What do you think of Ellie? I'm thinking about adding it to our list. My husband likes it too.

Is it better to use Eleanor? Or Elinor? Which do you prefer? Just Ellie?

Is it too boring or overused?

I was born in the 90s, slightly before the huge Ellie-wave (it seems to have been common in the early 2000s, according to statistics) so I didn't encounter very many. My husband loves it, but he is very much into names that have already gone a bit out of style. I guess because they are more familiar to him? Among his favourites are Emma, Chloe, Hayley and Kaylie.

To me Ellie is still lovely and fits in with current styles more than with styles of the 90s. I personally like it better than Ella but I'd rather have Eleanor or Elinor as a full form whereas my husband would rather use Ellie on its own.

I'm biased as my daughter is Eleanor but goes by Ellie. I love both names, I like that she will get to choose which one she prefers as she gets older. Despite being a popular name, we don't actually meet many other girls of her age with the same name.

I love Ellie, also love Elle. The other names your husband suggested, my classroom
was absolutely full of all those names when I was at school (I’m early thirties). So they don’t really do it for me.

Eleanor/Ellie is sooo overused and boring. It's been so fashionable for the past 15-20 years and is actually already starting to sound a little dated.

My DD14 is Ellie, but on her birth certificate her name is Eleanor. I regret putting Eleanor down instead of just Ellie as we have always called her Ellie and she really hates Eleanor, it means that her passport, Drs, official documents etc are all Eleanor. I regret not just registering her as Ellie as we’ve never called her Eleanor and DD really dislikes it.

FayCarew · 26/10/2022 14:38

It was #3 in 2003 and has slipped to #78.
That may be because people are registering their Ellies as Eleanor, Elodie, Eloise, Eliana etc, but there will be a lot of Ellies around in her lifetime.
Ella is also popular and has been for a long time.

I have an Ellie. She's Eloise. Gets called Weeze a lot Smile

If you're set on Ellie I would go with Eleanor as a full name so she has the option to use the full name when she is older, Ellie sounds a little young for a professional woman somehow? You could call her Ellie day to day though

toastofthetown · 26/10/2022 14:04

Honestly Ellie is a total bore of a name to me. It’s so bland, overused, uninspired and unimaginative. That goes for pretty much all El- names.

00100001 · 26/10/2022 14:04

Use whatever form you want. If you like Ellie. Use Ellie.

There's absolutely nothing stopping her using any name she likes when she's older....it works both ways.

And Eleanor may call her self Ellie, despite it not being her name and nobody bats an eyelid.

An Ellie, deciding to use Eleanor... Just as fine!

containsnuts · 26/10/2022 14:01

It's a beautiful name but there will be at least three Ellie's everywhere you go. If you don't mind that then go for it!
