Are Casper and Kit posh names?

I mentioned these two names in passing to a friend and she made a quick remark that they’re “awfully posh”. It took me by surprise as I didn’t think so! I thought of them as similar to George - classless/used by all.
We’re in South West London, if that makes any difference!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FayCarew · 11/11/2022 15:47

Me neither @Gummibär , and I think posters on MN have strange ideas about class.

RestingMurderousFace · 11/11/2022 15:45

I know a Kit, he’s exceptionally fit. Not particularly posh though.

Borracha · 11/11/2022 15:42

I have a Caspar. I don’t think I’m posh!

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 15:34

@FayCarew I honestly don't really understand the obsession with class on mumsnet...

Names like Sebastian, Magnus, Quentin, Hugo, Beatrice, Arabella, Tabitha, as well aa Caspar and Kit on here, are all examples of names described as 'posh' on here, yet in real life I know them all to be normal lovely people... maybe 'posh' means classy and beautiful to me Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 11/11/2022 15:14

I think Caspar and Kit are now quite mainstream. I also thought Caspar brought the Gold.

Horatio and Gulliver less mainstream.

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 15:09

Oh come on, Gummi, you know what I mean.

Out of interest, what are the supposedly 'posh' names you know?

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 14:49

And those names are lovely and suit them very well!

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 14:49

I don't know anyone who is in a 'pony' club or wears red trousers ..... but I know lots of people with supposedly 'posh' names Confused

FayCarew · 11/11/2022 14:16

@Gummibär , A name that makes you think pony club and jolly hockeysticks, or floppy hair and red trousers.

Gummibär · 11/11/2022 14:00

Could someone please explain what makes a name 'posh'? Confused

MrDuplicity · 11/11/2022 13:58

My rabbit is called Casper- he seems quite posh to me!

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/11/2022 00:18

No. Both v popular

a generation ago maybe

Kit better As a nn I think

Gummibär · 10/11/2022 18:57

Why would Dermot make a name 'posh' Confused Or are you sarcastic Confused?

EachandEveryone · 10/11/2022 18:55

I think Dermot O’Leary has a Kasper so abit posh

Gummibär · 10/11/2022 18:52

Why would you worry about a name being 'posh' if you love the name?

What on earth is bad about it?

ImNotOnTwitterButMySupportGoldfinchTweets · 10/11/2022 15:13

I don’t really think it’s fair to say Caspar (any spelling) isn’t a real name, he’s one of the We Three Kings (of Orient are). He brought the frankincense.

Gaspar or Gaspard, is the French version. Just to add an option.

But if I was choosing, it’d be Christopher, nn Kit.

PicaNewName · 10/11/2022 13:14

Well, Casper is a ghost, Kit... isn't that the car from the Knight Rider?
None of those are 'real' names for me, but being a lower class forinner, it probably doesn't matter.

SatinHeart · 10/11/2022 13:05

YerAWizardHarry · 10/11/2022 02:00

The Caspers I know are generally of Eastern European heritage (although usually spelt differently)

Agree with this, with Caspar/Casper it depends a bit on nationality/ethnicity.

Kit is posh though.

Whatthejackdawsaw · 10/11/2022 13:00

I know one of each and not a posh family in either case

thegruffalosbum · 10/11/2022 12:52

Well I've lived in a SW London post code my whole life. Firstly, PP are correct that it means South West, despite being north of the river. But SW and South are two very different beasts in London terms, OP does NOT live in South London if she's in SW3. Anyone who has lived there any reasonable length of time would know that.
But also worth pointing out that there are some pretty underprivileged communities and councils estates in SW3 so to the PP assuming OP is 'posh', not necessarily so. I mean she probably is if she's looking at those names but just saying ...

geraniumsandsunshine · 10/11/2022 12:46

thegruffalosbum · 10/11/2022 07:28

SW3 isn't South London??

I think it is but it isn't south of the river if that's what you mean

bogo · 10/11/2022 10:59

I've never met an English Casper. I know one Kasper/Kacper (unsure of spelling) through work, who is from Eastern Europe. I have no idea about his "class" because it's not a topic of conversation.

Kit reminds of the Game of Thrones actor and Wayne Rooney's son. Maybe it was considered a posh name in the past but not anymore.

ButterflyBiscuit · 10/11/2022 10:30

I would worry they'd "date" to being 2020s. (And personally caspar's a ghost to me!)

LisaJool · 10/11/2022 10:25

Kit to me is definitely more smart, I don't know any.

LisaJool · 10/11/2022 10:24

I think Caspar used to be quite upper crust, but not any more. Came on to say the Radfords have a Caspar, alongside a Millie, Tillie, Ellie and Hallie. Enough said.
