I love that name

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/10/2022 16:53

Shouldn’t it be Cillian?

mathanxiety · 06/10/2022 16:53

@Lilacsunflowers

Hmm Biscuit

Seriously, your comments are going from silly to ludicrous.

LakeIsle48 · 06/10/2022 16:52

My brother 56, is called Cillian. Everyone calls him Kill or Killer!!! Not so nice

mathanxiety · 06/10/2022 16:47

Killian is a perfectly fine anglicisation and germanisation of Cillian.

It's spelled Killian and Kilian in Germany, where St Killian worked as a missionary (around Wurzburg, in present day northern Bavaria). He is also venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church, feast day 9 July.

JaneJeffer · 06/10/2022 15:50

And all those Kil place names were anglicised by, you know, English people. Fancy that.

Killian unfortunately doesn't travel well into English speaking countries!

It's fine in German or French as Kill has no meaning, but in English it has a terrible meaning Shock

The entiire country of Ireland speaks English and manage cope with every fifth town starting with the sound kill... Kildare, Kilkenny, Kill, Killcullen, Kilmacthomas...

Jacketandbeans · 06/10/2022 15:14

@Lilacsunflowers Cillian is a top ten name in Ireland. Ireland is an English speaking country, and they don't seem to have an issue with it, in fact it has flown up the charts as people like it so much. It's also popular over there spelled Killian. You might not like it, but it works perfectly well over here if people are a bit less close minded.

Lilacsunflowers · 06/10/2022 14:45

Although Killem would be worse Grin

Lilacsunflowers · 06/10/2022 14:44

What about Killian, Killeen or Killen as a surname?

Most people would probably not want to have 'Kill' as part of their (sur)name.

Killen is particularly bad Blush

Hop243 · 06/10/2022 11:38

Crikey, there seems to be a lot of hatred for "Killian" as a first name! What about Killian, Killeen or Killen as a surname?

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 06/10/2022 10:25

There's also the high-end Kilian perfume brand. I think the founder is from the French Hennessy cognac family.

Yes one thing that is great about the name Killian is that it is quite international. The French tend to use Kylian, Germans use Kilian, Irish tend to use the traditional Cillian but also Killian.
This was one of the things that sold it to me, as I wanted a name that travelled well but was traditionally Irish.

ChateauMargaux · 05/10/2022 21:18

And how has no one mentioned Kylian Mbappé.

ChateauMargaux · 05/10/2022 21:17

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 04/10/2022 00:32

It’s quite popular in Germany too. I think it comes from a Saint Killian who did something of a grand tour round Europe, leaving his name behind him in a number of countries. The nickname in Germany is ‚Kili‘ (pron. killy).

Fascinating: stkiliansheritagecentre.ie/about-st-kilian/. Things I never knew about the man from Kilmacalogue.

Galarunner · 03/10/2022 21:17

A really well known ultra runner and mountaineer is called Kilian Jornet. The name has a good association for me. I think he is originally from the Paye Basque.

We were watching a fab documentary about him just yesterday!!

KitchenSupper · 05/10/2022 20:30

In other languages it’s correctly spelt with a K but mumsnet gets quite xenophobic about differently spelt names, though I think people in general are a bit more tolerant.

NoJuliana · 05/10/2022 20:26

I love it. So much!

loveisanopensore · 05/10/2022 20:22

Lovely name.

St Cillian was Killian in Bavaria I think.

Mumsnet is usually anti irish names.

lickenchugget · 05/10/2022 20:17

It’s Cillian.

What’s with all the posts on terrible K names this week?

Jacketandbeans · 05/10/2022 20:15

Well I've got a Cillian OP. This thread isn't nice to read. I personally think it's a gorgeous classic Irish name, it sounds both strong and elegant. Our gets called Cilly (Killy) by family as he is still a toddler, but mostly Cillian by people outside the family.
I like the Killian spelling as well but prefer Cillian. Killian will ensure it is never misprononced as Sillian. It's a great conversation starter, as people often ask if we have Irish heritage, which we do.

Fifthtimelucky · 04/10/2022 23:17

I rather like it because it always makes me think of Narnian princes like Tirian and Rilian!

BusyBeaMe · 04/10/2022 20:40

Awful

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 04/10/2022 20:32

Love Cillian
