The adult one I know says Roo-bin but I’ve also heard it pronounced more like Roo-bun. How do you say it?

I pronounce Reuben like Robin, but with an "oo" instead of an "aw."

CinderellaFant · 02/12/2022 16:13

Rube-in

Highlyflavouredgravy · 02/12/2022 12:57

Roo-b'n. Stress on first syllable.

Same.

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 12:53

Kangaroo rhymes with poo, not with pew, or do but not due/dew

I say Helen as Hellun and Medicine as Medsin

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/12/2022 12:25

Possibly other accents as well, of course.

Pronouncing Helen Hell-in isn’t an affectation, it’s an accent

Which one?

RPish - it’s quite common in London, SE, near SW - so to say Eleanor as El-lin-uh rather than El-un-uh or Medicine as Med-cin rather than Med-sun

KnickerlessParsons · 02/12/2022 12:21

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 10:36

@KnickerlessParsons , Due and Dew rhyme with Hugh and Pew.
Roo rhymes with Who and Poo

Yes! Not kangaroo though.

Thereisnolight · 02/12/2022 10:39

Roo-bin and Roo-bun and Roo-Ben and Roo-buhn and Roob-schwa-n all sound the same to me.

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 10:36

Rew like due or dew which is the same as Kanga-roo.

Where I come from Rew, due and dew aren't pronounced like kangaroo.

Kangaroo has an ooooo sound, like poo.

Rew, due and dew are pronounced like jewel or hue or hew or music.

KirstenBlest · 02/12/2022 09:09

@GlassDeli , lots of people say Helen as Hellin.

RandomMess · 02/12/2022 00:37

Yeah

Rew/roo-buhn with unhealthy first syllable emphasised, 2nd very short.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/12/2022 00:33

fairycupcakes · 01/12/2022 12:47

Roo buhn

This.

RandomMess · 02/12/2022 00:32

North England accent

I say Rew-bn

It's not Ben or Bin and not quite bun so "bn"

Rew like due or dew which is the same as Kanga-roo.

KnickerlessParsons · 02/12/2022 00:22

I'd say Rew-bin. Not Roo.

Barleysugar86 · 02/12/2022 00:16

Rue - Ben for the one I know.

soulinablackberrypie · 02/12/2022 00:08

I've always heard it pronounced Roobin, although the analogy with Helen (which I definitely don't pronounce with an -in) is now making me wonder whether everyone I've heard saying it was wrong.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/12/2022 19:24

GlassDeli · 01/12/2022 15:48

ROO-ben, with a neutral vowel on the 'ben' making it halfway to 'bun'.

It isn't Roo-bin. This sounds like an affectation, similar to pronouncing Helen as Hell-in.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/12/2022 19:23

ROO-bun

But it’s going to vary with accent. It’s nice anyway.

FlamingoBabe · 01/12/2022 18:50

Roo-bin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/12/2022 15:50

Roo bun
