He seems to like "dated" names

Expecting a girl in February and have been discussing names.

DH likes names such as Amy, Jenny and Holly. I don't mind Holly, but don't know if I would use it for a February baby (may be over thinking it though) I'm not a fan of Amy though. Nothing wrong with it, I just associate it with some mean girls from school. Plus, his Mum has a cat called Amy, so I feel like that would be weird 😂 Jenny I don't mind either but I not a huge fan if Jennifer.

Told my friends about his name suggestions and they said the names are "dated" which is making me more apprehensive in using them.

I've suggested names such as Rose and Amelia (thought we could compromise with the nickname Amy for that.) He didn't mind Rose, but wasn't keen on Amelia 🙄😂

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great?

(We also have a cat called Tilly if that's any help haha) 😁

Love the name Holly.
I'd spell it Hollie - it gets you away from the Christmas vibes too 😊

Anything but Amelia! So bored of hearing this name and all the variations on it.

It will be unlikely that any girls in your child’s school, let alone year will be called Jenny so I would use it if you like it. It’s a lovely name, Jennifer is an old Cornish name and is the same name as the Welsh Guinevere. It’s a rare name for anyone under 45 and is still a classic.

Starchipenterprise · 27/02/2023 14:43

How about Emilia? Had I realised this was an option, I would have named my daughter this.

We named our daughter Amy in 2021 and my family were very surprised and said it was unexpected as they considered it to be à 90s name. I loved the fact that it means beloved and actually dates back to medieval times. It's also short but fun to me! And fun she definitely is! Amy is a sister to Rose and Grace.

If he likes names ending in an ee sound, how about...

Penny
Lucy
Rosie
Sophie
Nancy
Annie
Mary

Saltywalruss · 29/10/2022 23:07

Most names will become " dated" after a few years. But if you give her a " dated" name now she will probably have a trendy name when she is 40 :-)

FennelAndOnions · 29/10/2022 10:39

Jessica ava molly rosie sophie chloe Ella ellie millie olivia alice grace lucy lily daisy poppy

They’re the names of practically every girl in the playground right now.

OooooSweetVampireOMine · 29/10/2022 07:33

Tbh none of the names you have mentioned are going to be unique OP.

Just pick something you both like and go for it!

How about:

Alice
Zoe

Lucy
Eloise
Ella
Iris

I don’t think people even consider when someone’s birthday is in relation to their name (after their first birthday anyway).

I’ve never given any thought to when the birthdays of people I’ve met called holly or June or may or whatever. it’s just their name. I don’t even see the two as related.

MassiveSalad22 · 29/10/2022 07:28

A cat called Amy is weird 😵‍💫

Thing is, super popular names like Amelia will be the Amy/Claire of the future. You want something timeless instead eg Charlotte, Elizabeth, if being dated bothers you!

FWIW my DD has an 80s name and it’s awesome. Also loooove Holly but didn’t work with our surname, and there’s a tiny Amy at school!

AllyCatTown · 29/10/2022 07:15

If you like Holly don’t be put off with it not being a December baby. I think most people wouldn’t assume that. Plus it’s not just Christmas but associated with winter and February is still winter.

A Jenny is a female donkey. It is also very dated. He’ll be putting Laura, Kayley, Naomi and Kerry on the table next.

leccybill · 28/10/2022 23:34

I have 2 Jennifers in Year 7, it's definitely on its way back!

I like your husband's names much more. I don't expect Hollys to be born in winter. I adore Jennifer and it's currently in the top three names if we have a daughter! I hate Amelia because of the "mealy" sound.

Other names I like in case your husband likes them too -

Sylvia
Daphne
Adelaide
Angela
Fiona
Anneliese
Gemma
Lorna
Hazel
Miranda
Sarah
Jessamy (could be shortened to Amy I guess).

Realityloom · 28/10/2022 23:14

Rose is definitely dated especially for a first name

Dadof5gremlins · 28/10/2022 23:06

Father here to a 7 yo girl called Jennifer-louise but we just say jenny. No one was called jenny or Jennifer in the years she was born or some after which is awesome. She's the only jenny in our town or even schools. Love the fact that no one has her name unlike my other daughter amelia- Rose but there are a few., Another child is Louise-marie. Best part aswell is when you shout jenny some middle aged women turns around and says yes.

jennywasafriendofmrbrightside · 28/10/2022 21:40

Jenny is a great name Grin

starfire88 · 28/10/2022 21:28

Thanks everyone for they're thoughts and suggestions. Found them really helpful 😊

Like I said, I don't mind Amy. I just have bad associations with the name unfortunately. I do like people's suggestions of Jenna, Lucy, Audrey, Cassie, Hazel and Molly (that last one was my GM name actually!) I'll mention them to DH and see if he likes any of those suggestions.

I'm still considering Holly, especially after reading others comments on here. I still like Rose but only as a first name. I know a lot of people who give the name Rose as a middle for their daughters, so I think it would be a bit more unique as a first name.

I know a toddler Jenny and it’s impossibly cute on her. I think it works as a stand-alone name, you don’t have to use Jennifer if you don’t want to.

Holly can be used for a birthday any time of year. The Hollys I know span the seasons.
