Nickname dilemma

Hi,

DC 4 is a few weeks old and we’ve named him Rufus. Other three kids all have names with natural nicknames and we all love using nicknames in our family. The thing that has thrown me is I didn’t realise Rufy was a name for rohypnol ); and my dad as said he thinks Ru sounds weak (which had stuck in my head and slightly ruined that for me). I’m feeling hormonal and tired so this is feeling like more of a drama than I’m sure it will in a few months time!

so my question is what nickname would you give a Rufus, and do you think Rafi is too much of a stretch as Rafferty/Rafi was one of my fave names I didn’t choose in the end due to someone I know having a rafferty who is always know as his full name and never Rafi so it wouldn’t be a problem us using that nickname.

thanks in advance!

Roo is quite sweet, but only for a little one or at home.
I don't think he'll want Roo at school when he's 12

I know two adult Roo's. One is a naval officer, the other races classic cars. Neither seems to struggle with their name.

Reverse it and call him Fury!

Grrrhhh!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 03/11/2022 23:31

Ru sounds great & I love the name Rufus . Congratulations.

Spookypig · 03/11/2022 23:28

Love Ru!

Raddix · 03/11/2022 16:10

Ru / Roo is a baby name, not suitable for an adult. You still have time to switch. I’d change his name to Rafferty and call him Rafi.

Mimilamore · 03/11/2022 16:06

Ru is great, don't worry , dad's say daft things!

Kite22 · 03/11/2022 00:04

Nicknames evolve over time - they aren't things you plan.
He is more than likely to end up with a nickname that isn't anything to do with his name.
If you set out to call him 'Ru', then he will no doubt be called Kanga or similar by his mates.
Just call him Rufus if that is what you have decided to name him.

Fivebeanchilli · 03/11/2022 00:00

Ru / Roo is gorgeous. Ignore your dad.

Jalepenojello · 03/11/2022 00:00

I love Ru

GlassDeli · 02/11/2022 23:58

Rusty

AutumnScream · 02/11/2022 21:26

Rou reynalds is the name of a rock band singer so quite cool.

pixiebex86 · 02/11/2022 21:02

Roo is very cute and ages well. My son is rueben and we call him roo, he's 13 and still suits him

Imissmoominmama · 02/11/2022 21:01

I know an adult Roo. He’s quite gorgeous!

Bingobangodrinkacanoftango · 02/11/2022 21:00

I know a Ru and he is absolutely wonderful. I love the name and can’t understand what’s “weak” about it but appreciate some things stick in your head once said.

I think Rufus is very sweet and Ru, Ruf or even Rufi (I wouldn’t associate with the drug terminology in the context of it being a name - Molly is MDMA and Charlie is coke but i wouldn’t think of that if introduced to someone named those names)

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 02/11/2022 20:58

I knew an Andrew once whose nickname was Roo. It was really cute, cool & different. Really suited him!

Floralnomad · 02/11/2022 20:58

Roo is lovely and definitely not weak , have you not seen the Winnie the Pooh film where they are trying to catch the Backson , and Roo very ruthlessly says ‘send the pig’ .

Longdarkcloud · 02/11/2022 20:54

Partly right/ Partly wrong.
The name was Roux so sounds like Ru but spelt differently. I didn’t read the book, just saw the film.

Longdarkcloud · 02/11/2022 20:51

There is Rudy which is very similar to Rudy.
However I think Ru is really nice. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t that the gypsy pirate’s name in Chocolat? If I’m right that is a really strong name

validnumber · 02/11/2022 16:07

I think you are over thinking this.
My DS has many nicknames and one of them is a random Spanish name 😂

Changedname81 · 02/11/2022 15:56

“Red” as it means red headed 😃

Topseyt123 · 02/11/2022 15:13

I don't think Ru sounds weak, and Rufy sounds fine too. Don't overthink it. When your child goes to school and gradually grows up he may naturally take on a totally different nickname. I know my DDs have.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/11/2022 15:09

Roo is quite sweet, but only for a little one or at home.

I don't think he'll want Roo at school when he's 12 - but Rufus is a nice name

Threelittlemonkeyss · 02/11/2022 13:43

Ah thanks guys, that’s really made me feel better about Ru/Roo! I do really like it, I just find it hard not to let negative opinions get in sometimes!

I love Ru, reminds me of kanga and roo in winnie the pooh

CastleTower · 01/11/2022 15:50

Ru / Roo is nice, just use that.
