Anneliese or Amelia?

I'm very stuck between these two for a newborn due in January.

Neither have sentimental value, so I'm completely open to opinions or other options. Throw a spanner in the works!

they are both very pretty names, however i do think amelia is overused at the moment--i know so many baby girl amelias.
i would choose anneliese for this reason. i am from the states and the way that i would think to pronounce it just from looking at it is ahn-uh-leece

Indigoo03 · 25/11/2022 19:03

Annalise sounds like aniseed also folk (probably immature boys) can easily pick out a rude word in her name..

countrypunk · 25/11/2022 18:59

I don't like either name OP. Is it A names you like for girls?

Definitely Anneliese (or possibly slightly simplified to Annelise) for me. Amelia is not horrible by any means, but Anneliese feels a bit fresher and more interesting somehow.

Spookypig · 25/11/2022 17:05

You can’t even compare Anneliese and Amelia.

Anneliese is strong, classy and beautiful and Amelia is done to death and on top of that is a medical term for someone without limbs.

KirstenBlest · 25/11/2022 16:50

@username8888 , I only know the name from the film, so it looked wrong, sort of like Diesel. If you are german and know several Liesels then you are likely to be right. The name might be spelt differently in different countries or something. I think it's a nice name.

VenusClapTrap · 25/11/2022 16:41

Anneliese is beautiful. It was on our list, but with a long foreign surname I felt it was kindest to pick something short and straightforward.

Love Liesel too. I used to know a Lieselotte, which I thought was gorgeous.

@username8888 , Liesl in The Sound of Music wasn't Liesel

I didn't say Liesl wasn't a legitimate spelling. I just 'suggested' Liesel as a name and was told it was Liesl. I would say Liesel as a spelling as it's simpler to spell. It can obviously be spelled both ways.

JoGray55 · 24/11/2022 21:15

I have an adult relation called Annalise. Strictly pronounced with 4 syllables (An-nuh-leace-suh in Scandinavia) but you can always say Ann-leese which is also lovely. She often calls herself Annie now as friends (in England) tended to call her that when she was younger. I think Annalise is a name that is great for a child but also suits an adult and is feminine and interesting.

denpark · 24/11/2022 21:01

There's far far too many Amelia's around (I'm a teacher). I'd go for something else.

LauderSyme · 24/11/2022 20:59

Oh dear, I seem to have unwittingly - and literally - made the exact point there. The only Annaliese I know says it with 3 syllables.

Thank you for letting me know!

username8888 · 24/11/2022 20:45

No it's Liesel. In German you say every letter, no silent ones and 'ie' is pronounced ee, and 'ei' is pronounced I. So Lee sel 😀

Liesl and Liesel both exist.

Gummibär · 24/11/2022 20:57

No it's Liesel.

In Bavaria it's shortened to Liesl

KirstenBlest · 24/11/2022 20:55

@username8888 , Liesl in The Sound of Music wasn't Liesel

AnnaMagnani · 24/11/2022 20:53

4 syllables not 3!

KirstenBlest · 23/11/2022 13:59

Isn't it Liesl?

MojoJojo71 · 24/11/2022 20:35

Annaliese by a mile, it is beautiful and underused

bewarethetides · 24/11/2022 20:05

Anneliese

Gummibär · 24/11/2022 20:04

Yes, it probably is - that's why it will be much easier to spell and pronounce for English speakers (than Anneliese).

You're right about Aurelia's double pronunciation...!

Penguinsaregreat · 24/11/2022 20:03

I know one and her mum says Anna Leece.
i think it’s spelt Annalise.

KirstenBlest · 24/11/2022 19:57

@Gummibär , isn't Amelia an english name? Aurelia can be said as Or-eel-ya or Or-ail-ya, Ow-rail-ya etc so I don't think it works that well.

Gummibär · 24/11/2022 19:51

It's hardly a tricky three syllables.

Many people pronounce it with 4 syllables as that is the original pronunciation.

LauderSyme · 24/11/2022 19:49

Annaliese, definitely.

I'm sure other posters are quite right that it is frequently mispronounced but I really don't understand why. It's hardly a tricky three syllables.

If I had had a girl I would have called her Amalia, pronounced Amma Lee Ah, with the emphasis on Lee. It's how the Greeks pronounce the name and I always loved it when I lived there. Mind you I had some weird fangled notion of spelling it Ama Liyah, so it was probably for the best I had a boy!

Gummibär · 24/11/2022 19:35

I would hate to have a foreign name that was not only mispronounced but also often mis-spelled.

Amelia, Aurelia etc all work beautifully in English.

caitlinrose · 24/11/2022 19:28

I actually do have a tricky surname and my first name isn't easy either (it can be spelt Kaitlyn, Caitlyn, Caitlin, Kaitlin, Katelyn, Catelynn etc. - I think in fact it's one of the names with the most spelling variants) yet people remember it because they make an effort. Again, I'm sorry if people in your life don't make that effort but people who don't care will even get easier names wrong or confuse common names such as Eve and Eva.

It's just odd to me how people manage to remember chemical formulas for science class or French vocabulary but not how to spell Anneliese. It's clearly because they don't care and not because they actually can't. Otherwise these people wouldn't have been able to finish school.

I won't discuss this further because I've simply had very different experiences in my life but I do think that it's possible to remember a nine letter name. If people don't it's because they don't want to or don't care not because they can't.
