We really like the name but have seen it spelt Ciara, Kiara, Kiera, Keira and Kira, which spelling do you prefer or which is most common? Thank you

At work I once took a call from a girl, she said her name and I had already typed it in as "Sierra" before actually confirming the spelling - then found she actually spelled it Ciara! It was wrong.

I like Ciara - but it will be pronounced wrong a lot.
Kira, Kiera and Keira will all be pronounced right- I think Keira looks best.

All of them will be spelled wrong and she will have to spell it to people all her life- but then again I know a lot of Amy/Aimee/Amies and they don't seem that bothered about that!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 10/11/2022 03:16

Definitely with a C . Beautiful name .

PinkPupZ · 10/11/2022 01:39

Kiera

AmandaMirandaPanda · 10/11/2022 00:16

Ciara is the original Irish name. Kiera as far as I know is an anglicisation of Ciara.

Kiara can be an anglicisation of Ciara or of the Italian name Chiara.

Keira can be an anglicisation of Ciara or a feminisation of the Scottish boys' name Keir.

Kira is the usual transliteration of the (unrelated) Russian girls' name кира.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/11/2022 21:28

Ciara - the original and prettiest, and people much better at Irish pronunciation these days

Kiera - Anglicised second choice, more popular in the Uk, you will get fewer mispronunciations

Kira - phonetic, but looses a lot of charm

Keira - a misspelling, popularised by Keira Knightly whose Dad got it wrong when he registered her

Kiara - this is odd and unusual, definite no

caitlinrose · 09/11/2022 13:24

My husband loves Kiera and I like it too even though it's not my favourite name.

Kiera was the standard anglicisation, or at least that's what I was told (of Ciara).

It then changed to Keira because people used it more and more because of the actress.

I personally find Kiera more classy than Keira which to me is too strongly associated with a famous person and very early 2000s.

Kiera - this is my favourite (see above)
Ciara - this is nice but Kiera will not be mispronounced as often
Keira - it feels 2000s dated (they all do a tiny bit but this one more so) and very associated with the actress so if she does something unpleasant that will also be associated with the name (not that I think she will, she seems nice).
Kira - this has a different meaning and history so check which one you like better. It looks fine.
Kiara - don't use this as it will be pr. kee-ah-ra. Different name.

My daughter is Keira. I liked the Irish spelling however I didn't want people asking how to pronounce it throughout her life as we're in Scotland

Lyricallie · 09/11/2022 13:08

Ciara, looks prettier too I think. However I'm west of Scotland so we have a lot of Irish names so hopefully most would know how to pronounce it.

There's a singer called Ciara, I think she might be American. Her name is pronounced See-air-ah!!

Just to add more confusion into the mix!!

I would go with Ciara if in Ireland or of Irish heritage. Otherwise Keira or Kira.

Seen her before....the name just doesn't make those sounds. The woman literally can't pronounce her own name.

Fattoushi · 09/11/2022 13:06

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/11/2022 07:07

Are you Irish? Because if youjust want the sound, there is also the very similar, Italian, Chiara.

If you just want the sound, here's a different name that makes a completely different sound!

Ciara is Keer-ah
Chiara is Key-ar-ah

CherryLongIsland · 09/11/2022 06:28

I didn't realise Ciara and Keira were the same name.
I know one of each and Ciara pronounces it Key ah rah and Keira pronounces it Keir a

The Ciara I know pronounces it Keir-a and gets frustrated with people pronouncing it Key-ah-rah or even Che-ah-rah!

PipsBaby · 09/11/2022 13:03

roarfeckingroarr · 09/11/2022 12:15

I would pronounce Ciara as Kee-Are-Ah but Keira as Keir-ah - so different names

OP, if you live outside of Ireland, this is the assumption most people will make.

Even on this thread many have said the name Ciara is Irish and therefore pronounced Keer-ah, yet still you're seeing many people say it's Kee-are-ah (which is incorrect), so this thread is a good view of how likely you are to come across people who mispronounce it. Up to you whether it would annoy you! Personally, just correct people the once, the onus is then on them to remember and say it correctly.

Ciara is pronounced Kee-ra. Other pronunciations of this spelling are wrong.

onmytenthcoffee · 09/11/2022 12:57

I think you should spell it Kia-Ora

Kanaloa · 09/11/2022 12:55

If you live outside Ireland I would choose Keira. Everyone will know how to pronounce it etc, and you can easily say ‘k-e-i, like Keira Knightley.’ Ciara is likely to get Ki-ah-ra quite a lot.

Has she got a sister called Korteena?

Smartiepants79 · 09/11/2022 12:51

Ciara= ci-ar-ah
keira = Keer-ah

which one did you want.

Confusion101 · 09/11/2022 12:47

Ciara, Kiara, Kiera, Keira and Kira,

Ciara is my favourite. Kiera would be my second fave, although it looks like Kieran forgot the N. Don't like the others

I would pronounce the others
Kiara: kee - aarr - ah
Keira: kye - rah
Kira: ker - ah

Krakinou · 09/11/2022 12:16

There’s a girl in my team at work called Ciara. My instinct was to pronounce it Kee-ra, but my manager introduced her as See-ah-ra. No idea if that’s correct or if she just feels too awkward to correct him. So based on that I would go with the Keira spelling unless you’re in Ireland.

roarfeckingroarr · 09/11/2022 12:15

Ciara is the only actual traditional spelling here. All the others are made up names.

But ALL names are made up 🤨

I have only ever met Irish Ciara’s. I’ve also seen it spelt Kirra 😂 I like Kira.

RuthW · 09/11/2022 12:03

Keira. The only one that there is no problems with how to say it.
