How popular is….

Ethan? We are struggling for a boys name we both agree on and seem to have finally settled on Ethan Lucas. We both like it but looking at the baby name lists it seems to have been in the top 10 for years which we would normally want to avoid. However, between the 4 of us and asking a few friends we don’t actually know of very many and a few of us work in schools. Has it become more popular recently so everyone this year will be called it or is it just one of those consistently popular ones that ticks along? How many do you know and are they all under school age so we will maybe be suprised in a few years when they all start school?! Thanks!

I love Ethan Lucas. They’re fine names and suit all ages.

S25 · 06/10/2022 22:56

Ethan Lucas is a great name, go for it! :)

SingingSands · 06/10/2022 22:21

I only know two - ages 14 and 18. Lovely name. Easily pronounced and spelt.

Well, mostly easily pronounced... the priest at the christening kept pronouncing it "eh-than" to rhyme with Bethan - we were all very bemused!

musicandpassion · 06/10/2022 22:08

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say I find it unbearably dull. My kids have two cousins called Ethan and I feel like I see them everywhere. Maybe I'm in an Ethan hotspot too. However, I'm a stranger on the internet, who cares what I think? If you love it then go for it Smile

ohmyohmy123 · 06/10/2022 21:34

I lived in london for 10 years and only knew 1 Ethan - he is 22 now.

I now live in the midlands and don't know of any, neither at my childrens schools, local area etc etc.

It's a lovely name.

Pheepa · 06/10/2022 21:33

Thank you everyone, so happy we finally have an option that we can agree on!

I know one and he is 23, I think its a great name- one of those old names that doesn't feel old manish

Kanaloa · 06/10/2022 21:24

I’ve looked after 3, which sounds like a lot but it’s really nothing! It’s a lovely name, strong sounding, familiar without being crazy popular. It’s nice.

puddingandsun · 06/10/2022 21:23

We know one aged 5.

I don't like it as much as I did a few years back... (5-8 years back)

But as far as it being very common, I wouldn't worry about it judging from what you said re where you live.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 06/10/2022 21:23

I know one who’s 11/12, but as a primary supply teacher, I haven’t come across another in ages.

Dragonblue8 · 06/10/2022 21:21

3 children and I only know of one Ethan (in dc’s class) aged 4/5.

GoneForFood · 06/10/2022 21:17

I have children ages between 3 to 18 and there’s only been 1 Ethan at any of their schools/clubs in all that time (South Wales)

WildCherryBlossom · 06/10/2022 21:16

I know two through activities the DC do but there hasn't been a single one in any of their school classes so it doesn't seem that widely used in our neck of the woods. Well known, easy to spell and pronounce. Seems like a decent choice if you like it!

MintyGreenDreams · 06/10/2022 21:15

I've worked in a primary for years and there's not a lot of Ethans ime

Lancasterlassie · 06/10/2022 21:15

I only know one and he’s more a friend of a friend and is about 14 now

and I know a LOT of kids between work and my own kids at school.

Pheepa · 06/10/2022 21:13

Thanks @bloominglovelyorange it was baby centre that had it at number 8 in 2022 but can see its lower on ONS so that’s good. Definitely like the downward trajectory!

OP posts:
bloominglovelyorange · 06/10/2022 21:11

@Pheepa you said Ethan is top 10 but it's absolutely not, it's about to leave top 50, it's been going down each and every year since 2011 when it was number 11 - so it wasn't even too 10 then. Majority of Ethan's are over 10 years old now and will have left school by the one your son starts

bloominglovelyorange · 06/10/2022 21:09

I think @CastleTower has said it all really. It's pretty low now in the official charts, it's on a big downward trajectory since 2011 and will probably leave the top 50 in next years official statistics
theres more Ethan's at school now than there will be in 6 years when your son is at school as it's going down 📉 every single year in charts . I only know 1 Ethan

Imogensmumma · 06/10/2022 20:55

Great name , I’m a teacher too there is probably one in every year level or every other level but that’s because it is a solid name. I think it’s a great choice

Also you are right Lucas is more popular so stay with Ethan - plus Ethan sounds more robust

Roxmum14 · 06/10/2022 20:52

There are 2 Ethan's in my sons class and they're all age 6

KirstenBlest · 06/10/2022 20:50

I know several but they are not babies. A few people have said that it was on their list and they wish they'd used it.

I must be in the ethan hotspot

Pheepa · 06/10/2022 20:38

I also like Lucas @17caterpillars1mouse but feel it might be more trendy the next few years due to stranger things? Also we have a nephew called Luke who will be godfather so like the idea of using Lucas as a middle name as we like a family connection in the middle

Pheepa · 06/10/2022 20:37

Ah really @ProperVexed, where are you? Is it an Ethan hotspot?! I have worked in one for a few years now and not known of one at work or my daughter’s primary schools

OP posts:
ProperVexed · 06/10/2022 20:30

I work in a small primary school. There seems to be an Ethan in every class.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/10/2022 20:26

There is a 6 year old Ethan in my dds class but that's the only one I know of. It's a nice name, though I personally prefer Lucas
