Hey,

We’re thinking of calling our girl River and our second name is Robertson. We love the name River but aren’t 100% sure yet about ‘River Robertson’.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks ,
Amy

No problems at all if she can pronounce the letter R

This would be the deal breaker

I think Rivers ok, but all the Sky/Winter/River/Summer names are getting overuse and naff

DeeDeeDaisy · 29/10/2022 15:25

A bit tongue twister-y to me. Difficult to say aloud

RambamThankyouMam · 29/10/2022 12:29

It's a bit porny.

SparkyBlue · 29/10/2022 10:47

Normally not a fan of names like River but I think it really goes together and I really like it.

FayCarew · 29/10/2022 10:30

I don't like the name River, and definitely not with the surname.
I'd expect her to be a boy.
Wivew Wobertsson or Vivev Vobertson.

It's a bit wet but as pp it flows.

bluebird3 · 29/10/2022 08:55

I don't think it works with your surname. Sorry

steppemum · 29/10/2022 08:53

I don;t really have an opinion on the name River, but I think River Robertson does not flow at all and is a real mouthful. It isn't the alliteration, it is the number of syllables or the sounds somehow.
For example, Rachel Robertson flows fine. Maybe it is because it ends in an R

Overthebow · 29/10/2022 08:49

That’s a bit of a tongue twister with all the rs

Wibbly1008 · 29/10/2022 08:41

Too many R’s

AdaColeman · 29/10/2022 08:40

Too many RRRRs for comfort, and what if she can't pronounce R?
Also River is more usually a male name.

But, apart from that, it's lovely.

Rowen32 · 29/10/2022 08:27

Riva makes me think of Viva Las Vegas!

Rowen32 · 29/10/2022 08:27

I would think boy especially with the surname... Think I would go with something more overtly feminine when Robert is in the surname..

MomentOfCalm · 29/10/2022 08:24

Riva is lovely!

Undertheoldlindentree · 29/10/2022 08:21

Riva?
Ria?

Teeshirt · 29/10/2022 07:15

I think it’s really hard to say alongside your surname. It feels like you have to contort yourself to get the syllables out correctly. So it’s no from me.

MomentOfCalm · 29/10/2022 06:48

@Razzle5 yes absolutely right. I was talking about after the pre / immediately post birth when the parents will get lots of comments from lots of people about the name. As soon as the child gets old enough to have an opinion on it certainly it's only them that matters!

HelpMeLoseIt · 29/10/2022 06:48

I love River. Know a couple of boys with it but think it's also lovely for girls

abitunsureaboutthis · 29/10/2022 06:48

I like the alliteration. I do think River sounds masculine though (River Phoenix, etc.), and would think the parents are hippies. Nothing wrong with being a hippy, obviously, but that would be my association with the name.

Teadrinkingmumofone · 29/10/2022 06:43

Not for a girl IMO

Razzle5 · 29/10/2022 06:43

MomentOfCalm · 29/10/2022 06:35

Yes I do know what you mean about how River works for a tiny baby - this is what I was thinking when I said it works in adulthood - perhaps it works in adulthood more - but still I like it for a baby.

It's always going to be a divisive name so it depends on parent's ability to not care what people think. I like these kind of names but am not brave enough to face people not liking my baby's name so went for two more traditional ones!

The parents ability not to care in the long run is irrelevant

surely it’s the person who is given the name that you have to think about

LovelyDaaling · 29/10/2022 06:40

That's a lot of Rs. What about Riva instead? It seems more like a girl's name than River.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/10/2022 06:39

I guess it flows Wink

Soproudoflionesses · 29/10/2022 06:31

I can't stand these nature names like River, Willow, Sky etc so it's a no from me. Just couldn't look at a tiny baby and think oh yes she looks like a River.

“Dated” names to me are lovely names that have stood the rest of time.
