He seems to like "dated" names

Expecting a girl in February and have been discussing names.

DH likes names such as Amy, Jenny and Holly. I don't mind Holly, but don't know if I would use it for a February baby (may be over thinking it though) I'm not a fan of Amy though. Nothing wrong with it, I just associate it with some mean girls from school. Plus, his Mum has a cat called Amy, so I feel like that would be weird 😂 Jenny I don't mind either but I not a huge fan if Jennifer.

Told my friends about his name suggestions and they said the names are "dated" which is making me more apprehensive in using them.

I've suggested names such as Rose and Amelia (thought we could compromise with the nickname Amy for that.) He didn't mind Rose, but wasn't keen on Amelia 🙄😂

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great?

(We also have a cat called Tilly if that's any help haha) 😁

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
soulinablackberrypie · 28/10/2022 20:57

I quite like Holly and I don't think it should be confined to any one time of year. Do people avoid Daisy when daisies aren't flowering? (Actually Daisy sounds like the sort of name you might be able to agree on!)

Otherwise how about Nancy, Poppy or Kerry?

FennelAndOnions · 28/10/2022 20:52

Amelia has been done to death, it’s so overused so will date. Especially if she’s Amelia Rose as Rose/May/Grace are the default middle names for girls right now.

I really like Holly, it’s not dated at all. There are 3 in one of my children’s year at school.

I don’t mind Jenny, it would be nice to hear that or Holly over Evie/Ava/Olivia/Amelia/Millie/Lily.

BreatheAndFocus · 28/10/2022 20:27

Eh? Holly trees are evergreen. They’re there all year round. I know people called Holly and I don’t for one minute think they were born in December. It’s just a tree/nature name. You don’t think people called Rose are only allowed to be born in Spring when roses flower, do you? 🤔 The name commemorates the attractive plant/tree.

How about these traditional names:

Katy/Katie
Sarah
Jemma
Lucy
Polly
Anna/Annie
Millie
Ellie
Naomi
Julia
Cassie

Your husband sounds like my husband!

One person here wrote that it's because men tend to want to name their kids after people they have met with the names in the past and liked. I guess that makes sense. I personally would rather give my child a name that doesn't feel connected to a person already.

My husband likes Holly too and he loves Emma, Chloe, Hayley, Kaylie and some others. I personally like classic names, old fashioned but uncommon names like Agatha and Cassandra as well as some nature names.

We have managed to find names we both like. Among them are names such as Isabella and Sabrina.

Holly - it's one I could agree on as I love Christmas. I think it can be used any time of year.

Amy - this was too common. There's common and then there's super common. Amys were everywhere.

Jenny - I prefer Jennifer. It feels dated, more so than Holly.

Suggestions:

Amelie
Esmée
Guinevere
Jenna
Jasmine
Rosalind
Amity
Amandine
Amara
Poppy
Hazel

NoWayRose · 28/10/2022 20:16

Jenny is so dated that you’ll be ahead of the curve by bringing it back early. Think there were only a couple born in the UK last year. It will probably be the Ivy/Florence/Edith of the 2030s.

Although I think it was the most popular girls name in the States for the entire 1970s, so not sure if it’s so common that it will take a few more years to come back

Echobelly · 28/10/2022 20:14

I think they're all nice names and it's good sometimes to have something 'unfashionable', especially if it's not a name that's actually unconventional. I think we could stand to see more baby girls called Louise, Caroline, Jennifer or Anna etc. We were going to use Jennifer if we'd had a second girl and I liked the fact that it was a perfectly 'normal' name but not popular.

Amy can be spelled differently

I came across Aimee, Emmy, Amee all sound very similar

MsTSwift · 28/10/2022 20:09

Louisa is gorgeous. I think his names sound sweet and refreshing in a sea of Eve/Grace/Isabel/Olivia/Lily/Amelia super dull names

Floomobal · 28/10/2022 20:07

In our swimming lesson of 8 babies, 4 are called Amelia, Emilia or Amelie. Zzzzzzzz

Workawayxx · 28/10/2022 20:05

I also had a partner with quite “dated” sounding name ideas. We settled on Louisa.

I think holly is lovely and perfectly ok for a feb baby and Jenny is very pretty and could be ahead of the trend curve! I also really like Laura, Anna, Emma, Sarah that are similar type of names.

losingit31 · 28/10/2022 19:54

Call her Holly if you want. My mum is called June and her birthday is in January Grin

Gigihulu · 28/10/2022 19:53

Haha my DH is the same, he wanted Jennifer, Natalie (which I like but was my bosses name) or Danielle. I blame the fact that he went to a boys school so didn't know many girls whilst he was teenager to know what was in vogue then.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 28/10/2022 19:49

I think they feel "dated" to a lot of people because even though they may have been in use for a long time and still are, may even be "classics", certain names spiked like crazy in the past and then declined. If a name's in the top ten for two decades, that's a lot of little Jennifers or Olivias or Claires!

It may be that he likes names that seem familiar/normal because they were around a lot in his childhood. I think you probably just need to keep on ploughing through to find common ground or at least get a better idea of his tastes.

He also seems to like names ending in the -ee sound. How about:

Audrey
Bonnie
Daphne
Heidi
Naomi
Phoebe
Romy
Rosalie
Sylvie
Zoe

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 19:49

I find Holly a bit twee, Amy a bit dull, but I like Jenny - maybe short for Genevieve rather than Jennifer?? Jennifer is a bit prissy I think.

Rose and Amelia are lovely but done to death.

Anyway you have to find something you both like - so download the baby names match app - you both make lists and it tells you when you get a match. Or alternatively just have two lists on the fridge and tick each other’s when you like something.

sopeas · 28/10/2022 19:48

How about Cassie?

Also I know Rose is really overdone as a middle name but Jenny Rose sounds adorable

Largethighsbadeyes · 28/10/2022 19:47

I think Amy and Jenny are both my generation names.

In my school there were also lots of these...

Olivia
Sarah
Rachel
Louise
Clare/Claire
Joanne
Laura
Sally

inappropriateraspberry · 28/10/2022 19:45

I know a Holly born in March! I imagine she will be explaining to others when she was born her whole life!

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/10/2022 19:43

Jenny is gorgeous - I know of 2 baby Jennies in the last year. I've taught a handful over the last 20 years. I think it's timeless.
Amelia and Rose are both pretty popular, more so than Jenny.

Jenna
Genevieve

Lindy2 · 28/10/2022 19:39

Amelie is another alternative for Amy.

I personally love Holly (I have one 😁). If your baby is due in February, Holly is a perfectly suitable name.

BigFatLiar · 28/10/2022 19:34

Not exactly dated more traditional girls names, one of those three is one of our girls name di we think it's nice. They both have fairly traditional named, but then we're a pretty boring couple.

HuntingoftheSnark · 28/10/2022 19:30

Lily
Polly
Maisie
Dora
Hetty
Jemma

Kanaloa · 28/10/2022 19:25

I actually prefer Amy to Amelia - Amelia is crazy popular and as a pp said is only a few years off being dated itself!

MissyB1 · 28/10/2022 19:22

Some lovely names from when I was at school are due a come back, Jenny bring one!
Julia
Sarah
Laura
Jodi
Anne

woodhill · 28/10/2022 19:20

I think Amy is nice and Jenny

PeaceX · 28/10/2022 19:18

Jenny is a bit dated I guess but it's prettier than Holly or amy imo.
Emma is nicer than Amy imo, does he like that?

What about names like Anna and Rachel, Kate, Lucy and Sarah. All ''dated'' and also still used.
