Clemency

Thoughts on Clemency as a sister to Jemima, Tabitha and Reuben? Would probably use nickname Cece rather than Clem/mie, but like both!

Also, middle name ideas?

Clemency = death row to me

Mammyloveswine · 17/09/2022 10:36

Oh god..when I first met my now DH he had a girlfriend called Clemency and I remember thinking what a hideous name! She was also a stuck up bitch so I may be biased!

Clem just sounds urgh..there are so many beautiful baby girls names!

@jrt2022

The context of the criminal justice system in the US is very well known. It's a very relevant context even outside of the US because the death penalty is infamous world wide.

What about Cadence?
Or if you really love "virtue" names:
Chastity
Constance
Verity
Amity
Charity
Temperance

Love Constance but DH said no and Amity is cute but reminds me of the horror film 😭

Clemency meaning- "Clemency is the process by which a governor, president, or administrative board may reduce a defendant's sentence or grant a pardon."

Do you really want a name that is linked to a prison sentence/crime/criminal?

Thats so funny to me. Names arent soley based on how the word sounds to say you also need to consider their meaning.

well it’s so funny to me that you think the word ‘Clemency’ only has meaning within the American criminal justice system 🙄

Yes it is and imo a pretty one.

Op I don't mind Clemency. But I think you will get Clem and Clemmi as a nm. Is that a worry?

I do love Temperance but it's a big name.to carry.

Imagine embarking on freshers' week with a name like Temperance.

DogInATent · 16/09/2022 09:23

Virtue names always remind me of Pratchett..

"The Carter parents were a quiet and respectable Lancre family who got into a bit of a mix-up when it came to naming their children. First, they had four daughters, who were christened Hope, Chastity, Prudence, and Charity, because naming girls after virtues is an ancient and unremarkable tradition. Then their first son was born and out of some misplaced idea about how this naming business was done he was called Anger Carter, followed later by Jealousy Carter, Bestiality Carter and Covetousness Carter. Life being what it is, Hope turned out to be a depressive, Chastity was enjoying life as a lady of negotiable affection in Ankh-Morpork, Prudence had thirteen children, and Charity expected to get a dollar’s change out of seventy-five pence–whereas the boys had grown into amiable, well-tempered men, and Bestiality Carter was, for example, very kind to animals."

How bout 'Kasia' or 'Kezia' as a sister's name to Tabitha and Jemima? Or 'Dinah Rose' or 'Asher Grace' as Reuben's sister.

I really love Clemency, much more than any of the other Clem names. Makes me think of Youth and Age on Beaulieu River.

MN always brings up the death row thing but I know a few Clemencys IRL and have never thought of that.

Clemency the General's daughter

I love it. Very Chalet school.

mathanxiety · 15/09/2022 16:55

@Snowiscold

People mention death row because granting clemency is the official procedure for a state to show mercy or leniency to a condemned prisoner.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 15/09/2022 11:25

I love Clemency, and Clement for a boy.

Snowiscold · 15/09/2022 07:49

I don’t know why people are going on about death row. The dictionary meaning - Collins - has two meanings, and both are nice:

  1. mercy or leniency
2. mildness, esp of the weather”
Snowiscold · 15/09/2022 07:44

I like Clemency much more than Clementine. I really dislike Clemmie and Clem, though, and that might be enough to put me off. I can’t decide if it goes with your other DC names, though, which are all OT and Clemency isn’t. But it does have a Puritan vibe, which does fit the other names.

Beentheredunnthat · 15/09/2022 07:06

I like Clemency because of the religious aspect, I think Clementine loses that? And Clementine has also got very popular in my hometown lately. I know 3 under 3 which isn't loads, but also always seeing it on name boards and considering how rare it was before makes me worry it might date badly.

Clementine is the female version of Pope Clement. Arguably more religious therefore than Clemency.

I love Clementine - pronounces the English way rather than the American way though.

INXS21 · 11/09/2022 18:49

It’s lovely, also Clementine. I was at school with a Clementina, which is also think is very nice. She was known as Tina, rather than Clem or Clemmie.

StellaOlivetti · 11/09/2022 18:46

I love it!

timeonhands · 11/09/2022 18:42

Clements?

obsessedwithsleep · 11/09/2022 18:27

Clemency is beautiful. I think a single syllable middle name like Rose.

amylou8 · 11/09/2022 17:26

Sorry it makes me think of someone on death row. Clearly I've been watching too much Netflix.

JustMaggie · 11/09/2022 17:20

Clemency is WAY NICER than Clementine.
