Thalia? And any other suggestions for girl or boy names DH and I might like?

It's my elderly mother's name. She pronounces it THAY-lee-ah. She hates it!

Cas112 · 24/10/2022 19:05

Ta-lee-a

Lulu1919 · 24/10/2022 19:03

Ta Lee a

OoooSweetChildOMine · 24/10/2022 18:58

Tar Lee A

ivfbabymomma1 · 24/10/2022 18:57

Tally-ah

Foxtrot101 · 24/10/2022 18:27

Tah Leah

Kite22 · 24/10/2022 17:18

The one I know is "Tar-leah" with the emphasis on the first syllable but, I saw it written down first and I had to ask, as wasn't sure.

(Ta - as in 'thank you' / tar and tah would all sound the same to me).

TheSausageKingofChicago · 24/10/2022 17:15

Tah-lee-a

to rhyme with Aliyah

TootMootZoot · 24/10/2022 17:13

I would have guessed Thai-lee-a. Looks like I'd have been very wrong

NiqueNique · 24/10/2022 16:17

That would just look misspelt or made up. I think OP is right, best to go with another name.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad I asked! We definitely prefer the softer 'th' pronunciation rather than a hard 't', so I think this one is off the cards.

What about altering the spelling slightly like Thallya, Thallia? The double L would make me say 'th' at the beginning for some reason

Whizzi24 · 24/10/2022 15:53

Tar - leeah

I'd pronounce it Tha Lee a, that's how I say it if I'm asking for the gorgeous elegant white narcissus of that name. If it was a person I'd probably ask. All the pronunciations I've heard are nice.

Cleopatra67 · 24/10/2022 15:38

@Axahooxa - but Greek names have accepted anglicised spellings and pronunciations and Thalia is spelt that way and pronounced Tahlya. I’m Greek and loved Hero as a name - in Greek it’s pronounced ee- ro with a rolled r and accent on the second syllable whereas the accepted English pronunciation is like super hero - which I wasn’t so keen on.

NannyR · 24/10/2022 15:37

I would go for TAH-lia, although I once knew a woman who pronounced it Thail-lia, the first syllable like fail, but with a th.

Cleopatra67 · 24/10/2022 15:34

petitdonkey · 24/10/2022 12:12

I’d pronounce the ‘th’ in that- personally I prefer Talia or Tahlia although I think that theoretically the pronunciation is the same! It was one of dh’s favourite names but I just couldn’t get my head around the pronunciation. Like us it two syllables (tal-ya) or three (tah-lee-a)

Thalia is the conventional spelling - pronounced Tahlya - Greek muse, can’t remember what of.

Algor1thm · 24/10/2022 15:32

@Lilacsunflowers honestly I forget that there are UK accents that would pronounce the 'r' in 'tar'. To me, 'tar' and 'ta' (as in thank you) are said exactly the same way!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/10/2022 15:29

Tah lee a

Lilacsunflowers · 24/10/2022 15:29

Oh I see. But the added R confuses those of us who DO pronounce the R.

Tha - that sounds right, withou the R?!

Algor1thm · 24/10/2022 15:26

@Lilacsunflowers most UK accents aren't rhotic so 'r' sounds aren't produced - ar and ah are the same

Lilacsunflowers · 24/10/2022 15:25

Why are people adding in an R?

Thalia is Tah-lee-a

Algor1thm · 24/10/2022 15:11

In the south, t-ar-l-ee-uh
In the north, t-a-l-ee-uh

Personally I wouldn't use the 'Th' spelling if this is the pronunciation you're looking for. I'd use Talia, Tahlia or Taliah

NiqueNique · 24/10/2022 15:02

TAH-lee-ah

Even nicer to see this!

NiqueNique · 24/10/2022 15:01

Soubriquet · 24/10/2022 12:14

Tah-leah

This. And it’s so nice to see an ‘ah’.
