What do people think? I absolutely love it and it’s the only boys name I like really but my mum hates it and is trying to put me off!

I'm not a fan I'm afraid. I'd expect him to wear coloured jeans, a barbour jacket and have at least 2 black labradors in the back of one's Range Rover.

Sounds lovely 🤷🏼‍♀️

eurochick · 08/11/2022 18:08

It's a no from me.

It's Army slang for an officer as it has such a reputation as a posh boy name.

Gummibär · 08/11/2022 15:13

Sorry - I don't know any young Robs.

Gummibär · 08/11/2022 15:12

*You'd call 'Rob' in the supermarket and 20 people would turn around! So boring and unimaginative.

Rupert is much nicer imo OP*

I don't any young Robs!

And I don't find Roop any nicer, personally. I much prefer Rob!

VenusClapTrap · 08/11/2022 14:40

There seems to be a rash of little Ruperts popping up at the moment. I can’t for the life of me see the appeal. It’s about as attractive as Colin and Malcolm but with a red trouser slant too.

Wouldn’t do for us all to like the same thing though!

ShakeYourFeathers · 08/11/2022 14:22

I know a couple of Rupert. I actually quite like it.

MidnightMeltdown · 08/11/2022 14:09

I can't believe that people on here prefer the name Robert!

Robert feels completely different to Robert imo. Rupert is utterly wet. A Robert could be anyone. I picture Rupert and I can only see a foppish awkward Hugh Grant type in red trousers(or the bear.)

Robert is as boring as hell. I think that Rupert is much nicer

CristinaNov182 · 08/11/2022 13:56

I know a 4 year old Rupert and he is a cute little bean.
I wouldn’t have thought R a nice name before meeting him, but it suits him well.

ancientgran · 07/11/2022 16:27

When I had one of my kids I was on the post natal ward when I saw someone I'd gone to antenatal classes with and admired her baby and asked his name. She said it was Rupert and everyone hates it. I said I always associate it with Prince Rupert of the Rhine who I've always thought of as quite a romantic figure in the civil war, a dashing cavalier. I still think that. I don't know why anyone would tell a new mum that her babies name was horrible.

I don't like it, though maybe it's a cultural thing (it's hardly ever used in my community and I don't think I've ever met one). It also reminds me of Rupert Murdoch, but he's old enough to be irrelevant to the next generation of kids.

I wouldn't talk about names with my mum because we have completely different tastes. Of course she's going to try to steer you towards a name she likes better, but it's not her decision to make.

'Rupert' Murdoch's first name is actually Keith...
Rupert is his middle name. I reckon he changed it to seem posher than he is.

Newuser82 · 07/11/2022 16:17

Love Rupert!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 07/11/2022 16:17

Love the name Rupert .

SemperIdem · 07/11/2022 16:03

It’s not a name I’d use personally, however it’s not dreadful. There are names I like significantly less that get used all the time.

I think you’re just going to have to ignore your mum. When I told mine what my daughters name was going to be, she described it as “blah”. I named my daughter it anyway and from the day she was born, my mum has denied ever saying such a thing “I always thought it was a simple and elegant name”. It’s been 7 and a half years of solid denial now 🤣

GlassDeli · 07/11/2022 08:09

I don't like the 'pert' sound in Rupert.

RambamThankyouMam · 07/11/2022 05:06

Dreadful. Like a Little Lord Fauntleroy in old-fashioned bloomers.

garlictwist · 07/11/2022 05:04

Not keen. It's too posh and wet. You'd be mocked for a name like that where I live.

ChillysWaterBottle · 07/11/2022 04:53

I think it's cute x

Blablablaaaaa · 07/11/2022 03:58

I’m ok with Rupert but adore Rufus

mycatisannoying · 07/11/2022 03:38

Rupert, Rupert the Bear, everyone knows his naaaaame.

No, no and no.

AverageJoan · 07/11/2022 03:35

Rupert would've been our DCs name had she been a boy! If you like it, OP, go for it. Other people's opinions don't really matter ☺️

MrsJephson · 07/11/2022 02:38

Love it. I also like red trousers and Labradors!

alexdgr8 · 06/11/2022 20:28

it's a good name.
and i rarely say that on MN.
rupert the bear.
prince rupert of bohemia.
all good associations.
it is a variant of robert.
which i also like.
what does your husband think;
that's far more important than your mother's prejudice.
you are the parents, not her; as long as it's not outlandish, which it's not, it's your choice.
good luck.

User6761 · 06/11/2022 20:20

Sorry OP but like previous posters I really don't like this name. Very posh, twee, wet...yep, it has those associations for me too. I do like a lot of R boys names - Robert, Robin, Reuben, Ruairidh, Rory, Rowan. BUT this is your child and you have to choose a name you love.

ProperVexed · 06/11/2022 19:15

Absolutely love it...but was vetoed by DH.
