I love the girls names Georgiana pronounced George - ee - ar - nah I know a lot of people say George - Jay - Nah due to the film with Keira Knightly. I know some people believe this the true pronunciation and others say it was an affection nickname used by very few and one being the Duchess. I only like the first pronunciation (like in bbc pride & prejudice) I know there is no other way I can spell it. What do you think? Do you think it would get often mispronounced or not? Does it matter? Curious what thoughts are. My other name i’m considering is Eliana. thanks!

Does it? Can someone explain where the r comes from? There's not an r in the name.

I'd pronounce it George- ee-anna, like others have said. I'm Scottish and I've never heard it with an r. Is this regional do you think? We're very fond of our rs up here, so I'd have thought we'd put one in if others do!😆

Because Putting an R into the name Georgianna doesn't sound nice to my ears. I don't think people are writing R and actually wanting an R sound.

Also - for the naysayers. Lana is pronounced larna not lanna. It's like that. Fairly common in English pronunciation for a double n to be needed to turn a long vowel sound into a short vowel sound.

I'd pronounce it like you OP and I love it. Go for it. I have a name that everyone mispronounces but I wouldn't change it. The people who matter get it right.

Georgiana isn’t the same as Georgie-Anna. That would be Georgianna. Names that’s end in Ana have a different pronunciation to Anna.

Why not Georgina? That's a beautiful name and doesn't have any confusion over pronunciation. She can then be Georgie (lovely) or Gina or George - whatever she or you prefer.

It's one of my favourite girl's names. (Love Georgia too.)

It can’t be Georgie-anna, because it ends in ana, not anna, which is a different sound altogether. People write Georgie-ar-na, whereas perhaps Georgie-ah-na is better understood. They sound exactly the same to many people, depending on your accent.

I'm one of them and I'm Georgie but often people call me Gregory 🤣🤣

Often people can't spell or say my name but I still love it and I'm glad I've got it in a generation of boring samey names

The vast majority of people will say it the way you want.

As far as I know the Geor-jay-nah pronunciation was invented by the Duchess of D’s inner circle as a clique-y affectation.

I don’t think it will get confused with Georgina much, because that’s pretty unusual now.

I like it much better than Eliana which I think is quite Disney princess sounding and also the world doesn’t need any more Ella/Ellies

Plus, the name getting mistaken for Georgina doesn’t offend me as it’s still a lovely name so I think I don’t really worry about that :)
I know a lot of people find it too long or fussy but I like long names so I guess it’s preference and there are so many names I hear that aren’t to my taste either.
I like that’s it’s long and it sounds lovely when said in full but also has many options to be shortened, which also sound lovely - imo of course :)

Yes it will get mispronounced, but I'd guess more people will read it as Georgina than pronounce it as Geor-jay-nah, but I don't think it's a massive deal either way. Even the simplest of names get misspelled and mispronounced. Few names are immune so go for the name you love.

Love Georgie for short. Reminds me of 60s-tastic Georgy Girl song by The Seekers.

As someone else has mentioned the difference in pronunciation between Hans and ana is regional. Southerners etc who favour the “dark A” or ah sound will use the OP’s preferred pronunciation (RP).
Thus most names containing the ana or Anna element will in other area of the UK tend to have the alternative pronunciation. No right or wrong really but stick to your own preferred version.

@MsSnow for what it’s worth, I don’t think there’s a big issue with having a name that requires spelling/correcting. It’s sometimes leads to people remembering you better and it’s a conversation starter too. People like to engage when you have an unusual ish name in my experience, and I think it builds confidence when you’re little. I have one that’s somewhat unusual and I’ve notice people seem to like having something to say about it. It tends to lead to a few extra seconds of friendly conversation in a way that being called “Ann” doesn’t seem to. Worst case scenario- she ends up going by Georgie all the time and most people can manage that.
