So, if you were going to call your baby John, would you call him Johnny, Johnnie, Jonny if he has a nickname?

Jack is a name in its own right these days, but it was originally and traditionally a diminutive of John.

RitaSueandBobtwo · 22/11/2022 20:11

John is John but sometimes Johnny in my book.

Ian is a Scottish version of John if you prefer that I like John its a strong, traditional, unpretentious name.

If you don’t like the name as it is, use something else. 🤷 Most children end up with the nickname used by their peer group not their parents so you might find that he doesn’t answer to the nn you choose.

Jean.

I'd probably go for Jonathan, and then call him Jon/Jonny/Johnnie/Jonty. I'm not sure that there are any NN for John, other than Jack - though John is a nice name in its own right, and deserves to make a comeback.

EconomyClassRockstar · 22/11/2022 19:58

I'd say John doesn't have a nickname but Jonathan does. I really wanted to call one of my sons Jonathan but having dated about 10 of them over the years, my husband said no! 😁

illiterato · 22/11/2022 19:55

Jonty, although I think that's technically short for Jonathan rather than a nn for John.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/11/2022 19:53

Johnny.

Jonny and Johnnie look too cutsie. Johnny Cash would have curled his lip at such babyish spellings.

My husband is John.
My mother in law sometimes calls him Jonathan.
He is not Jonathan. Birth certificate is John.
Weird in that half of the family 🤣

I don't think it needs a nickname but if I was going to, it would be Jack
