Struggling to find a name we agree on after having an easy time with Euan. Leading contender is Angus, but I'm not completely sold on it

Blair?

Used to love this, now I can't stop seeing Tony Blair's face

Thanks everyone - definitely going to miss some names but:

There's Ross, Stuart, James, Callum and Fraser already in the immediate family (we're large and close, Euan is already the name of a more distant relative!)

Alasdair I quite like, but not sure if Ali is inevitable (probably a 50:50 split in the ones I know). I had dismissed Gregor as I don't like Greg, but the McGregor point is a good one I hadn't clocked! Alexander I think is inevitably an Alex, which I don't mind but I don't love. I prefer Robin to Robert, but DP isn't sure about Rob. Hamish I'm not keen on. Think everyone is right that Lachlan is just asking for disappointment in an English accent. Finlay/Finn I like but there's so many of them locally I'm not sure. Ivor makes me think of Ivor Cutler, which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

DP reminded me that Calvin was on our list, I think solely because DS found my Calvin and Hobbes books and declared he was Calvin. He could pull off Calvin to be fair.

So:
Euan and Angus
Euan and Innes
Euan and Fergus
Euan and Finlay
Euan and Robin
Euan and Calvin
Euan and Kester
Euan and Magnus (which I'm not quite ready to give up on)

I'm going to end up as someone who waits until the baby is born to decide, despite my firm belief that no baby actually suits a normal human name!

I think Alistair, Augus, Douglas (Dougie)?

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/08/2022 10:24

Ooh, not Angus or Hamish - too many pets up here with those names, lol. Love Innes, Ross, Alastair, Robbie, Finlay, Stewart

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2022 10:20

Maybe not - they sound a bit too alike

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2022 10:20

Hugh?

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2022 10:06

Owen is of welsh origin. I don't think the names go together.
I like Ross.

Marotte · 24/08/2022 21:40

I don't think Owen works, it'd cause confusion (with The Name Idiots, at least) especially given that Euan can be hard to pronounce for some people on first (fifth, tenth) meeting. It's a fine name btw! (As is Owen.) It might also be confusing when calling (one of) them in/down, both could sound similar when shouted at a distance. Owen also comes from a different linguistic background, this doesn't necessary matter but they don't seem to fit together, to me.

Marotte · 24/08/2022 21:36

Hamish. Or James. I'm not totally sold on Angus either, but it's not bad IMO.

IsThePopeCatholic · 24/08/2022 21:34

Angus makes me think of beef. Finn or Finlay?

Alasdair?

Whilst dh and I were born and raised in England, we both have strong scottish family history (both our fathers and my mum's family), so we very much decided to honour that heritage with the names we gave DCs. DH, dcs 1and 2 and dgs all have names that have been mentioned on here, but Alasdair was our name that got away. It would have been our choice for a boy if we had gone on to have a third child.

Fleur405 · 24/08/2022 20:42

Oh I love Angus. I know one baby and one almost 3 year old and I don’t think of it as an old man’s name at all.

I also like Lachlan a lot but would not sure I could cope with pronunciation if I lived in England!

what about Alexander?

AliBaliBears · 24/08/2022 20:35

I agree with @Luredbyapomegranate that there are some great Scottish boys names. I love PPs suggestion of Struan but I think it is too close in sound to Euan to work for brothers. But almost all of the other names sound great with Euan...

Euan and Innes
Euan and Angus
Euan and Fraser
Euan and Ross.
Etc etc .... They all sound great together.

I'd be reluctant to use Lachlan if you are in England as the first syllable it will inevitably be pronounced Lock or Lack rather than Loch.

Snugglemonkey · 24/08/2022 19:50

I am in Scotland and every Angus I have met has been young, so I don't have the old man association. In my head Angus is more the wee tousle headed rugby playing outdoorsy boys I have encountered.

NOTHING old man about Angus, very, um, attractive, and strong. And the ones I know look excellent in kilts.

Kester
Struan
Innes
Gillies
Lorne
Alistair
Donal
Donald
Duncan
Douglas
Patrick
Hamish
Joss
Jerome
Francis nn Frank
Saul
Rufus
Joel
Alexander nn Sandy
Robert nn Robbie
Thomas nn Tam

Scotland is the home of some excellent boys names, I have to say

In my (mild) defence my grandad was called Angus, so despite working with some significantly younger ones over the years it is still the main association in my head! Maybe I just need to get people to post pictures of people called Angus below the age of 70 so I'll get over it.

Tam I like but I thought they'd hate me for the inevitable explanation of why it really was Tam and not Tom. Kester I don't think is actually Scottish but I do like it, and Kes is one of the few nick names I wouldn't mind. I prefer names that can't be shortened, and I'm a bit worried if the Gus potential with Angus.

I think I might just associate things too much - I couldn't have a Donald without singing "where's your trousers" every time (never mind the trump association), Lorne will always be a type of sausage and Gillies a weird spelling of the shoes.

Stuart.

I have a Euan!
For DC 2 (but she turned out to be a DD) I liked:
Archie (this was pre Meghan!)
Albie
Ned
Seth
Theo
Maybe it's just aswell we had a DD Grin

I was hoping for a DD purely because I knew we were going to struggle with names for a DS! For DP they were pretty much split 50:50 between Euan and Angus, but I'll feel a bit sad for the second if I can't find a name I love as much as I do Euan.

Thank you! We don't have any ties to Wales or Ireland so it wouldn't feel right to have a name from there, especially since two of the three of us have very Scottish names and all of us share a Mac surname!

My DP has vetoed anything beginning with M add they don't like the alliteration, which is a shame as I do like Magnus and Murray.

Andrew, Fraser, Callum, Cameron, Oran all out because of family members. Rory I have an irrational dislike of.

Innes and Lachlan are on my list. Every so often I worry that Lachlan sounds a bit like lacking when it's pronounced with an English accent (and we're currently in England). Fergus I like, but DP pointed out it's still a -gus name so not that different from Angys. Outside of Scottish names I do really like Adam.

I think I just can't get over Angus as an old man's name!
