Can’t pick a girls name!

SGChome20 · 06/09/2022 20:08

I’m due in a couple of weeks and we can’t decide on a girls name. We have a boys name picked out already which likely means I’m having a girl!

names we like so far are:

Emma - worry it’s a bit bland
Rachael
Martha
Melissa - don’t really want it shortened to Mel

I also like Darcy, Megan and Erin but DH doesn’t like them. I liked Victoria but was out off by it likely being shortened to Vicki. I don’t like anything that sounds like a nickname and I’m not keen on names ending ie but wouldn’t rule it out completely. I don’t really want anything too popular but equally nothing too out there either. We already have a Grace and at the time I didn’t realise quite how popular it was but I do like her name and she really has become her name.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Emma is beautiful!

ThatshallotBaby · 13/09/2022 10:34

I think Emma is such a lovely name. I also like Anna very much.

Fivebeanchilli · 13/09/2022 10:23

Emma - I don't think it's bland at all. I think it's less bland than, say, Emily. All the Emmas I know are very strong people though so maybe that influences
Rachael - this I do find a bit dull. If I met a Grace and Rachael sibset I'd assume the parents were very religious
Martha - I love this and think it's gorgeous (and, despite its being biblical, I wouldn't have the same feelings as with Rachael! Grace and Martha is lovely
Melissa - very 70s. I'm not sure it's ready for a revival yet...

I don't like your other choices to be honest.
I would go for Martha or Emma.

Emma is lovely and goes well with Grace - not many around either!
Martha also good.

similar in vibe:
Zara
Anna
Lydia
Maria
Cara

wildcard: Juliette

I love Camilla too, but might be a bit odd timing at the moment!

Margot? I love this name but my partner didn't agree unfortunately. Don't worry too much if you don't have a name in place. We took two weeks to decide for our second little girl and it wasn't one of the names we had in mind as they just didn't suit her. She's now Roxy. Her big sister is Ivy.

Elowen is really nice and not one I’ve come across. I liked Elsbeth as well but DH didn’t.

Just as a heads up (as most people get it wrong) this is a Cornish name pronounced 'el-OH-en' and not 'ELO-wen' :)

Elise is an attractive variant.

catandcoffee · 08/09/2022 22:26

Zara.... you cant really shorten it.

HarleySq · 08/09/2022 22:23

Eliza?

SGChome20 · 08/09/2022 19:59

@HarleySq i actually always have liked the name Elizabeth and I’m sure it may have a resurgence now. I was just put off by Lizzy, Betty, Liz shortenings.

Elizabeth would be quite pertinent.

bloominglovelyorange · 08/09/2022 13:47

Emma is such a nice classic and beautiful name

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 08/09/2022 13:42

Emma and Rachael are beautiful. Also second Hannah, suggested upthread.

Melissa is also lovely, but don't use it if you don't like Mel - she will definitely be called that at some point in her life!

RosieRoww · 08/09/2022 12:55

Emma is a nice name, not bland, op.:)

StarlingsInTheRoof · 08/09/2022 12:53

I have been on holiday to a few countries with an Emma and it was easy for people from all the different languages to pronounce. Definitely a plus point in global society.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 08/09/2022 12:34

Emma and Rachael are dull, dull, dull. Avoid! I do like Martha. Cassia would be nice.

minticecreamisjustok · 08/09/2022 12:33

Emma is nice but if it's too bland, what about Emilia or Emily.
