Hi all.

Please help....due first baby April 23 and would like to start thinking about names.

I don't know the sex yet.

My problem is the names I really like I can't really use for various reasons. Hoping by looking at the name list, people can suggest some similar.

The last name will be Fisher.

Girls

  1. Isla Fisher - love this name but she is a known actress
  2. Olivia Fisher - Can't use as a close member of family
  3. Francesca Fisher - Same as above
  4. Sofia Fisher - Feel this might be too over used
  5. Emmie Fisher - Too similar to my name (Emma)

Boys

  1. Alfie Fisher - Family Dog name
  2. Albie Fisher - Another baby in the family
  3. Bobby Fisher - Another Family dog name 🙃

I seem to like a's and e's sounding names from the above

Thanks x

I’d recommend staying away from the top 100 names (even 200), as you can hear them all around. If you have kids in school you know. There is even 2 of each, in my DD’s there are 2 Eva’s and 2 Chloe’s for ex. Called little Eva and big Eva until teachers told them to use their full names instead, like Eva Johnson (made up) instead of Eva J, a mouthful.

some if not most of the names on your list are overused.

better to have a name that you don’t fancy as much as the uk top 1 (Olivia I think), then be one of the 2 or 3 Olivia’s in a class. It will grow with your child.

I have a popular name (for my time) and it hasn’t been a class or group where there wasn’t another girl with my name… I’d rather had an obscure name. Never mind my parents also have a me another popular name as middle name…

Our surname is very similar to yours (it means 'fish' in old English and some Scandi languages). We've had to choose names with hard consonants to mitigate the soft F and S sounds.

Our son is Gilbert but we also had on our list:

Edmond
Harold
Jory
Jago
Malcolm

Marion
Mariella
Hero
Eleni
Eleri
Cordelia
Claudia
Juno

Some people will say I lay and others Islay Islay should have read Iz-lay

KirstenBlest · 08/11/2022 07:23

Could you use Islay Fisherinstead?
As far as I know it's pronounced the same as Isla but it looks different at least and is a legit spelling.

@caitlinrose , it might look different, but it sounds the same and nearly everyone would spell it wrongly. Some people will say I lay and others Islay, so not a good idea.

@Thisisnotmyname2 , Sophie Fisher doesn't sound great, but Phoebe Fisher sounds ok

Theoldwoman · 08/11/2022 03:27

Yeah, I wouldn’t use anything ending in an A sound or E for that matter.

Suggestions:

Kate Fisher
Isobel Fisher
Lillian Fisher
Clare Fisher
Beth Fisher

Rex Fisher
Jeremy Fisher
Thomas Fisher
William Fisher
Callum Fisher

Eliza Fisher sounds nice.

Dreamingcats · 07/11/2022 23:13

How about Aila? Looks different but sounds like Eye-la?

Dreamingcats · 07/11/2022 23:08

I know it looks the same written down, but I thought the actress pronounced it Iz-la rather than Isle-a? I think it's totally useable.

Thisisnotmyname2 · 07/11/2022 22:28

Sophie instead of Sofia?

Fiona Fisher

Ashley or Archie?

They aren’t taken, as such, but you are choosing very popular, very high up the charts, very 2022 names, in the most part. If you’re happy for your Dc to have a popular name, that’s cool, just use one you love. Because with names that high up the lists, they’ll most likely know several others by school age anyway.

If you wanted to choose something that’s currently less popular, say outside the top 500 or 1,000, you’d have more freedom to chose something not already ‘taken’.

Eg Isla (3rd most popular in England and Wales in 2021 with more than 2,500 little Islas born) could become Alisa (only 69 born) or Althea, well outside the top 1,000.

Olivia is lovely, and very popular, first place in 2021 with more than 3,500 born. Others with similar sounds are Ophelia, outside the top 100, Evelina, outside the top 500, Olympia, outside the top 1,000.

Same for boys, Archie, Albie, Albert, Arthur, type of names are all very high up.
Ashley, Aubrey, Arnold, not so high (top 500-700)
Edmund/Eddy, Matthias/Matty, Indiana/Indie, also far less popular.

TalkisChips · 07/11/2022 21:29

Agree that Isla and Olivia are sooooo popular that she’ll be Isla F or Olivia F. Especially if you use the filler middle name of Rose/Grace/May.

FrogletandMe · 07/11/2022 21:26

Isla is so popular she'd probably be known as Isla F. once she started school.

Coral Fisher
Laura Fisher
Laurel Fisher

Gulliver Fisher
Vincent Fisher
Joel Fisher

caitlinrose · 07/11/2022 20:52

Could you use

Islay Fisher

instead?

As far as I know it's pronounced the same as Isla but it looks different at least and is a legit spelling.

I also don't think Isla Fisher is THAT famous.

Otherwise:

Lyra Fisher
Lila Fisher
Ayla Fisher
Ada Fisher
Eileen Fisher
Aileen Fisher
Alva Fisher
Maya Fisher

Oliver Fisher
Edward Fisher (called Teddy)
Ronald Fisher (called Ronnie)
Alfred Fisher
