DC 4 on the way!

I already have 3 DS named
Barnaby James
Montgomery Jude
Benedict (Ned) Michael

Me and DP are struggling with names for our next DC (we don’t know the gender yet and will be keeping it as a surprise till birth)
We have a short list for both genders but we are not 100% on any of our boy names
(Loads of people have said how our dc names have a slightly pretentious feel about them and we do slightly agree to be honest but all the other children at our dc school have names similar like Cosmo and Jago)

boys:
Hugo
Titus
Alfred
Fraser (my favourite)

girls:
Margot
Xanthe
Belle

Me and dp have been talking and he has got two new names that he wants to put on the list and they are Atticus and Lennox
i don’t know how well they fit with our other childrens names but I do love the idea of Lenny as a nickname for Lennox (Leonard wont work)

I don't think that your name options really 'go' with your current children's names (except Alfred which I don't love. It's a bit dull in comparison to your other children's names). I think you need something old and long with a nickname potential. Something like:

  • Augustine/Augustus (nn Gus)
  • Maximilian (nn Max)
  • Cassian/Caspian/Cassius (nn Cass)
  • Phinneas (nn Phin)
  • Alexander (nn Xander)
  • Nathaniel (nn Nate)
  • Albert (nn Bertie)
  • Laurence (nn Laurie)
  • Wilfred (nn Wilf/Fred)
  • Leopold (nn Leo)
Or for girls:
  • Beatrice/Beatrix (nn Bea)
  • Josephine (nn Josie/Posey/Effie)
  • Jemima (nn Mimi/Minnie)
  • Hermione (same nicknames as Jemima)
  • Katherine (nn Kitty)
  • Elizabeth (nn Betsy/Lizzie/Eliza etc)
  • Seraphina (nn Sephy)
  • Evangeline (nn Lena)
  • Tabitha (nn Tabby/Tibby/Tiggy)
  • Cecily/Cecilia (nn Cece)
  • Winifred (nn Winnie)
  • Susannah (nn Sukey)
  • Constance (nn Connie)

I do like Margot, Hugo and Titus but I think they'd sound odd with your other children's names, as they have a different 'feel' and while that only matters for a short time, it still matters for a short time.

I don't like Fraser (like a pp said, it's got a 'downmarket' vibe in my hometown) and Xanthe is just a bit 'meh' to me. Belle is done to death and terribly dull now, especially next to your other children's more interesting names. I think I'd feel short changed to be a Belle.

Hugo and Margot from your List.

Frieda
Daphne

Raymond
Alpheus
Francis

Purpleavocado · 31/08/2022 12:44

I like your boys names other than Titus. I think Sebastian would go well.

I agree with most of others about your girls names. My suggestions are
Harriet / Henrietta
Arabella
Hermione / Helena
Diana
Elouisa
Clara
Maud
Romilly

Lovelyflower · 31/08/2022 12:37

@pinklavenders not to keen on Theodora but do love the name Thea but my brother has already got a Sophia-Marigold and a Quinten-Octavious so I don’t think that would be able to work with Sophia

@Caspianberg we have considered another m name like Margot and Maximus but am worried it will become a bit of a tongue twister hahaha
And also Benedict gets called Ned 99% of the time

Frederick
Valentine
Marius
Lucius

Mabel
Lucina
Helena
Polina
Matilda
Rebecca
Anastasia

metellaestinatrio · 31/08/2022 07:02

I have a Barnaby, and other boy names we considered were:

Alexander
Sebastian
Rory (sounds as though that wouldn’t work for you)
Max (Maximilian)

I think Hugo goes best with your other names. Congratulations!

Caspianberg · 31/08/2022 06:54

I would go with M so you have BMBM

Merlin
Maxwell
Magnus

Meredith
Maeve
Marion
Margaret/ Maggie/ Margot

AdriannaP · 31/08/2022 06:50

I love your boys names!!

not keen on Fraser, I think Hugo, Albert (nn Bertie) or Rupert would go well.

Ottie is the name of Zoella’s baby so maybe expect more in the future. Don’t like Belle, doesn’t go with your boys. How about Isadora (nn Isa or Dora) or Seraphina. Also like Clementine or Celeste.

pinklavenders · 31/08/2022 06:43

Barnaby, Montgomery, Benedict and

Theodore
Quentin
Caspar

Theodora
Arabella
Valentina

Cindie943811A · 30/08/2022 22:45

Amabell / Amabelle is another variant of a Belle name

For a boy what about
Clovis
Ptolemy

Lovelyflower · 30/08/2022 22:19

I have always loved Theodore and Edison but with Benedict’s nickname of Ned I don’t think this is possible

OP posts:
Lovelyflower · 30/08/2022 22:08

@Hobbesmanc yes Montgomery gets called monty by all close friends and family - schools and doctors are the only places he gets called the full Montgomery and same goes for Barnaby with Barney
i have always loved Rafferty and Raphael with the nickname Raffy but DP has a slight speech impediment and finds it hard to pronounce his R’s and W’s so names like that are pretty much out of the question unfortunately
i also love Ottilie with the nickname Ottie!

Alfred and Margot are lovely

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/08/2022 21:38

I don't like any of your boys names, sorry. Fraser in my area is seen as downmarket rather than pretentious

Have you considered...

Jeffrey
Jeremiah
Sebastian
Humphrey
Augustus
Matthias
Lucian

Hobbesmanc · 30/08/2022 21:37

What about Raphael. Great shortened to Raffi. Gabriel works tooOr maybe Felix or Casper. I love your boy choices. Does Montgomery get Monty. So cute.

I'm not sure Bella or Xanthe are great fits with those choices. Margot is lovely also Marguerite. Clemence, Celeste. Daphne. Ottilie are feminine but not too frilly. What about Dorothea or Clarice. Quirky but not outlandish.

I like Fraser, but think Hugo goes better with your other names. Margot also goes well, though I like Xanthe too. I don't like Bella at all.

RelaxHaveADrinkWithMe · 30/08/2022 20:53

Like all the boys names except Titus. Sounds like an alsatian's name... (Sorry).

What about Ludovic, Gregory, Dominic, Francis?

Not keen on Xanthe. Belle is nice as a nn for Isabel, Mirabel, Annabelle or Arabella (my favourite).

What about Beth? Short for Elizabeth, or Bethany.

Congratulations!

RuthW · 30/08/2022 20:44

You boys' names are lovely

Xanthe goes but any Belle name is too ordinary.

The only boys name that's not ordinary is Titus but I'd be worried about Tit as a nn.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 30/08/2022 20:10

I like Hugo and Margot best with your other chidren's names, although I do like Xanthe as well.

It's possibly a bit "much", but what about Mirabel/Mirabelle as a full name for Belle? Granted, it is a variety of plum, but also a legitimate name with a long history in English and French but not very common now.

Lovelyflower · 30/08/2022 20:10

@WaltzingWaters Alfred will definitely go by Freddie or Alfie we just don’t know yet

OP posts:
WaltzingWaters · 30/08/2022 19:51

Hugo or Alfie (nn, don’t like Alfred at all but Alfie is cute.
Margot

NuffSaidSam · 30/08/2022 19:50

Not keen on Titus, but the other three boys name are all in keeping with your other DC names and all perfectly fine names.

I love Margot. I like Xanthe. Not keen on Belle, it feels a bit short and plain in comparison to her siblings. Maybe a Clarabelle or Annabelle or Isabelle and Belle as a nn? Also, too many B names with a Belle as well.
