We really like the name but have seen it spelt Ciara, Kiara, Kiera, Keira and Kira, which spelling do you prefer or which is most common? Thank you

Ciara all the way. But yes if you live outside of Ireland you have to get used to being called kee-ara and having it routinely misspelt.

FayCarew · 09/11/2022 10:27

@sopeas , Ciara is an irish name and it's pronounced keera.

sopeas · 09/11/2022 10:17

Maybe it’s just me but I would pronounce Ciara as key ar a not as keera like I would Kiera 🤷🏼‍♀️ two different names to me!

supercalifragilistic123 · 09/11/2022 09:36

We loved the name but the spelling issue ultimately meant we didn't use it.
It is a beautiful name though.
Kira is obviously the easiest to spell, I think it has Russian roots too.

Ciara if you're Irish, Keira if you're not.

Only exception is Kira if you're Japanese.

Agree

Ewisa · 09/11/2022 09:26

I would prefer Ciara

Ciara if you're Irish, Keira if you're not.

Only exception is Kira if you're Japanese.

This!

I love the Star Wars Solo movie spelling Qi'ra. Don't think I would have the confidence to use it but I like that spelling.

babyjellyfish · 09/11/2022 09:12

Ciara or Keira.

FayCarew · 09/11/2022 09:07

Chiara is Kee-ah-ra, Ciara is Kee-ra. @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

Ciara is nice but it does look like Clara written down, and you will get people saying it as See-ara, and telling people once is still a PITA as you end up telling a lot of peopl, and some people won't get it.
Not keen on Keira.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/11/2022 07:07

Are you Irish? Because if youjust want the sound, there is also the very similar, Italian, Chiara.

hopsalong · 09/11/2022 06:55

The spelling problem puts me off the name. Agree Ciara is correct. But my friend with that spelling finds a) that people constantly misspell her name when she says it aloud, b) that I'm written documents there is often confusion with 'Clara'. Also depends a bit how you feel about Keir Starmer, perhaps...

Mumdiva99 · 09/11/2022 06:34

I know a Ķera....just to add another version of the spelling.

I can't imagine that getting reliably spelt correctly outside of Latvia.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/11/2022 06:39

Ciara or Keira.

Juleslovesmaths · 09/11/2022 06:36

Ciara is the original Irish spelling and very beautiful - I called my daughter that 🙂

Mumdiva99 · 09/11/2022 06:34

I know a Ķera....just to add another version of the spelling.

Holly60 · 09/11/2022 06:33

It's ciara and most people will either know or need telling just once.

Or Keira is also nice to be fair.

TaraMock · 09/11/2022 06:30

I'd always spell it Ciara, but I'm Irish.

CherryLongIsland · 09/11/2022 06:28

I didn't realise Ciara and Keira were the same name.
I know one of each and Ciara pronounces it Key ah rah and Keira pronounces it Keir a

romdowa · 09/11/2022 06:14

If you want it to be pronounced cee-ra , then spell it the proper way which is ciara. No point in using a name from another language and not spelling it correctly

CursedKirst · 09/11/2022 05:48

The Keira knightly story is actually incorrect.

Her dad was supposed to spell her name Kiera, after a figure skater. He accidentally spelled it Keira. Which is another legitimate spelling of the name, just not the spelling she was supposed to have. The spelling, Keira, was and is a more common spelling than Kiera. It’s the male equivalent of the Scottish name Keir.

If you live in Ireland, I’d say go for Ciara. Otherwise, Keira. My friend lives in England and her name is spelled Ciara. It is mispronounced by someone almost daily which her child finds really frustrating.

swimchick1980 · 09/11/2022 05:30

Definitely not Keira! The reason for so many Keira spellings is that Keira Knightley's Mum make a spelling mistake - www.google.com/amp/s/www.her.ie/amp/celeb/thats-me-a-spelling-error-keira-knightley-reveals-her-name-is-actually-spelt-wrong-215395!

EdgeOfACoin · 09/11/2022 05:23

Ciara is the traditional Irish spelling, and the one I like best.

Keira is also an accepted anglicised version.

Not sure about the others.
