Hugo and Margot though.

For me they’re a bit too samey but I know loads of matchy siblings - Maggie and Maddie, Lana and Lola, Henry and Harriet, 4 boys all ending in -an. So loads of people will think it’s fine.

I guess you could hyphenate - Margot-Marie or something - or use for a middle name.

Stardewbeam · 03/12/2022 07:41

They are very similar and people will probably think you’ve deliberately chosen them to match. Personally I’d look for something different but they are names you will use every day so if you really love it then go for it.

Mumofgirls2017 · 03/12/2022 07:38
