Archie for a girl?

cluckinhell0 · 07/10/2022 18:53

Having second girl in December and just watched the Lazarus project and there is a character Archie (think shirt for Archana in her case)

Never met a female Archie but it's growing on me. But can't shake the fact she'll likely always be expected to turn up and be a boy unless it really catches on in popularity!

Thoughts?

I used to like the name Archie but I got put off as a couple of people I don’t like have sons named this. It’s definitely a boys name, and it wouldn’t sound very nice on a girl. There are plenty of nice girls names (and unisex ones) which aren’t “princessy”. Please don’t do this to your poor child. What about Arabella?

One of my fave actresses is Archie Panjabi. She’s an Archana. I have a boy Archie and think it’s a fab nn for a girl.

I was thinking of her as well, but didn’t know it was short for Archana. It sounds so pretty. I think it might be cultural appropriation if you’re not of that culture though?

No.

Girl variants of Archibald from the Scottish records that could all be shortened to Archie:

Archanna
Archerine
Archetta
Archiana
Archibel
Archibella
Archibina
Archieina
Archibalda
Archibaldina
Archibaldine
Archibaldrina
Archimina
Archina
Archine
Archivina

Archina and Archibella were the mostly commonly used after Archibaldina. I have a soft spot for Archina myself...

These are all much nicer than the male name Archibald!

Archie is a cute nickname for either gender

Why would anyone do that to their daughter?!

Maybe her name was Jamelia in full

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 10/10/2022 19:33

Archina nn Archie could work. I think it’s really pretty either way and quirky names usually drive me crazy but I think this is really cute!

Butterbeer4All · 10/10/2022 18:31

No. Don't make her life difficult.

TrashyPanda · 10/10/2022 18:14

and of course, in Scotland “ina” was traditionally pronounced “eye-na”.

TrashyPanda · 10/10/2022 18:12

Archana is lovely

Archie is not.
especially when said in a broad Scottish accent, where it becomes Erchie.

It's a horrible name, but it's so cutesy it would actually be nicer on a girl.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 10/10/2022 00:02

My thought on Archie for a girl is no.

Oneandone · 09/10/2022 18:52

I actually like it as a nickname for a girl but would have to find a feminine full name.

Arnaquer · 08/10/2022 18:17

God no

Crankley · 08/10/2022 18:07

Pathetically try hard.

ChagSameachDoreen · 08/10/2022 18:06

I taught a female Alfie undergrad, and she always looked a bit sheepish when her name was said.

You could have Archie as a nn for Artemis.

Or for Ariagne

DSGR · 08/10/2022 14:57

No, don’t do this

genuinelyaskingforafriend · 08/10/2022 14:54

Maybe a formal name of something like Arianna and then Archie as a nickname?

outtheshowernow · 08/10/2022 14:31

No but do know a girl Tobi and I like it

Mischance · 08/10/2022 14:22

No - not a good idea. She will think you wanted a boy, having already got a girl.

gogohmm · 08/10/2022 14:21

We chose names that worked well in English but also would be suitable in most cultures (both their names are common in western/Islamic cultures and also eastern. Means wherever they live they will be ok (one is living overseas now) plus they are professional sounding for cv's in long form (nun's available)

You are naming a child for life not a pet rabbit - think about the consequences.

LesLavandes · 08/10/2022 13:25

Nope

Shiningstarr · 08/10/2022 13:24

No.

Poor kid.

You're having a girl and the world is your oyster, name-wise, but you want a boys name for her.

What's wrong with normal, human names?
