Annabelle or Annabel? Does Annabell look misspelt to you?

Is Annabell a nice spelling or does it look misspelt to you? We have Annabelle on our list but I'm leaning more towards Annabell now.

When I asked about Annabelle many people told me to use Annabel instead:

  • Which spelling do you prefer and why?
  • If you met someone named this, how would you spell it?
  • Do you pronounce them differently?
  • Which one is the original? Does anyone know?

Some comments on the spellings:

Annabell - is German and we have some heritage but the most important thing to me is that I sort of like the way it looks. Does it look misspelt to you or fine?

Annabelle - I really like it but I slightly emphasise the -belle part which I don't do for the other two. I like all pronunciations, though. Sometimes I worry about the doll or that it's too frilly.

Annabel - feels classic.

For some reason Annabell strikes the right balance for us. Annabelle is lovely but sometimes feels a bit much. Annabel is classic. Annabell feels classic but not frilly. She'll probably have to spell it anyway and I guess Annabell is easy to explain because you can say "two Ns and two Ls"?

I'm Annabel - sometimes people default to spelling my name as Annabelle, but I much prefer Annabel, less Disney Princess in my mind 😄

Annabell looks wrong.
Annabelle is the popular spelling now, whereas it was the less frilly Annabel.
Bear in mind that she'll probably get called Anna or Annie.

I like both Annabel and Annabelle, slight preference for the former in its simplicity. Annabell looks misspelled to me (as a Brit) and will be a PITA to spell out all the time.

I've only ever know Annabels, do that spelling looks right to me. If you have German heritage and it's a grad forklift g though do what you like!

For me, Annabelle is lovely and the spelling I'm most familiar with; Annabell does look misspelled (but I'm aware that is purely because I don't have any German friends/family, so I'm not used to that spelling!); and Annabel makes me think of Baby Bel.
