Firstname starting with same letter as surname?

The name we like starts with the same letter as our surname, we really like the name but we're a bit worried about how it will sound beginning with the same letter, any opinions on whether it works or not? Thank you

I specifically looked for a name for our baby that started with the same letter as our surname. I love alliterative names!

Onceuponatimethen · 23/09/2022 21:02

I tend to avoid

SkyeBlue28 · 23/09/2022 20:59

I like it in general but I think it depends on the name. My surname begins with B so I felt any B names sounded clumsy, also because the surname is a but if a mouthful by itself.
Most times I have heard it I think it works.

My husband’s initials are DD (with A thrown in the middle). I’ve always hated it, it’s clumsy somehow and put me off alliterative names. Plus what happens if your child has a lisp or speech impediment and you’ve called them Susie Styles (cringe)

I'd say it's not a big deal for one child but don't create a whole dynasty of them.

Matthew Martin - Mrs and Mrs Martin just happened to like the name Matthew.

Matthew, Maureen, Michael, Monica, Montague and Maria Martin - Mr and Mrs Martin probably didn't like all those names as much as the first two or three, but felt they couldn't stop now.

It depends on the initials and the sound of the letters.
You could be like Keira Knightley, and have a name like Thea Thompson, William Wright, or Catherine Charlton.

i know two CC's, one BB and one TT and one HH. They rarely notice it at all. go for it

TheTeddyBears · 14/09/2022 16:34

I have same initial and surname and still after marrying and taking his name it's still the same. Sounds gd together. It wouldn't even cross my mind not to pick a name because of this. Different if it rhymes then maybe not but I don't see the issue.

Robinsonsquashedme · 14/09/2022 10:52

My married name is like this. A lot of people call me by my initials as well. I quite like it.

JenniferBarkley · 14/09/2022 10:51

My DD2's name is highly alliterative (first name, middle name and both syllables of surname), I think it sounds nice. In some cases it can be a bit sing-songy but in most cases I think alliterative names sound lovely.

LT2 · 14/09/2022 10:48

Until this thread it's never occurred to me how many people I know with the same letter surnames to forenames! Mostly married surnames. They sound fine. Nothing wrong with it.

Peccary · 14/09/2022 10:30

I like alliterative names as long as there isn't too much (multiple repeated sounds)

I have always love Carmen for example but my surname is a bit like Coleman so ruled it out but Carmen Cook sounds fine to me

JaninaDuszejko · 13/09/2022 22:56

My name is alliterative, I like it and no-one has ever said anything horrible about it. I also know several people in real life with alliterative names so it's not just celebrities and comic book characters.

January Jones, Holly Hunter, Danny Devito, Farrah Fawcett.

BlueThingie · 13/09/2022 22:48

My name is like this and I love it.

Goldenboysmum · 13/09/2022 22:44

My name is like this, lots of people just refer to me by my initials, along the lines of CC

Snugglemonkey · 13/09/2022 22:38

I like . I am pregnant and my DC's first name and surname start with the same letter. They go very well together.

knackeredagain · 13/09/2022 22:33

I do love an alliterative name. It wouldn’t put me off at all.

Sandysandwich · 13/09/2022 22:33

It really depends on the names but it is probably fine. It might not work if the sounds are the same as well as the letter
So Freya Frayne sounds weirder than Felicity Frayne

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 13/09/2022 22:32

Usually it’s great, occasionally it doesn’t work when it’s just too matchy:

  • Tilly Townsend - fine
  • Tilly Tinny- not fine

Nellodee · 13/09/2022 22:03

Who doesn’t want to be a superhero’s secret alter ego?

😂

I just came on to say it’s a bit Marvel Comics. You know, Jessica Jones, Bucky Barnes, Pepper Potts, Matt Murdock, J Jonah Jameson, Bruce Banner, Steven Strange, Peter Parker, and so on and so forth. It makes me think of comics.

But I do think some are worse than others. Depends on the overall sound - some are okay.

MothershipG · 13/09/2022 22:28

Depends on the names but works well for my DS, his initials are GG.

Benjispruce4 · 13/09/2022 22:26

I live a bit of alliteration. Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo anyone?

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/09/2022 22:23

Lots do work well, it can be very (as your granny would say) catchy.

23Elfie · 13/09/2022 22:15

My first and surname start with the same letter 🤷‍♀️not married, this is the name my parents gave me - go for it x

perenniallymessy · 13/09/2022 22:13

I don't think it's that bad. The only worry is that if the initial letter is one that people commonly struggle with (like S or R), then if they turn out to have that particular speech impediment then it could be quite difficult for them.
