Beautiful and very nearly used it for my second DD. I would have used Dora as a nickname not Thea. Opted for Florence last minute, but really do love Theodora

Kanaloa · 28/09/2022 14:07

Obviously I wasn’t saying Theodora is super popular - but Theo and Teddy (which might end up her day to day name) are both incredibly popular. I presumed it was important to you since you thought names like Nova/Dakota are ‘overdone’ so I thought that would be important to you.

It’s nice enough - I also like Theodosia! What would put me off is Theo/Teddy. Teddy has fallen out a bit lately but there’s still at least two (if not more) boys named Theo in every preschool class. It’s become a bit like Lily or Sophia or Oliver to me - a lovely name that’s just been so overused that I don’t really like it as much anymore.

I would say I don’t think that poster was saying it’s a made up/invented name. She was saying it ‘sounds made up’ or that it’s unfamiliar. Lots of names aren’t made up but could ‘sound made up’ because they’re unfamiliar.

I know what you mean about Theodore being ruined by it’s popularity and also disregarded it as a boys name for the same reason (although I do like the boys version a lot less)

I like it!

I just mention how popular it is because you mention other names as ‘overdone’ but to me any Theo name is overdone! I still like it but it’s so so popular for boys so sounds overdone to me.

Theodora is listed as 364th so I’m happy with how used it it - it’s less common than all of my other children’s names so I don’t mind this. I’d be worried about something in the top 10 or even too 50 but at 364 I’m not worried 😊

As for nicknames, I love all the nicknames! And we are abroad so its not at all popular here 😁

Beautiful name

I like the shortened teddy when they are young

Thing is op, it's not what everyone thinks that you care about, is it? It's what the people in your 'tribe' think about it. And it's obvious from the comments on here who's in your tribe and who isn't.
It's great to hear a proper grown up, elegant, historic name with some sort of meaning, rather than just being random syllables. Go for it. It's lovely.

I actually entirely know what you mean and agree. I was thinking about this today actually, so it’s funny that you posted this, such a coincidence!

To be honest, I did an ‘advanced search’ on a poster on this thread who hated the name Theodora and was rude about it to see whether I actually valued her opinion.

Turns out she had recently posted a thread, and when I saw the names that she described as lovely, I realised that her taste in names was ENTIRELY different to mine - her names were all a bit… well, to put it nicely I’d say a bit modern and overdone and nothing-ey. Things like ‘Dakota’ and ‘Nova’ which I just dislike and I know that none of my friends and family (the people whose opinions I care about when naming my baby) would like these names either.

So honestly based on this I just disregarded her opinion because she’s clearly just got a really different taste to me and so her opinion isn’t very helpful.

On the other hand, if the poster who hated Theodora had said they’d liked other names that I’m fond of - classic names, or names with a strong history, like you said - then I’d have maybe thought twice about the name as I’d probably have valued their opinion more as it would make me think that we perhaps had more in common her her opinion might reflect my friend’s and family’s.

As it stands, when I saw her name list I thought I was quite glad she didn’t like Theodora because the names on her list were definitely not the vibe I was going for and so it might have put me off using it 😳

It sounds awful and snobby now I write it down but I don’t mean it to. I suppose what I’m trying to say is just that I agree with you. There are people who we think we have something in common with and so we value their opinion, and there are other people who just have nothing in common with us at all/like stuff we really dislike, and so we naturally sort of shrug off their opinion.

Absolutely beautiful, it might even make my list 🙂 Sounds very pretty and has many options for shortening.

Like an earlier poster said, go with what suits your family and your circle of friends.

In my opinion saying that British people are 'attuned to class signifiers' is one heck of an understatement. 'Obsessed with class signifiers' would be more accurate. Hopefully one day you'll manage to move past it.

Bideshi · 28/09/2022 12:59

Well, if that was the case, she wouldn't have asked for opinions here, possibly? At my stage in life I don't care what anyone thinks of anything I do, but when I was younger there were people whose opinions I respected and people whose opinions I didn't give flying fuck about. The divisions are as obvious on MN as anywhere else. We're British. We are attuned to class signifiers. It's disingenuous to argue otherwise.

I'm not sure I understand your 'tribe' logic. She shouldn't worry about what everyone thinks but she should worry about what her 'tribe' thinks? People on MN who like the name are part of her tribe but people she may know and like in real life who dislike the name (and hopefully keep that thought to themselves) are not part of her tribe?

Surely the only thing that really matters is that she and her partner like the name.

Love it!

Grungeho · 27/09/2022 17:35

My best friend was called Theodora, never really liked it and neither did she. Kids made fun of it at school but tbh kids are cruel anyway. She changed her name before college and is now called Hayley.

Titsflyingsouth · 27/09/2022 17:15

Too much for me tbh. Too many syllables.

TooManyMoronsHere · 27/09/2022 15:31

@eleanorsmellstrop haha sorry!

It was a children's programme in the 90's. This was the theme tune:

scarletisjustred · 27/09/2022 15:25

I think the name is very pretty.

😂😂😂 I’ve never heard of this but I’m obsessed!

We don’t live in an English speaking country so I doubt anyone we know will have heard of this though.

although now you mention it I might add Wizardora to the list 😁

I really don’t like it sorry, it makes me cringe a bit. Plus there are already so many Theo and Theodore’s about, it kind of just blends into those for me.

I probably should have mentioned previously that we don’t live in the UK and Theodore isn’t a popular name here at all - it literally doesn’t exist in the local language which gets rid of that issue for us.

There's a Theodora at nursery, her nickname is Tick.
Which gives me the creeps.

Ohh gosh yeah. Tick isn’t great is it! Of all the lovely nicknames for Theodora, I wonder how they settled on Tick? Maybe it’s one of those names that an older sibling can’t pronounce and makes up a weird nickname and then it sticks? I had a friend who ended up with the nickname ‘Stub’ this way 😄
