@1user , I'd look up Oleander before using it as a name.

Are you a Buffy fan OP? I like both TBH but would prefer Xander.

Haha no I'm not. But perhaps I should be if both names are in Buffy!

I prefer Eli, either as a nickname or short for Elias, Elliott or Elijah. I like Xander, but not Zander, but prefer it as a nickname for Alexander.

Just throwing out another option, that might be similar to Eli or Zander.... Oleander?

Ooo not heard of Oleander before. Think I prefer Lysander though

@1user Leander is also similar, I prefer that to Lysander

Ah yes I have seen Leander but seems feminine Leanne - der.

Thanks!

I don't like Eli at all, and definitely not as a short form of Elias or Elijah.

Zander is too fishy

How about Lysander?
I like Xander as a nickname to Alexander. Eli is ok, but I agree is better as a nickname than standalone.

This is a good alternative. I know one Lysander and hadn't even thought of it.

Eli

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 17/09/2022 21:10

Eli is a fab name. Never crossed my mind that is a Nick name. Strong and kind in my opinion.

Algor1thm · 17/09/2022 19:44

Eli all the way! I like it short for Elias.

Ribeebie · 17/09/2022 18:56

I have both for my DC but they are nicknames. They are officially Alexander & Elijah. And we spell Xander with an X. I was amazed at how many people write it with a Z though!

Out of Eli & Zander with a Z - I would go for Eli.

Xander is so common these days. Which is fine, of course (my DC all have popular names).

I know a few Elliot's but not many Eli's.

I'm in the Uk and don't think Zander is popular here but Eli or other names where Eli comes from are popular

Eli. Zander is awful.

Xander

Erictheavocado · 17/09/2022 17:52

Zander for me.
FWIW I know a lovely Zander. He is part South African and I understand it is from that side of his family. He is in a professional career and there has never been any indication that his name has held him back in any way.

I love Elijah. Not what you want to hear of course! Zander will always be a character from Buffy to me, but that finished 20 years ago, so doubt any kids would even know what it was.

Haha my cousin said this yesterday and I have never seen buffy

X/Zander - do you pronounce it zarn-der or Zann-der?

Zan-der

I hate Zander/Xander, it just seems too try hard and trite.
