Anneliese or Amelia?

I'm very stuck between these two for a newborn due in January.

Neither have sentimental value, so I'm completely open to opinions or other options. Throw a spanner in the works!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Both are lovely, but there are a lot of Amelia's (be use it's so lovely).

Anastasia?

Arabella?

Liliana?

LavenderAndBluebells · 23/11/2022 19:18

Annaliese! Amelia is very meh

TheTeddyBears · 23/11/2022 19:14

I'm biased as I have an Emilia so I would say Amelia, I don't like your other choice.

I always hear on here about how popular Amelia is. However where we are it isn't common, my daughter didn't have any in her class at nursery and nor any in her class at school. I actually don't know of any others at all.

Annaliese or Annalisa :) way to may Amelias around imo

Arcticlife · 23/11/2022 18:58

Anneli is a Norwegian variation (pronounced Anna-Lee)

KylieCharlene · 23/11/2022 18:38

Anneliese

Tripsabroad · 23/11/2022 18:34

Anneliese by far. I love it. Amelia doesn't sound nice to me.

Pemba · 23/11/2022 18:23

More like Anna-leez in my experience. (For British Annelieses). What's wrong with that?

In English an 'e' on the end of a name would be silent, not sounded out as it is in German and Dutch. For example Anne Frank is pronounced in English as 'Ann' one syllable, more like the French Anne. But I think she would have said it herself 'Ann-uh' so more like Anna to the ears of English speakers? Not sure though.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/11/2022 18:14

Annalise

Way too many Amelias (and all the similar names), and Annalise is sparky

Gummibär · 23/11/2022 16:15

Any UK Annelieses I've met have pronounced their name as anna-leece.

In that case, I'd go for Amelia!

hairyunicorn · 23/11/2022 15:55

i prefer Amelia

Classica · 23/11/2022 15:54

Gummibär · 23/11/2022 15:42

I love Anneliese, the German spelling but also the four-syllable German pronunciation.

How else would you pronounce it? Confused

Ann eh lee se

Strokethefurrywall · 23/11/2022 15:48

Annalise!

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 15:43

Anna-Lees.

I love Anneliese, the German spelling but also the four-syllable German pronunciation. Here everyone will shorten it to three (which is probably what you want, OP?) so I'm less keen. Still prefer it to Amelia though.

KnittedCardi · 23/11/2022 15:13

So, I have one of those names..... the German would be the Anneliese, the Italian Annalisa. Any other spelling is just asking for trouble. It's bad enough with either of the actual spellings. I find English people always want to hyphenate, or put a z instead of an s. Weird. Despite always having to tell people how to spell it, everyone I meet always mentions how they love the name, which is nice 😁

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/11/2022 14:53

And now I've misspelt it. Doh.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/11/2022 14:47

I much prefer Annaliese although would fully except that it would be often misspelt.

I don't like the mealy bit of Amelia. And the medical condition of the same name puts me off a bit. Though that might be niche.

AnnaMagnani · 23/11/2022 14:04

The spelling of Anneliese is correct for German.

However as you can see from this thread, even when people can copy it, it is forever spelt wrong. And don't get me on to pronouncing it.

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 13:59

Isn't it Liesl?

username8888 · 23/11/2022 13:59

Spelling is correct for German and as it's a German name I believe

username8888 · 23/11/2022 13:58

Annaliese. I also love Liesel. Also German ..

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 13:55

I'd use the Annalise spelling.
I don't like Amelia but it's very popular.
Annalise will probably be shortened, so I'd just name her Annie or Anna, which I prefer to your suggestions.
