Help!

We are expecting our second child, Irish living in London. Our daughter has an Irish name and we are keen to give DS one too. But we can't find a single one we like or haven't had to rule out. I've googled and googled, need some serious inspiration!

Can't use the below for various reasons:
Sean
Oisin
Niall
Seamus
Conor
Liam
Ruairi
Fionn

Considering but not loving:
Tadhg
Conan

Malachy?

TheSausageKingofChicago · 27/11/2022 00:01

Ciaran
Oisin (my favourite - Roisin is also my favourite girls name)

KnickerlessParsons · 27/11/2022 00:01

My favourite Irish boy's name is Jarlath

TheSausageKingofChicago · 27/11/2022 00:00

I’m not Irish but went to school with a lot of lads of Irish descent (NW).
Names I came across and liked were:
Malachi
Seamus
Feargal
Patrick
Sean
Niall

Declan is nice. It's not too "out there" for England.

Wheelerdeeler · 26/11/2022 23:54

Oran
Declan

There are lots of ways to spell Tadhg!

Flooper · 26/11/2022 23:51

Even people who like the name Tadhg misspell it.

AndAway · 26/11/2022 23:48

Love Tadgh and Donnchadh.

Snoooozzze · 26/11/2022 23:47

Irish names I like for a boy are:

Dermot
Brendan
Keiran
Colm
Fionn
Aodhan
Senan
Caolan

noideaboutanything · 26/11/2022 23:41

I have a ten year old Oran. Irish spelling is Odhrain I think but we liked the simpler spelling. I wanted to keep my Irish roots alive but not make it tricky living in England. I’ve only met one other and I love the name.

Any Enda living in England would get called Edna.

cantba · 26/11/2022 23:36

Thady

DumDeeDoh · 26/11/2022 23:33

I love Aodh (pron A) but again could be difficult in the UK.

Conall, Ultan, Fionn, Fintan, Liam, Daragh, Oisin, Éanna, Enda

I have a Diarmuid in Ireland which is still sometimes called Dermot! (But I still like it!)

chevvyroo · 26/11/2022 23:33

Lorcan or Darragh ❤️

WonderWoop · 26/11/2022 23:31

@caitlinrose thanks for the watch out on Tadhg! That’s what I worry about Conan too. Cuan - I’m not super keen on using fadas unless I have to…

@Wrongsideofpennines similarly on Tadhg that worries me a bit. Planning on staying in London realistically I would say

those suggesting Dara/Daire/Darragh… I had forgotten about this one. My heart would say Daire but my head would say use one of the other spellings

Darragh
Milo

WonderWoop · 26/11/2022 23:27

Didn’t expect so many responses!! Thanks all so much.

there’s a few names I had previously discounted but might add back to the list. Rian (don’t love Cian… makes me think of Kian from Westlife!), Cormac (don’t know why it doesn’t feel massively modern though), Oran is nice, Ruan/Ruadhan possibly

had thought Luan was a girls name @GrazingSheep (not sure why), but quite like it

@RoyKeaneisRight Uinseann - how do you say it?

If your intention is to remain in the UK long term I would suggest something that isn't too tricky to pronounce by sight. (Conor, Fintan, Ronan, Sean etc) School will be frustrating if they have to forever explain something like Tadhg. Even if the teacher learns quickly, other kids/parents won't and they will forever receive invitations to Tad, Tide, Tiger, Tieg etc

You could maybe give them a much more Irish sounding/spelt middle name.

Kellaher · 26/11/2022 23:15

Enda

Turlough
