Edith or Edie/Eadie?

Moonshine160 · 26/08/2022 09:54

Due in 4 weeks and we have no name! The only name me and DH keep coming back to is Edith/Edie. We both love Edie but not sure if we should officially name her Edith on the birth certificate so that she has more options as Edie sounds quite nicknamey to me? Would you name your daughter Edith or Edie?

A friend suggested just calling her Edie but spelling it “Eadie” so people don’t think her name is pronounced like Eddie. But I think Eadie looks really strange?

Any thoughts please?

I have a coworker named Edith and we call her Edie. The only problem we have is we're in a hospital and when her name comes up we have to distinguish between her and the ED dept.

I say Edith legal and nick Edie. I don't think you need to spell it Eadie.

Or you might go with Eden, and she could still be Edie as a nick.

izzyislington · 02/10/2022 23:14

I have an Edie; she's 17

Believe me, more than half the people she encounters who see her name written down before they hear it spoken, call her Eddie.

And for those who hear it before they see it written, they tend write it as Eddie.

Half of the remaining people, including family members, think she's called Evie.

This has been going on for years. It's very frustrating, not something I foresaw at all when I picked it. Be warned.

Noone should confuse Edie with Eddie?

But lots of words beginning with Ed are pronounced as Ed rather than Eed:

Edit
Edinburgh
education,
educate,
edit,
edition,
editing,
edible,
edge,
edits,
edges,
edict,
edifice,
editor,

So seeing Edie makes many assume

Ed-ie rather than Ead-ie

Edith with Edie as the shortening is beautiful. Eadie just looks a little misspelt.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 02/10/2022 19:11

Most people know how to pronounce Edith so I can't see Edie being too confusing.

Crunchymum · 02/10/2022 19:07

Personally I'd go with Edie. Edith is quite harsh.

Lilacsunflowers · 02/10/2022 09:06

I'd pronounce Ed as Ed and Edie as Ed-ie.

Eadie would make the pronunciation clear.

What did you go for

Great choice as it's my little ones name! Eden, with Edie for short Smile

I love this also, Eden/Edie….wouldn’t spell it Eadie though

CharlieBoo · 28/08/2022 17:06

I love Edie x

pinklavenders · 28/08/2022 14:36

The single consonant 'd' suggests that the first letter is a long sound.

Not necessarily:

Edinburgh - Ed ee (short e)
Edit - Ed it (short e)

So if I see Ed-ie my brain thinks Ed (short e).

The natural pronunciation of Edie is Eddie unless you know it is a diminutive of Edith. Having said that it isn't much in the way of education to learn a different pronunciation.

incorrect

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2022 01:25

No it isn't. The single consonant 'd' suggests that the first letter is a long sound. In Eddie, the double consonant makes the first letter a short 'e' sound.

My little girl is just Edie, not Edith, I love it! We’ve had a couple of people call her Eddie - at the doctors etc, but not many, I just assume they don’t read it properly!

KirstenBlest · 27/08/2022 11:54

@DaisyJoy1 , you would be surprised. Don't assume that just because you wouldn't that nobody else would.
I know at least one female Edi (pron. Eddy)
At least one pp has said she knows an Edie who gets called Eddie.

DaisyJoy1 · 27/08/2022 11:13

Eadie is ridiculous.

Edith nickname Edie is lovely and also NOBODY would have trouble pronouncing Edie. No need to spell it wrong. Edie is a well known and popular name, it’s not like people won’t have heard it before and be confused?

LizzieBet14 · 26/08/2022 23:00

Like Edie - dislike Edith. To me it sounds like an old woman who lives next door (but then I'm not in to Granny Chic names....)

TippledPink · 26/08/2022 22:58

My friend has an Eadie- I like it, don’t see what’s wrong with it?

Love Edie. Cannot stand Edith, to me it’s just frumpy.

really frumpy.

but i think I hate all names that end in th. Edith, Elizabeth, Elspeth, Gwyneth, they all sound so ugly to me.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2022 22:55

Normally I don't like diminutives on the birth certificate, but I much prefer Edie to Edith.

As for Eadie, that's just wrong.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/08/2022 22:42

No to Eadie.
I love Edith and Edie is the obvious nn.
I think of Ediths Cavell , Wharton and Edie Sedgwick; not altogether happy associations but striking and talented.

Suzy14837 · 26/08/2022 22:15

My niece is a teenage Edie.
I love the name but she finds it very frustrating how many people call her either Eddie or Evie, or spell it wrong.
So perhaps Edith is a better option.
I don't like Eadie at all. Looks weird.

Moonshine160 · 26/08/2022 22:07

Thanks everyone. Edith is definitely at the top of the list for now.
