Two older siblings with traditional names. The middle names will be Taylor Jean.

Emilia.

Hermione is a dreadful name.

Spookypig · 26/10/2022 01:00

Hermione is amazing and underused and beautiful. Emilia is overdone and way too close to the even more overdone Amelia. Hermione is cool and Emilia very boring.

My name is Bella - I always get asked if I was named after the girl in twilight despite being significantly older. Any name can be subject to bullying. Go with Hermione which can and will be shortened up whatever suits. Millie, H, Mi, Mine etc.

If anyone references the hp reference the who cares - there are worse characters to named after!!

Also just throwing the name Hattie out there incase you wanted a different H name.

Yes Harriet was up there in an earlier long list, shortened to Hattie. I do love it. We're in Australia where Ts often get turned into Ds so we're not sure Haddie has the same pizzazz.

I'm now erring back to Hermione.. why is this so hard!

Hermione is so entwined with HP, I don't know why anyone would consider it. Emilia is such a popular/common name, there will be loads in her nursery/school year. Neither!

Waveacrossabay · 25/10/2022 23:48

Hermiones middle name in Harry Potter is Jean
So her name is Hermione Jean Granger does that change your view?

Pheepa · 25/10/2022 23:41

I have a Hermione. She gets Mione for short. We are HP fans, as is she, but it’s not the reason we chose it, we chose it because we loved it. A couple of people ask if she was named after Hermione Granger but never in a negative way. When we chose it the franchise was probably having a bit of a lull in popularity, books and films had been out a while, fantastic beasts and cursed child hadn’t happened yet. To my knowledge no one at school calls her Hermione Granger/makes fun of her/makes Harry Potter references and we’ve only ever met one other in passing.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 25/10/2022 23:39

Emilia & I love nn Emi . Good luck & Im sure once you see her face you will think “ oh yes , she looks like an ??? “

sunflowerdaisyrose · 25/10/2022 23:35

I love Emilia. Mia and Matilda are fine. Clover and Hermione definite no in my opinion.

Kanaloa · 25/10/2022 23:25

FirstFallopians · 25/10/2022 13:05

Hermione by a mile. Love it. Emilia is just a bit bleh and sounds the same as Amelia in a lot of accents.

However, in HP Hermione’s full name is Hermione Jean Granger, so your middle name choice might mean she shares even more of her name with arguably the most famous female fictional character of the last 25 years.

Was just about to say the same. I do prefer Hermione to Emilia (just so popular nowadays) but Hermione Granger’s middle name is also Jean. I just think it’s a bit much maybe.

Undergreen · 25/10/2022 23:15

Definitely Hermione. It is strong and I don’t think the HP connection matters.

Emilia is so wet and SO overused.

Would you rather me an Emilia with half a dozen other Emilia/Amelias/Emily/Amelies in your class? Or would you rather be a Hermione?

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/10/2022 23:14

I like Matilda too, though very overdone in the Uk.

Clover is dopey (cartoon cows etc), Mia is nothing-y - v overdone in Uk also. Better as a short form for Maria if you must.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/10/2022 23:12

Hermione

I like Emilia but it’s so overused, and that’s before you take into account all the other Em names

RainbowSlide · 25/10/2022 21:51

Thanks for all your responses! I'm also plagued by the hp reference, and should have mentioned i knew about the hermione Jean thing too so definitely not a great idea. Shame as it's a family name.

We don't have so many E names where I am, more A ones so might keep Emilia there at the top for now. I'm 38 weeks so really should have a plan by now...

I guess I like the shortening to Emi, whereas shortening hermione is a bit trickier.

Others on the short list are:

Clover
Mia
Matilda

I would probably avoid either name. I don't like Emilia at all - too bland/popular and I personally don't like the sound of the name. Hermione I love but it's just too associated with HP. How about something else Greek or Roman? Livia? Gaia? Penelope? Julia?

Whistlesandbell · 25/10/2022 19:17

Emilia

sopeas · 25/10/2022 19:15

Hermione

ScruffMuffin · 25/10/2022 17:15

Emilia is extremely pretty and works better with the strong and slightly less feminine Taylor Jean.

Thatskindafun · 25/10/2022 15:49

Hermione (Taylor) Jean
like hermione jean (granger)
Don’t do that to the kid.

the name is too iconic for that character and little known outside of that, add in the same middle name and it’s too much.

WaltzingWaters · 25/10/2022 15:44

Emilia.

RandomMusings7 · 25/10/2022 15:36

Definitely not Hermione!

IStandWithMaya · 25/10/2022 15:35

Emilia

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/10/2022 15:34

I love Hermione and HP but what if she didn't? It is still such a huge cultural icon and so signs of it diminishing.

dream28 · 25/10/2022 15:28

I would choose Hermione over Emilia, but I personally love Hermione for somebody else child. I wouldn't personally use it.
That said, I would not choose Emilia, rather I would pick Amelia.

but for you, Hermione definitely.

Lilacsunflowers · 25/10/2022 14:59

Emilia/Amelia/Emily are sooo overused.

Hermione is much more interesting and memorable!
