Thoughts on Joel?

I am pg with DC2, I really like Joel for a boy. I saw someone's name pop up on the TV and I thought it would make a good name since it's a solid name yet probably not that common - any thoughts? X

I like it, but only when it is pronounced Jo-ul (and the same for Noel too!) "Jole" sounds wrong to me, sort of how Dot Cotton would pronounce it (I am not a Londoner).

DotDotDotDotDot · 14/11/2022 08:52

I grew up with lots of boys named Joel in North London. It was very popular with boys born in the 80’s of Caribbean descent. All pronounced Joe-Elle. I actually didn’t know about the shorter Joel pronunciation (to rhyme with mole) until many years later as I was so used to hearing it the first way. Anyway I like it a lot op, simple underused name these days I would say, Good luck.

Love it - handsome name

Partyofthree · 13/11/2022 23:21

Love it, my DHs name 🥰 not heard anyone say it different. He gets Jolene sung to him by his mates sometimes 🤣 he told me when he was at school one kid use to call him Duel 🙈🙄

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 13/11/2022 23:16

Not keen much prefer Joseph.

Hahaha I must say I think maybe a small child might question how to say the name if they were reading it for the first time but I'm not sure anyone else would pronounce is Jo-ul 😂

I thought Jo-ul was the correct pronunciation ConfusedBlush

How do you pronounce it, OP?

Lmgify · 13/11/2022 23:08

I like it! Congratulations!

The only Joels I have ever met pronounced it Jo-ul. Scottish.

Yes, I think in my Scottish accent it does sound like Jo-ul. I like it. Also like Jonah.

WithASpider · 13/11/2022 20:39

I love it! DS is Joel so I'm biased but it's a name I hadn't thought of until DH suggested it when he was a week old.

He's 13 now and we've only met one other.

youcantry · 13/11/2022 20:17

Lovely name. My friend has one but he's 26 now

FairytaleofNewHampshire · 13/11/2022 20:16

It's a great name and suitable for any age.

Onedayatatime22 · 13/11/2022 20:12

I've known several Joel's over the years through work, all Jo/ul apart from one Jo/elle

Dontaskdontget · 13/11/2022 20:09

Love it! And haven’t ever met a Joel.

Kite22 · 13/11/2022 20:05

@Luredbyapomegranate there is only one person on the thread coming across as not the full ticket, and it isn't any of the people who might have accents in which 'Joel' sounds 'Joe-ul'

monsteramunch · 13/11/2022 20:03

@Luredbyapomegranate

And no people will not think any of the above (unless v v dim)

Do you think all accents other than your own are dim?

Because lots of people would pronounce it 'Joe-ul' in various parts of the UK for example.

I don't pronounce it that way but funnily enough I don't think people who speak differently to me are 'v v dim'.

Comefromaway · 13/11/2022 19:57

I know a few Joel’s. I like the name.

Yeah, we are really dim us northerners with our Lancashire accents....

TabithaTittlemouse · 13/11/2022 19:52

It’s really quite common here.

NameChange30 · 13/11/2022 19:47

Love it.
Also love Saul.

FayCarew · 13/11/2022 19:44

You obviously haven't RTFT, @Luredbyapomegranate

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/11/2022 19:42

FayCarew · 13/11/2022 10:41

I like it, but bear in mind that some people will say it as Jo-elle, some as Jole, and some as Joe-ul, and some people will think he's called Joe.

blitzen · 13/11/2022 18:08

I know a Joel who changed his name to Joe as he was fed up of correcting people

LittlePearl · 13/11/2022 17:49

Lovely name

nosexsos · 13/11/2022 17:44

Love it (but I'm a big Billy Joel fan so prob biased!)

SwedishEdith · 13/11/2022 17:42

I know 3 and I think everyone pronounces it as a blend of Jo-ul/Jole. Not even sure how it should be pronounced now reading this.
