Edith or Edie/Eadie?

Due in 4 weeks and we have no name! The only name me and DH keep coming back to is Edith/Edie. We both love Edie but not sure if we should officially name her Edith on the birth certificate so that she has more options as Edie sounds quite nicknamey to me? Would you name your daughter Edith or Edie?

A friend suggested just calling her Edie but spelling it “Eadie” so people don’t think her name is pronounced like Eddie. But I think Eadie looks really strange?

Any thoughts please?

As is Eden, and Ede.

LovinglifeAF · 26/08/2022 18:29

Eadie is a surname

MerryChristmasToYou · 26/08/2022 18:29

As long as it doesn't get shortened to Ede.

TedsaidFred · 26/08/2022 18:28

Definitely not Eadie!!
People know Edie is Ee-dee.

edebedeboo · 26/08/2022 18:03

I know, doesn't really make sense! But works for us!

MerryChristmasToYou · 26/08/2022 18:01

But Eden and Edie are the same length. Confused

edebedeboo · 26/08/2022 17:39

Great choice as it's my little ones name! Eden, with Edie for short Smile

WishDragon · 26/08/2022 17:32

Love Edie. Cannot stand Edith, to me it’s just frumpy.

Purpleavocado · 26/08/2022 16:43

Edith shortened to Edie is a lovely name.

Snowiscold · 26/08/2022 16:40

Edith with the short form Edie. Eadie is all kinds of wrong.

MerryChristmasToYou · 26/08/2022 16:20

Just like Edith looks like Ed-ith, or Eden like Ed-en. @pinklavenders ?

pinklavenders · 26/08/2022 16:07

Edie does look like Ed-ee.

Eadee looks like Ee-dee

strawberry2017 · 26/08/2022 14:59

I would ignore your friend. I think that's a terrible way to spell the name.
If some one things Edie is Eddie then they probably wouldn't know how to pronounce Eadie at all!

Mummyme87 · 26/08/2022 14:49

I love Edith and probably Edie for short. It’s my girl name should I ever get pregnant again and it be a girl

AmandaMirandaPanda · 26/08/2022 14:25

I would use Edith or Eden with Edie as a shortening. I don't think people would pronounce it as Eddie - Edi might be confusing, but not Edie.

dmask · 26/08/2022 14:23

Edie is fine on it’s own, Edith sounds completely different, and it might not even get shortened to Edie by her peers.

I don’t think anyone will have trouble pronouncing it, it’s very popular where I live, and I’ve not known anyone to mispronounce it

Yika · 26/08/2022 14:13

Edith - lovely name- then Edie for short.

Eadie is just weird.

RamblingEclectic · 26/08/2022 14:10

I would go Edith rather than Edie on the birth certificate, but I'd probably go Edina as already suggested or Edna, Edera, or Edesia.

I woudn't do Eadith - I wouldn't recommend the Old English spelling, but I also wouldn't do half Old English, half modern when there are other, better Old English names that could be used.

Hoowhoowho · 26/08/2022 14:04

Edith or Eden on BC. I know an Eadie but I think it’s actually less intuitive than Edie.

murasaki · 26/08/2022 13:57

Edina shortened to Edie? Google the bolter, she's a fascinating character.....

TheCheeseBadge · 26/08/2022 13:48

I have an Edith that we shorten to Edie. I've only ever met one other one so it's not common, but it's also well known enough that no one has any problem with it. No one has ever pronounced Edie as Eddie.

CPL593H · 26/08/2022 13:45

My grandfathers (lovely) sister was a lifelong Edie but officially Edith. Both great names so why not give her the "official" so then it's an easier choice if she wants to use it?

Eadie just looks odd and is more likely to be mispronounced than the very well known Edie, IMO.

toastofthetown · 26/08/2022 13:05

Usually my preference is not to use diminutives as full names, but Edith is ghastly so would use Edie in preference to that. Eadie looks strange to me and you’d be swapping a small risk of pronunciation issues for a lifetime of spelling issues.

Cindie943811A · 26/08/2022 12:56

To me Edie sounds like ED so, although simple to spell etc it maybe misheard.
my iPhone defaults to Eddie, btw

Spikeyball · 26/08/2022 12:44

Edith nn Edie. Edith is a strong grown up name. Edie is cute as a nn but I wouldn't want it as my only name.
