Short Irish Boys names - suggestions?

Daydreaming about boys names - Irish but living in Scotland with the possibility of moving back in a few years. Have a Conall already

Like but don’t love:
Dara
Aodh
Eoin/Eoghan
Brian (wouldn’t use it outside of Ireland I don’t think)
Shay

Does anyone have any suggestions we could add to the list? Preferably short names I think

Hi. Lots of Liams where I live. Love Enda

I am Irish, living in England and have a Shay (nn for Seamus). We chose it as it was a name that was common enough that he wouldn’t have to spell it every time. I loved names like Diarmuid but know that would be tricky in England.

He is 10 and is the only Shay in his school. Only 3 other Seamuses in our town (of about 15,000). So, manageable, but not too common.

would you think about Dermot? Easy for people in UK but good strong name.

Some good names here.

mathanxiety · 20/09/2022 04:36

TADHG is correct spelling.

There is no correct alternative. Everything else is wrong.

It is not Tadgh or Thagdh or any other variation.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 19/09/2022 23:11

I like Ferdia and Ultan as they're easily pronounced outside of Ireland.

JenniferBarkley · 19/09/2022 08:58

I was coming on to say Cormac and Lorcan. I babysat twins with those names and they've always stuck in my head. Travel well too.

Ladyofthelake53 · 19/09/2022 08:43

Colm ?

Ladyofthelake53 · 19/09/2022 08:41

I like Seamus also Flynn

Art
Donn
Dennis
Flann

Loving Séamas pronounced Shem-us.
His sister Erin gets called Errrrrn.
His wee bro'r Aidan known as Eedun.

Greenlee · 16/09/2022 00:22

Pádraic?

abiirthdaycake · 15/09/2022 15:34

Big fan of Art here.

If you go for Tadhg definitely be sure to put the h in the right place - even on this thread too many people are spelling it wrong so that might give you an indication of how much trouble you'd have with it irl. I don't think it sounds like taig though, none of the Tadhgs I've known have had the piss taken out of them for that as far as I know

Depends on the accent, I wouldn't pronounce Seamus as Shay-mus I'd pronounce it as Shem-us.

If going for Shea spell it as Shea not Shay.

I think that's a mispronunciation rather than an accent thing? There's an 'ay' sound in Séamus, like in hay or may.

BellaCiao1 · 15/09/2022 14:30

Chiliprepper · 15/09/2022 10:12

What do people think of Shay? Would you automatically think short for Seamus? DH thinks that would be the assumption in the UK anyway

MadeInChorley · 15/09/2022 12:58

Colm
Enda

WinifridSanderson · 15/09/2022 12:53

Seàn - classic!
Love Tadgh and Liam too. I would say Conor but too close to Connell.

Chiliprepper · 15/09/2022 12:48

Oh thanks I’m glad I posted. really like Enda but have never known any so still automatically think Kenny. Like Niall too and think it probably travels better than a lot of my other faves (Donnacha, Daithi)

Have Cillian, Cian and Cormacs in close friends/family, also Aidans and a Rory.

Good point about Oran in Scotland too!

Flynn (not sure if Irish, but lovely)

Chavvy is not a word I care for, but for want of a better one I’d say Shay sounds a bit chavvy.

Shay a girls name? I live in Ireland and I honestly have never heard a girl called Shay.

Also I wouldn’t class it chavvy.
