My daughter has 4 Sophia’s in her class alone.

Also Rueben seems to be the most common boys name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My DD’s year 2 class had:

Eva (pn evva)
Eva (pn eeva)
Evie
Evelyn
Aoife
and a boy called Evan.

Turns out that they all sound very similar across a busy classroom.

The other duplicates are not necessarily the ones you would expect. There are a lot of Zoes and even a class with two Camillas, which I didn’t expect.

Medoca · 22/10/2022 23:07

So many Leos recently!!

Fivebeanchilli · 22/10/2022 22:46

Oh and Leo

Fivebeanchilli · 22/10/2022 22:38

The most popular names in my children's classes over the years (now age 15-19) have been:
Isabel/la (at one point 1/3 of the class!)
Grace
Anna
Hannah
Sophie
Freya
Jack
Arthur
Felix
Oscar
Gabriel
Ross (I think this must be a weird anomaly but there were 4 in the year at once)
Toby
Noah
Joseph

AutumnColours9 · 22/10/2022 22:23

Theo
Lola
Oliver
Ella

Why sad though? It’s a lovely name so others like it too. I don’t really understand the problem.

Because anything that is very fashionable becomes overused and eventually feels 'dated'!

And having a popular name makes it difficult to be easily identified. You'll always be known as Jack Surname or Evie Surname!

I disagree - statistically there are some popular names that are perpetually well used and therefore very unlikely to ever date in future.

There can be a risk with some uncommon names too - for example, if someone was named Noah or Ava 40 years ago they would have really stood out/be "easily identified", but now... (although at least everyone would guess them to be much younger than they are😂). It can be hard to guess what can have a popularity surge - Darkergreener helps but it sometimes only takes a strong pop culture reference for a name to soar.

I completely understand why people chose popular names (providing you can manage to avoid the ones most likely to date). Yes, you risk there being 2 in a school class - although that's a lot less likely than in our/our parents generation, but there's also little risk of anyone making assumptions about their background either which might be an advantage for them.

I personally adore some really unusual names, but I do kind of feel there's more risk of the child not liking their name. It's really hard for anyone to dislike Jack or Evie imo - at worst they're just "blah".

Incidentally I'm surprised at some of the names people are saying they know multiples of - some seem obvious but others must be very area dependant (and there's little way to guess that unfortunately!)

soulinablackberrypie · 21/10/2022 20:42

My DC are grown up now and I don't work in a school any more, but I do meet a few children through my current job. There aren't many duplicates though, and the only ones I can think of are actually quite uncommon names - Rupert and Luna.

So surprised and sad about Primrose, it’s my fave ;(

Something often drives these sudden spurts of popularity. I'm guessing 'Minecraft' probably plays no small part in the popularity of Rueben (even if he does get turned into a pork chop!) and 'The Hunger Games' is probably responsible for Primrose.

I'm sure when Collins was dreaming up the names for her characters she was standing in front of a spice rack, considering so many have names like Cinna and Clove. As for Katniss and Peeta, if you 'portmanteau' their names in the same way as Tomkat or Bennifer, you end up with either Katpee or Peeniss...

Can't see that catching on somehow!

Whizzi24 · 21/10/2022 06:22

As someone who grew up being the only person I ever met with my name, I deliberately chose something more popular for my DC. I was super shy and hated sticking out.

There are so many names used now thay even the popular ones are not ubiquitous. I am a primary school teacher and there are only two classes in the whole school with a double up of names (George and Harry).

Lilacsunflowers · 19/10/2022 23:13

I'd rather blend in.

What does that even mean ? Confused

Names are meant to identify us. Names are meant to be memorable and identifiable.

The more unusually named kids stick out more, I remember much more about Zelda, Bryony and Erica than I do about the kids with more common names (not that they're not interesting kids, the names just sort of merge in my head and I can't remember who is who)

Yes, I know soo many adults called Steve or Sarah that meeting another one makes it difficult to remember their names...

Unusual names are much more memorable Smile

Not everyone wants a memorable name. My name is unusual and I hate it. I'd rather blend in.

Mine is a teenager. Pretty much all the boys in his year are called Dylan or Callum. It's so confusing - he has two Dylans and three Callums in his friendship group.

Interestingly my DD has one of the names mentioned frequently here, yet she is the only one in her year, in a 3 form entry school and no one in her brothers year has the same name as her either. None when she was at nursery or any of her clubs.

When we chose it I knew I would run the risk of multiple kids with the same name, which is what I had growing up. But we have never met one other girl with the same name, she's 10 now. Yet it's mentioned frequently on here, I guess we've just been lucky.

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 18/10/2022 21:40

I think you are right about them coming back.

I volunteer with a youth group (age 5-7) and the most common names we've had over the years are:
Ava
Maisey
Macey
Milly
Molly
Amelie/Amelia
Isla
Ruby
Eve/Eva/Evie
Emmie
Olivia
Charlotte (must have had about 20 Charlotte's in the last 10 years)
Freya
Alice
Imogen
Emily
Choe
Hannah

Workawayxx · 17/10/2022 11:08

@FreshCop yes, Andrew and Martha aren't the usual names! I think it's just one of those things. Actually, I think 2 of the Andrews are named after their Dad. I'm in Oxfordshire.

I also know loads of baby/toddler Arthurs and Arlos. Out of my baby massage class of about 10, 3 were called Arlo!
