Keane or Kieran?

Which name do you like more? Why?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
DesMoulinsRouge · 04/10/2022 20:23

She said the dodgy people were English though

UnagiForLife · 04/10/2022 20:23

Kieran is the better of the two, Keane is a band or the word Keen spelt incorrectly to my eyes/ears. What about Keanu? Like Reeves.

Foxesforme · 04/10/2022 20:18

@Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo
You know the names are Irish and yet you said that, for you, the names seem connected to 'dodgy' people and put you in mind of drunken bar fights and drugs? That sounds like prejudice to me too, whatever your background.
'Prejudice is cultivated by stereotypes' @giantwaterbottle.

I prefer Kieran OP, I see Keane as a surname.

That in no way means you don’t have some form of internalised prejudice.

Are you insane?

Prejudice against ... myself?!

My own parent and family?

My friends?

The people I grew up around and the place I grew up IN for a significant period of my life? A place I love dearly?

Come on now.

Thank you @giantwaterbottle for seeing what I was saying!

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/10/2022 06:56

Both horrendous.

AuntTwacky · 04/10/2022 01:34

Neither

Daisybuttercup12345 · 04/10/2022 01:02

Kieran
Kaiden
Callam
Craig
Carter.
Kelvin
Kyran

giantwaterbottle · 03/10/2022 13:05

@LoupsGarous I am Irish and I agree with her. I think Keiran and Keane CAN be associated with rough English people, and I don't mean all and it is a stereotype.

Cian and Ciaran, not so much!

kuvira · 03/10/2022 12:53

I'm not a huge fan of either. Keane is a surname and Kieran is dated to me (from an Irish POV). (And before anyone argues that Harrison etc is a surname, that's true but Irish people generally don't use surnames as first names. There are a few exceptions, but Keane isn't one of them.) If I had to choose one, I'd pick Kieran.

LoupsGarous · 03/10/2022 09:41

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 02/10/2022 09:17

I'm half Irish 😂

SylvanianFrenemies · 02/10/2022 09:35

Kieran.
If I met a child called "Keane" I'd assume the parents were crazy fans of the band.

Cian is not an alternative spelling, it is a different (and much nicer) name.

Shayisgreat · 02/10/2022 09:32

Both are nice if spelt Cian or Ciaran (or Ciarán if you want it to be stricly accurate) Prefer Ciaran as I sometimes think Cian is a bit drippy. Keane isn't a first name.

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 02/10/2022 09:28

*Sorry , typo! I meant one ENGLISH Keane, not British Keane. Got kids clambering all over me and not paying full attention, oops!

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 02/10/2022 09:26

LoupsGarous · 01/10/2022 23:17

The anti-Irish prejudice never really goes away on here.

Not only am I half Irish, but NONE of the Kieran's I know in England who I was referring to are Irish (or half Irish, or in any way Irish). It's not like the name isn't also massively common in England? As for Keane, I only know one British Keane and no Irish Keanes. It's not even a name, it's a surname?

Both names are a bit... well, I used to work in a really rough pub in my hometown in England and there were several Kierans and a Keane. They were all dodgy. The names seem connected to people like this if I'm honest - give me an image of drunken bar fights and cocaine.

largeprintagathachristie · 01/10/2022 23:14

Keane is a surname. Also the name of a band. Also you’ve got the keen/Keane issue.

it’s going to be mistaken for Kieran anyway so just go for that one.

Kite22 · 01/10/2022 23:04

loads of babes work as surnames and first names! Spencer, Harrison, Thomas, Jackson, Lee, Rex, Parker, James, Fletcher, Arthur

Well, that is a matter of opinion.
People ask for opinions on baby names threads.
Personally I don't like the names Spencer, Harrison, Jackson, Parker, or Fletcher either as I 'hear' them all as surnames. For me Thomas, James and Arthur are first names.
But as I say - just offering my opinion as asked for.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/10/2022 20:38

Kieran is ok, albeit a bit 90s dated, prefer the more authentic Ciaran spelling

Keane is stupid - are you Keen Keane?, are you keen on Keane?. See also bleaty public school band.

Maybe..

Corin
Caius
Cathal / Cahal
Colm
Caleb
Cillian
Cary

TheBirdintheCave · 01/10/2022 19:02

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads Etymologically, no, a lot of those you listed don't work as first names.

OP did you mean Cian (KEY-un)? If so, I prefer that to Ciaran.

caitlinrose · 01/10/2022 19:01

Kieran.

Keane sounds like "keen".

Kiera is on our list.

What about Cian (kee-an)?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/10/2022 18:41

Much prefer Ciaran/Kieran, but don't dislike Keane. DS(14) has several Cian/Kian/Keane peers.

Azandme · 01/10/2022 18:34

Kieran.

Keane is a band.

balalake · 01/10/2022 18:34

Kieran.

Keane reminds of that thug on a football field (Roy) or the bedwetting band.
