Sky and Skye

I would like to hear your thoughts on Sky and Skye.

Which spelling do you prefer?

Do you prefer it on a boy or girl? Does the spelling make a difference?

My husband likes Skyler and Skylar for girls. I can't really get on board with these two as they are too trendy for me personally but I do like just Skye for a girl and Sky for a boy (the former might end up on my list as for the latter I'm not quite sure).

What are your thoughts on:

Skye for a girl

Sky for a boy

Or maybe Sky for a girl (for some reason I can't imagine Skye on a boy as much).

I do like the simplicity of Sky but am sort of wondering whether Skye looks more grown up and professional?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Skye for a girl.

Sky is the sky.

Not a good name for a Blu.

Sandysandwich · 29/09/2022 15:12

Skye is nice for a girl, I wouldn't personally use any version for a boy.
I knew a woman called Skyla wich seemed softer than Skyler, but I think just Skye is nicer.

SiobhanSharpe · 29/09/2022 14:55

Not Skylar, please. Skye is.... ok, at a pinch.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 29/09/2022 14:52

It is a bit of a doggy name tbh.

RoyKent · 27/09/2022 22:38

I know a boy "Skye" too femine!

LadybirdsAreNeverHappy · 27/09/2022 22:33

When I hear it all I can think of is Paw Patrol.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/09/2022 22:29

I think they are all girls’ names these days aren’t they?! I wouldn’t use any more a bit

Sky/e is better than Skylar, but Skylar is fucking awful.

Skye was briefly a middle class hippy nature name, but like Summer has gone downmarket which is why the PP mentioned some people will see it as cxxxxy, although not as many as if you called her Skylar, that’s for sure.

ColonelCarter · 27/09/2022 22:07

Skye. For boy or girl

Penguinsaregreat · 27/09/2022 20:43

I think Skye like the island looks better. I think of Sky(e) from Mamma Mia too. I know a female Skye but where I live it’s not a common name.
I know one Skylar but I don’t like it.

Dreamingcats · 27/09/2022 20:34

I like both. I think of Skye for girls and Sky for boys (because of Mamma Mia and also Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, swoon).

MarmiteCoriander · 27/09/2022 20:32

Skye- like the island, even better if you have any Scottish connections. The word looks rounded and finished to me

Sky- I think more hippy and out there

I prefer both names for a girl.
I also like Brooke.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 27/09/2022 20:25

Definitely Skye, either gender. I've known one of each, neither were "downmarket". 😒 Personally I do prefer it on a girl but that's probably because I knew the female Skye first - actually as a kid in the 80s.

Sky just looks wrong.

MistressIggi · 27/09/2022 19:01

I suppose it is odd that some Scottish islands are boys names (Lewis, Harris) but Skye I've only heard for a girl.

BearWoman · 27/09/2022 18:52

Skye for a girl. Not a fan of Sky.

Sarahcoggles · 27/09/2022 18:48

I'm not a fan of either, but if you have to choose it then it would be Skye, and for a girl. But it's very trendy amongst people who are trying to be a bit "out there" and different. Only problem is there are loads of people trying to be different, and all end up choosing the same names.

Mrsjayy · 27/09/2022 18:31

And definitely a girls name.

Mrsjayy · 27/09/2022 18:30

Skye . I don't think sky looks right as a name.

Fwiw the woman who gave us mortgage advice recently was Skye so if course it is a "professional " name.

Grungeho · 27/09/2022 18:27

Skye is nice. Wouldn't call a boy skye though. Lovely girls name.

Also I don't think it's chavvy in the slightest 🤔

ladygindiva · 27/09/2022 17:56

Skye for a girl, like the beautiful place. I actually don't mind Skylar. Neither for a boy.

DariaMorgendorffer · 27/09/2022 17:30

I like Skye for a girl

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 27/09/2022 17:28

I'm taken back to Paw Patrol with Skye!

I don't know any human ones personally.

I'm not a fan of Skylar though. Not sure why.

TwoWeeksislong · 27/09/2022 17:15

I like Skye.

Titsflyingsouth · 27/09/2022 17:13

Not really my cup of tea to be honest, but I'd probably go with Skye (it reminds me of the Isle of Skye, which is absolutely beautiful and a very nice association....)

Audienceofone · 27/09/2022 15:58

Wow some people really getting worked up over some names here 😳😂

personally I prefer the spelling of Skye (for either gender because who cares about gendering names really) and skylar is nice also. If you like the name then go for it imo

BruceWaynettaSlob · 27/09/2022 15:51

caitlinrose · 27/09/2022 15:34

Is Skye seen as such a name? I always thought it had a sweet, nature-like image. What exactly makes it so?

Just curious and not just directed at you only but as a general question as it just never occured to me. Would be grateful if someone could explain. Thank you.

I definitely wouldn't want her to have problems with her name but always saw Skye as a pretty normal choice as it doesn't seem to be that uncommon.

Sorry op, I'm not sure why it's disliked. It's been called "down-market" on here.
I was just letting you know that there could be potential problems in future if your dd encounters snobs.
