Meredith or Edith?

Which do you prefer out of Meredith and Edith? I think I'm more swaying towards Edith but the more I see Meredith, the more I like it, and I suppose it has more nickname/shortenings options!

I have a Meredith. She's now 18 at uni and she most definitely it's cutesy.

She's a strong, confident woman who takes no rubbish.

She often uses nicknames and has always used Merry as her preferred name.

So obviously you know where my vote goes.

Meredith is gorgeous.
To me Edina is sweeter/less gutteral than Edith

Edith and Martha are both beautiful. I am biased as I have an awesome Martha. I can lend you my MN Martha Bingo card for the people who will shortly arrive to tell you that it’s dumpy / puddingy / drudgey / the name of a Victorian servant Grin

Grin I do absolutely adore Martha. The only reason it's not top top spot on the list is because DH's sister is called Martha and I'm not sure if that will be weird/complicated. I think we've decided we will 'know' if it feels weird or right once baby is here

I really like Edith and Martha. I am not fond of Meredith

FayeSW · 23/09/2022 20:34

I have Meredith nn Meri. She's in her teens now and still love it. I do love Edith too though.

schoolsoutforever · 22/09/2022 20:55

Prefer Edith. For some reason I’m just not very keen on Meredith. Like Edie or Eddie nn

SquigglePigs · 21/09/2022 17:40

I love Meredith! Sadly my DH vetoed it for our DD.

I still see Edith as a very old name (two in my family who would be late 90's if they were still with us) but I have heard a couple of younger people with it so it is getting a bit of a revival. And it's kinda sweet.

Having said that I prefer Edie as a nickname to Mer/Mere...

I'd still choose Meredith out of the two though.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 21/09/2022 17:36

Edith.

Meredith is beautiful, but it’s a boy’s name to me.

CammieKennaway · 21/09/2022 17:28

I think Meredith is beautiful. I do like Edith but Meredith seems to suit young and old x

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/09/2022 17:11

I love the name Edith. And the nn Edie

I worked with a right cow called Meredith which really put me off the name

Spidey66 · 21/09/2022 17:10

Edith nn Edie

HairOclock · 21/09/2022 17:08

Thank you for all your thoughts! I thought Edith would be preferred over Meredith a lot more so very interesting! I think my gut still loves Edith more though which this thread has helped me see Smile torn between that and Martha now but we will decide once baby is here I think!

Meredith is a lovely name

Edith by a mile for me. Meredith and Merry both sound quite 'drippy' (can't think of a better word, sorry) to me. Edith sounds more assertive and adult. Edie is a nice nn.

Interesting how names sound different to different people! I think Meredith sounds stronger than Edith.

EdgeOfACoin · 18/09/2022 06:51

I dislike the name Edith but like Edie as a nickname.

I really like Meredith.

DramaAlpaca · 17/09/2022 23:49

I prefer Edith of the two.

Someone upthread described Edith as vintage and Meredith as middle aged, and that's my perception too.

Snugglemonkey · 17/09/2022 23:10

I like Edith much better.

megosaurusrex · 17/09/2022 23:07

Don't like Meredith at all, and just reminds me of the character from the US Office.

Edith is a bit vintage but I like it.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2022 13:45

I love both.
I'm Welsh and would say
Mer-ED-ith. I think English people would say MER-ed-ith

FayCarew · 17/09/2022 12:48

Yes, Meredith is an anglicised Welsh boy's name, Meredydd, which is Merr-ED-ith (ith like in 'with')

FayCarew · 17/09/2022 12:46

Meredith is horrible. Nice surname though.

Edith is much better. Edie is quite nice
