Can people with older kids help me with this middle name q?

Our first son has two middle names, both family names to honour people who died whilst I was pregnant. I'm pregnant again with another boy and not fussed necessarily about this one also having two middle names. But is this the sort of things kids care about when they get older?! Should they both have two middle names to be fair?! Thanks!

ds and dd1 both have one middle name
dd2 has 2.

the reason is that ds and dd1 both had a family name from each side. (sort of) so first name and then middle name both link to family.

but dd2s first name is not connected to the family, so she has two middle names - one from each side.

None of them have ever been in the slightest bit bothered, although the fact that there is a logical explanation probably helps.
They are all older teens now.

In fact now that I think about it, I have one middle name and my brothers both have two.
I've never really noticed.

Again, middle names linked to family, and my middle name is pretty special to me as it is my mum's and her mum's and I gave it to dd1.

My three sibling all have middle names...I don't have any. I'm the oldest, and even now, in my 50s, this still bothers me a bit 🤣

As a child, I used to truly believe that it was because my parents hadn't wanted me...now I know that it was because they 'became' (🤣🤣🤣🤣) more 'middle-class-striving' after they had me, as my dad got a promotion, so thought they'd better 'be posher' and give their children middle names. Which is kind of funny, as I'm the only one out of the four of us to have gone on to any sort of 'middle class' life as the assistant head teacher in a large primary school (I don't think of myself in that way, but my parents definitely did when I went to uni, my youngest brother went on to deal drugs, my other brother ended up in jail and my sister married the local 'bad boy' and moved into a council house...my mum never really recovered from that 🤣) She was a bit Hyacinth Bouquet, my mum 😍

So yeah...give all your children the same number of names...just in case they have overactive imaginations, like I did 🤦‍♀️🤣

I have a middle name, as does my brother. My sister doesn't and she was so jealous as a child she made one up!

itsgettingweird · 15/10/2022 14:41

For some reason both me and my brother (oldest and youngest) have a middle name and my sister doesn't.

I don't think we ever knew why and it certainly doesn't seem to have been an issue. Unless my sister has kept quiet about it (unlikely knowing her!).

We only use first names in life anyway.

Malfi · 15/10/2022 14:37

I’d definitely give them the same number of names. I think it’s unfair otherwise.

VerbenaGirl · 15/10/2022 14:37

Mine are older teens now, both with two middle names. I think it would niggle them if one only had one. My Mum is in her 80s and is still bothered that as the second of four girls, she’s the only one without a middle name.

Magissa · 15/10/2022 14:33

My mum is one of 11 and the only one with no middle name. I think it bothers her. As if less thought was put in.
I have three. Two have middle names one doesn't. It doesn't bother him. He is named after a much loved member of the family and it's a great name.

threegoodthings · 15/10/2022 14:32

I have 2 middle names but my younger siblings only have one. I don't think they care, if they do they've never mentioned it!

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 15/10/2022 14:31

I have 2 middle names, my brother had 1. Don't think he ever cared (sadly he's been dead some years)

My oldest has 2 middle names, his 4 younger brothers all have 1. None of them have ever commented on it. They are young adults/teens. It's not something that's ever come up really.

Sackeforbadhips · 15/10/2022 14:29

Myself and my siblings all have 2. Reason being my DF only has one, his sister had 2, he was annoyed by that.

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/10/2022 14:26

I am in my 50s and still miffed my sister has a middle name and I don't, even though it's Margaret.

I do think one will do though. All mine have a middle name that I love.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/10/2022 14:22

Not quite sure where the other half of my post went!

My grandmother has 1 name, my great aunt 3. I think if the story about why my great aunt has more names than my grandmother has been repeated to multiple generations it suggests my grandmother was bothered by it.

Give your children the same number of names whether that is zero or three.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/10/2022 14:19

My grandmother was born over a hundred years ago and was the second of twins. We all know she was second because she got fewer names, the story is that her elder sister was being named (she has 2 middle names) when the midwife realised there was another baby. A

Suedomin · 15/10/2022 13:14

Also I don't have a middle name. My siblings do. It's not anything that has ever bothered me.

TimBoothseyes · 15/10/2022 13:11

DD has no middle name. I never got the point of them and it was hard enough choosing her 1st name. The only person who was ever bothered about it was exMiL, nobody else (including DD), cared at all.

Suedomin · 15/10/2022 13:11

One of my children has two middle names and one has one. All the names are meaningful . It's not something they have ever mentioned or cared about.

JenniferWooley · 15/10/2022 13:11

Not necessarily the number of middle names but the quality (for want of a better word) of the middle name is an issue for me.

DBro's each got a grandfathers name as a middle name, perfectly reasonable names - think along the lines of James & William, I got my maternal grandmothers maiden name, think along the lines of Cockburn.

I get that the reason behind it is tradition but I'd have much preferred either of my grandmothers Christian names as a middle name which were along the lines of Margaret & Christine.

BonnieWeeJeannieMcColl · 15/10/2022 13:11

DH has two middle names; his sister was supposed to have two, but somehow ended up with only one on her birth certificate.

It bothered her in her teens because she really liked the name that was missed out, and thought she might have chosen to be known by that one.

I think it still annoys her a bit.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 15/10/2022 13:10

I am one of four siblings. My eldest sibling has 2 middle names the rest of us have one.
My eldest has 2 middle names. My other two have one.

It's a non issue for everyone.

Johnnysgirl · 15/10/2022 13:07

My aunt has 1 middle name, her brothers all have 2. She's in her 70s now and still mentions the unfairness from time to time
She sounds a bit nuts, if you'll pardon me saying so. Nobody gives a toss.

LimpBiskit · 15/10/2022 13:06

Depends on the child I guess. I've never used my middle name and wouldn't miss it if it just went poof.

InsertPunHere · 15/10/2022 13:04

I have none, my sibling has none, my children have none. We’ve not felt the lack.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/10/2022 13:03

i think i would have to have two

FennelAndOnions · 15/10/2022 13:02

I have one my brother has two. I can’t say it’s anything I even think about.

JacquelineCarlyle · 15/10/2022 12:59

I gave my DS1 1 middle name and then gave the next 2 DSs both 2 middle names. Didn't think much of it as I don't have a middle name at all, but when eldest DS was about 10 or so, he told me he was very annoyed that he only had the one middle name when his brothers had 2. I'd no idea this was even something that could bother someone!

For that reason (& if I were to do it all again), I'd give them the same number of middle names.
