We have Delilah at the top of our list for a girl but wanted to hear from you guys, if you have/know a Delilah do you/they always get "why, why, why Delilah?!"

For me the associations to woman I song and Bible are so strong to make the name unusable. Have you read the story lately? Thankfully Jezebel is not a name that has become popular

Enko · 24/11/2022 11:00

I like it but yes I get Tom Jones singing in my head and now tnx to this thread I'm also singing hey there Delilah. Very odd combo w Tom's voice..
Ita anoretty name though

MerryChristmasToYou · 24/11/2022 07:24

@HotchPotched , it's not unusual (TJ reference intended Smile).
It's in the top 50 names used in England & Wales last year. It also falls into the Lily, Lila, Layla, Lola, Lyra, Luna type names so is a bit samey.
@Jamesandthegiantpeach74 , people would compliment the name anyway.

Diverseopinions · 24/11/2022 06:14

When she's older, close friends are likely to affectionately slip into calling her Lyla, as these are the two syllable sounds in the name which are most prominent. I can't see close friends always saying Delilah. Unless she is always 'Dee Dee', from the start, then that will be used. But Dee Dee doesn't really sound like Delilah, so you've almost lost the name.

That would be the problem for me that it is likely to get shortened away from the name. Lyla sounds like other very popular names: Layla, Lilla, Lola, which maybe isn't the effect you are going for.

Mrstwiddle · 24/11/2022 06:11

Another one agreeing that the biblical reference makes it a no goer.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 24/11/2022 06:09

As a stoke fan .. no I wouldn't

lifeinthehills · 24/11/2022 05:35

I just can't get past the biblical context of the name, so it's too loaded a name for me.

Theladyinred · 24/11/2022 05:33

It’s my favourite girls name atm .

Between the song and the biblical story, it doesn't seem like a great choice to me.

Oops, meant to agree with this one! 😂

Agree.

Yes, this 100%.

Agree.

ilovemotorways · 23/11/2022 23:33

I absolutely love it and it's on my list too op 😍

Reminds me of the song 'hey there delilah' which was one of my favorite songs as a teen and I still listen to it sometimes.

It's cute, sort of whimsical but still grounded and not try hard and also good for all ages 👌

HotchPotched · 23/11/2022 22:33

I love it, beautiful and unusual, good combination. Don’t listen to the ‘Olivia, Amelia or Ava?’ Brigade.

Jamesandthegiantpeach74 · 23/11/2022 22:33

I dont like the NN Deli or Dela though, DD prefers LiLee (not even sure how its spelt but no one else uses it, Lie-Lee) Its always stuck for us.

My 16 yr old Georgina has always been Genie (again not sure how, but my Nan was Jeannie and I like to think her NN is from my nan

Jamesandthegiantpeach74 · 23/11/2022 22:28

Im not biblical so no issue for me!

RambamThankyouMam · 23/11/2022 22:04

Very try-hard.

Also, not a great biblical character.

Luellie · 23/11/2022 21:53

Beautiful name, I wouldn't be at all put off by the song. The only thing that makes me think twice is just that the Biblical association is not a positive one. That's the main reason I couldn't bring myself to put Salome on our list, too.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 23/11/2022 21:41

Don't forget the Queen song... actually I really like it. I don't know any which is a good thing too I think, as in it's not too popular.

NCFT0922 · 23/11/2022 21:39

I know 2 Delilah’s; one is 9 and my niece and one is 5 and our friends DD. I don’t think it’s an issue. Gorgeous name!

Jamesandthegiantpeach74 · 23/11/2022 21:37

I have an 8yr old Delilah, I absolutely love her name and get so many compliments. There are no other Delilah's we know. If someone makes a comment like why why why we both just have a little chuckle and dont take it to heart, what gives people the right to comment on your child's name!?
When she was a toddler we NN her DeeDee but now she wants to be called Delilah. x

MontyK · 23/11/2022 18:35

It just sounds really harsh to me. Not a nice sounding name. Sorry!

Choconut · 23/11/2022 18:27

It always makes me think 'stripper name' for some reason - even before why, why, why.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/11/2022 18:16

Chuckiegg · 23/11/2022 14:38

It's a lovely name - a Delilah I know of has become 'Deli' as a nickname.

I’m not sure being nn’d after a place that sells salami is a vote of confidence

I would think of the song OP, but it’s getting very popular so 🤷‍♀️

PinkButtercups · 23/11/2022 15:47

I love Delilah and it has always been on my list. DP hates it though.

RandomMusings7 · 23/11/2022 15:44

Or Dahlia instead?
