Sunny, short for...

(For a girl)

I like Sunday but not sure I can quite get DH there, he's not quite as brave as me. I've had a search, and not keen on suggestions of Soleil or Marisol as we're British, and it seems a little pretentious to me without European connections. Connections by meaning alone (e.g. saw Aurelia suggested because it means golden) are a bit of a stretch for us... it would need to have related sounds in it.

Any suggestions?

Soleil (French for sun)

steppemum · 13/10/2022 16:42

I do think personally that if you choose names like Summer, Sunday etc then it needs to be connected.
So I think Sunday should be born on Sunday?
Summer is not a December birthday?

and so on.

caitlinrose · 13/10/2022 15:21

This may be a tiny bit of a stretch but still workable, in my opinion:

Sonia

caitlinrose · 13/10/2022 15:19

It doesn't make sense as a nickname for something that just means "sunny" or "golden" like Aurelia. Most people will not get the connection.

Sunniva is pretty and an old Scandinavian name.

Sunita is pretty too.

This! It's beautiful. Norwegian.

This is the most logical

or Susannah - which is a more workable first name in the UK

I don’t mind Sunday myself. But not Summer or Sunshine (or Sunflower) - once hippy names, but now downmarket. Also she might not appreciate the pressure to be sunny when she grows up, the only Joy I met loathed her name and was anything but joyous

Oneandone · 10/10/2022 10:25

Susanna
Savannah (which is a hot, sunny place)
Sienna
Summer is also more of a 'proper name' than sunny so might be more acceptable for your husband?

Oneandone · 10/10/2022 10:22

Honestly I think as long as you choose a name beginning with s you could use sunny.

Sarah
Susie/Susan
Sally

Mumsnut · 10/10/2022 07:54

Sonia, Selina

MermaidSwimming · 10/10/2022 07:41

I know a sunshine who goes by sunny

Surreality22 · 10/10/2022 07:19

I used to work with someone who had a daughter called Sunshine, Sunny for short. His son also had a slightly different, "positive" sounding name.

Scifijulai · 10/10/2022 07:14

*lady!

Scifijulai · 10/10/2022 07:14

There is an (older) lagy where I live called Sunny, her actual name
is Sunflower. Maybe classed as slightly ‘hippy’ nowadays?

funder · 10/10/2022 07:10

I agree @JessesMum777888 ... Sunday is lovely. Work on him OP

Ihavehadenoughalready · 10/10/2022 00:10

Maybe the spelling Sunni would look more like an official name to your husband?

JessesMum777888 · 09/10/2022 21:46

I love Sunday.

work on your husband ! X

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/10/2022 21:44

And I think Sunny is adorable on a toddler! It would take a certain type of personality to pull off as an adult though, so I'm glad you are giving her a choice.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/10/2022 21:42

Sunniva is the obvious one if you like more exotic names - although still very useable imo. Or Susanna if you want more classic - but with that you more likely risk other nn's (Sansa, Suki, Annie, Susie etc) although you could see that as giving her more options?

theydontspeakforus · 09/10/2022 20:58

(Sunday is actually lovely).

theydontspeakforus · 09/10/2022 20:58

Sunderella.

frogswimming · 09/10/2022 20:57

I think Sunday is more of a recognisable name than Sunny for a girl.

Kanaloa · 09/10/2022 20:47

I mean obviously there are out there names like Sunshine/Sundance etc but if your DH thinks Sunny is too out there he likely won’t take to any of those out there names.

Kanaloa · 09/10/2022 20:46

Other than something like Sunniva there really aren’t any names that would reasonably give Sunny as a shortening. There’s no point naming your child Madison so that you can call her Sunny day to day - and anyway she’d likely end up as Maddie. It would be better to find a name you and your husband both actually like than to try to find a name he agrees with that can be twisted to have Sunny as a nickname.

toastedcat · 09/10/2022 20:45

DotDotDotDotDot · 09/10/2022 20:34

Sunniva - Means “sun gift”

This! It's beautiful. Norwegian.

dollius · 09/10/2022 20:43

Solveig

Dreamstosell · 09/10/2022 20:41
