Matilda, Adaline or Sabrina?

Ciaonow · 05/11/2022 17:19

Any thoughts on these names?

Also opinions on best spelling for Adaline/Adeline/Adeleine? I like the look of the A spelling written down but generally prefer traditional spellings and don’t want it to potentially look made up.

Surname is two syllables starts with an R.

Middle name suggestions also welcome!

I like all 3 but Matilda is my favourite.

Also, I like the spelling Adeline.

GlassDeli · 10/11/2022 13:09

I like Sabrina best.

watermelonwizard · 10/11/2022 12:11

Matilda is beautiful

allypike · 08/11/2022 19:11

I think Adaline is the prettiest name (I'm biased because I have an Adelina on the way 😊). That being said, I much prefer the Adeline spelling over Adaline but that's just me!

Matilda is lovely.

Adaline sounds like a medication for ADHD.

Sabrina is a stripper.

I was going to say that Adeline sounds like a cleaning product!

I like Sabrina but not Matilda.

mrsm43s · 08/11/2022 15:47

Matilda has been done to death, and is a little dull.

I like both Adeline and Sabrina. For me Sabrina probably has the edge - I like the witchy connotations, plus it's really very underused for a familiar name.

Fundays12 · 08/11/2022 15:38

I like Adeline and Sabrina is quite nice. Matilda isn’t a name I like at all sorry.

SaorsaSolasta · 08/11/2022 15:30

Adeline and Sabrina are great, Matilda seems very popular at the moment which puts me off

Ciaonow · 08/11/2022 15:14

Thanks all! Quite a mixed response…lots to consider!

Adeline is gorgeous

soulinablackberrypie · 08/11/2022 11:48

Don't like Sabrina at all, sorry, but there's nothing specifically wrong with it, I just don't love the sounds in it.

I like both Matilda and Adeline (prefer that spelling), but maybe Adeline feels a bit fresher right now as there are quite a lot of little Matildas and Tillys.

marshallzumarubble · 08/11/2022 08:25

I have a 10 year old Adeline and we generally get positive comments. We pronounce it Add-a-line and this is what most people assume, we've had the occasional Add-a-lin but never leen. We went for the traditional spelling and again, most people spell it that way when they hear it. She is often Addie, sometimes Liney, and has decided she will be Della when she 'is a grown up'.

In terms of popularity, from your list Matilda is by far the most popular at number 28 in the 2021 stats. It has been in the top 100 for the last 17 years so you are likely to hear of a lot more Matildas than Sabrinas or Adelines. It is a lovely name though with a lot of nickname options.

Adeline is currently 355 in the charts but it has risen 200 places in the last 6 years so may have a bit of a moment in the next few years, especially given the popularity of Ada as well.

Sabrina is at 478 and has been there or thereabouts pretty much steadily for the last 20 years or so, having been in the top 200 around 1996.

Irridescantshimmmer · 06/11/2022 17:49

Adaline 👍

Gummibär · 06/11/2022 17:43

Of those three I prefer Sabrina

caitlinrose · 06/11/2022 13:43

Sabrina is on our list, so I'd pick Sabrina!

Matilda is nice but a bit overused.

I would avoid Adeline (this is the correct spelling as far as I know) because there are lots of girls called Maddie, Madeline, Madeleine, Ada etc.

Definitely spell it Adeline.

Dreamingcats · 06/11/2022 13:30

I prefer Sabrina.

I pronounce Adeleine and Adelne like Madeleine without the M (ending in "Lin"). I would be more likely to assume Adaline was Add-a-line to rhyme with Mine. Or even Aid-a-line. I f that matters.

Theconceptoftime · 06/11/2022 13:17

Adeline - beautiful name, I only know of one and she is lovely.

Matilda - love this and it's popularity seems to have subsided which is nice.

Sabrina - not a fan really. Prefer Serena but even then I prefer the first two names.

whatchamecalled · 06/11/2022 13:10

I have a Matilda who is 6 now. It suits her so much and she loves it! We love all the short versions. My sis calls her Matty but she also gets Tilds, Tilda and as she gets older, she could choose Tilly too.

Surprised to read comments about it being common and overdone. There are only two Matilda's in the whole school, my daughter and another in Reception. We loved it because it was a bit different but still traditional.

I also like Adeline, but can see difficulties with spelling and pronunciation.

AutumnCaramelApples · 06/11/2022 12:34

Adaline / Adeline

Rustyheart · 06/11/2022 12:33

Adeline is beautiful. Addy in Paper Moon.

WeWantBoo · 06/11/2022 12:31

With Adeline I never know whether it’s Ad-a-leen or Ad-a-line

Sabrina I think sounds a bit tarty. A bit page 3.

So Matilda gets my vote.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/11/2022 12:30

Matilda is nice.

I've only met one Sabrina and she is the single most self obsessed head so far up her own arse she can see daylight person I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

BonnieWeeJeannieMcColl · 06/11/2022 12:27

Matilda and Adeline are equally lovely, but spelling might be an issue with Adeline.

Not keen on Sabrina.

Ellmau · 06/11/2022 10:29

Adeline is the traditional spelling. Adelina would be nice too.

Sabrina is lovely.

I find Matilda a bit matronly.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 06/11/2022 05:11

Mathilda is a beautiful name .
Don’t really like Sabrina .
Adaline sounds awful .
