What do people think? I absolutely love it and it’s the only boys name I like really but my mum hates it and is trying to put me off!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I teach a Rupert and he's lovely. I think it's a gorgeous name, his mates call him Ru which is very cool

bigbluebus · 04/11/2022 13:39

Wouldn't be my choice, sorry. I'd put it in the same 'no' pile as Tarquin and Quentin.

My neighbour used to have a cat called Rupert and whenever he failed to return home I could hear her in the street shouting Rooooperrrrrrt. It still rings in my ears now.
Plus I used to get a Rupert the Bear annual for Christmas as a child so to my mind you might as well call your child Paddington!

xPeaceX · 04/11/2022 13:21

Funny, never thought of how close to Robert it is. Robert sounds healthy, grounded, sporty and clever. But Rupert sounds thin, self-conscious, goes everywhere in an Aston Martin, trading on dad's money.
YOUR MUM IS RIGHT 😅

channin · 04/11/2022 12:15

I love it! Cute on a little boy and suave on a man.

RobertsRadio · 04/11/2022 12:12

I immediately think of the brutish, glamorous, womanising, adulterous, aristocrat cad, Rupert Campbell-Black. Will you be taking your little Rupert to riding lessons and buying him a pony? If not it's a No from me.

BiscuitLover3678 · 04/11/2022 12:11

Apparently all the names I love are ‘wet’ but I find that attractive of men tbh. I hate blokey types.

BiscuitLover3678 · 04/11/2022 12:10

It’s so lovely. Don’t listen to your mum! Never tell anyone your preferred names.

I can’t believe people on here think Robert is better.

CrotchetyQuaver · 04/11/2022 12:03

I think that would be fine

ReadtheReviews · 04/11/2022 11:10

It's sweet, agree a bit painfully posh but still not horrible.
I think of Ruprecht in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

RandomMusings7 · 04/11/2022 10:59

IHateWasps · 04/11/2022 10:35

Robert feels completely different to Robert imo. Rupert is utterly wet. A Robert could be anyone. I picture Rupert and I can only see a foppish awkward Hugh Grant type in red trousers(or the bear.)

Absolutely agree.

Robert is classic and strong

Rupert is just so... unsexy.

BCxx · 04/11/2022 10:57

I think it’s cute 😊

Fluffydiamond · 04/11/2022 10:56

I think it's a bit twee.

kublacant · 04/11/2022 10:38

I always want to pronounce it Wupert . I like it written down but not said out loud. Which makes no sense really!

IHateWasps · 04/11/2022 10:35

Completely different to Rupert sorry.

LightHousePanda · 04/11/2022 10:33

I think it's sweet. I do think of the bear but that's not a bad association. If I were English I'd use it.

xPeaceX · 04/11/2022 10:30

AWFUL

Proamble · 04/11/2022 10:29

I think it’s sweet, nearly used it for our baby, good job we didn’t as there are 2 at nursery and it would have been confusing! I like the nicknames Rupes too. I know a few adult Ruperts, also has the same feel to Robert. It’s a popular classic name, not sure why your mother thinks it’s odd?!!

strawberrytilda · 04/11/2022 10:28

I like it. It's an inoffensive name, why doesn't your mum like it? I think you should go for it if it's your favourite, she'll learn to love it when she meets her grandson!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 04/11/2022 10:26

I like it, I only know one and he gets a lot of compliments. Imo it's a lovely name.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 04/11/2022 10:23

Did she say why she dislikes it, specifically? It's sometimes useful to get feedback, but just "oh, no!" or "yuck!" isn't very helpful.

Personally I don't like the sound; it feels harsh to me. But it's also pretty similar to Robert, which was very popular for a long time. If you love it I think it would be fine to use; plenty of people do.

secrete · 04/11/2022 10:22

I don't like it, though maybe it's a cultural thing (it's hardly ever used in my community and I don't think I've ever met one). It also reminds me of Rupert Murdoch, but he's old enough to be irrelevant to the next generation of kids.

I wouldn't talk about names with my mum because we have completely different tastes. Of course she's going to try to steer you towards a name she likes better, but it's not her decision to make.

ElviraDePonte · 04/11/2022 10:16

One of my worst names ever! I’d just hate to be a man called Rupert. It has this posh, twee, extremely wet feel to it and I imagine. posh, slightly useless man in red trousers.

Sorry. You did ask!

IHateWasps · 04/11/2022 10:13

It's awful. It's such a wet and unattractive name.

totallyaddictedtocheese · 04/11/2022 10:12

I love that name!
