Ellie

What do you think of Ellie? I'm thinking about adding it to our list. My husband likes it too.

Is it better to use Eleanor? Or Elinor? Which do you prefer? Just Ellie?

Is it too boring or overused?

I was born in the 90s, slightly before the huge Ellie-wave (it seems to have been common in the early 2000s, according to statistics) so I didn't encounter very many. My husband loves it, but he is very much into names that have already gone a bit out of style. I guess because they are more familiar to him? Among his favourites are Emma, Chloe, Hayley and Kaylie.

To me Ellie is still lovely and fits in with current styles more than with styles of the 90s. I personally like it better than Ella but I'd rather have Eleanor or Elinor as a full form whereas my husband would rather use Ellie on its own.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Honestly Ellie is a total bore of a name to me. It’s so bland, overused, uninspired and unimaginative. That goes for pretty much all El- names.

I agree. To me it's up there with one of the most boring names!

lillila · 26/10/2022 18:56

Elena?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2022 18:50

Lovely sweet name. I think it sounds very refreshing now. I've not heard of an Ellie in years. Its fine as a standalone name. However if you do want a fuller name on her BC she doesn't have to be Eleanor she could Elizabeth
Elspeth. Elissa. Eloise.

IStandWithMaya · 26/10/2022 17:20

Eleanor or Elise (Eh-leeze)

napody · 26/10/2022 17:20

Don't think anyone has suggested Ellen yet? I love it, wish I'd used it.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 26/10/2022 17:19

I've never heard the name Kaylie before, and hope I never hear it again.

Ellie is fine, though (I'd use Eleanor/Elinor on the bc).

MichaelFabricantWig · 26/10/2022 17:18

I like Ellie but Eleanor I think is naff sorry

FennelAndOnions · 26/10/2022 17:18

I love Elise.

Wallywobbles · 26/10/2022 17:18

I love the French name Eliane. Not Elaine as most English people read it.

Twizbe · 26/10/2022 17:17

I know an Ellie who is Elise properly. I love Eleanor though.

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2022 17:17

@Knowivedonewrong , we are answering the OP's question, as requested; how does that make us dicks?

She'll be one of the younger Ellies. I think it's a bit nothingy. Not keen on Eleanor/Elinor. I'm not at all keen on your other names.

FennelAndOnions · 26/10/2022 17:15

I like it but I work with kids and have met bloody loads of them.

It also just gets overused with the filler middle names of May/Rose/Grace. There are sooooo many Ellie-May’s it’s got really dull.

LizTrussed · 26/10/2022 17:14

What about Elizabeth?

SallyWD · 26/10/2022 17:12

I like it but as a nickname for something longer.

sopeas · 26/10/2022 17:11

I love Eleanor.
What about Eliana? I feel like this is less popular than some of the other El- names and she can have Ellie as nn

Knowivedonewrong · 26/10/2022 16:46

Eleana here, always called Ellie. Born in 93. Still a lovely name. Don't listen to the dicks who say it's bland/boring, none of their business.

I’m an Eleanor officially but always an Ellie. I used to hate it but it’s really grown on me over the years and suits me, especially having the option of Eleanor even though I very rarely use it. I think Ellie does have a bit of a 90s/00s feel, but Eleanor is classic.

Direct quote from the OP:

I think it is and answered accordingly.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/10/2022 16:53

Elinor. If she wants to be Ellie she can shorten it.
Emma is classic.
Chloë and Kayleigh less so.

OriginalUsername2 · 26/10/2022 16:50

I love it!

Dassams · 26/10/2022 16:48

But the op was specifically asking our opinions?

My daughter is Ellie and it’s such a lovely name!

Kanaloa · 26/10/2022 16:42

It’s a nice name. There’s more Eleanors around now than just Ellie! I also like Eliana.

jeffbezoz · 26/10/2022 16:41

Elise is better

TheBirdintheCave · 26/10/2022 16:40

I prefer Welsh Elinor over Eleanor. Nothing wrong with Ellie as a nickname, it just feels a little saturated right now, probably because there are so many things it can be short for. Anything with 'el' in it could lead to Ellie: Annabel, Ariella, Melody etc.
