This is a greek name I love but I am not keen on the nick names Ria, Ella, or Ellie. Can you think of any cute nick names?

What a beautiful name.
I would go with Lefty, Effie, or Terri for nn.
I'd be thrilled to meet a child with such a wonderful name.

Squirma · 25/08/2022 21:51

Terri

@Heckythump1 pronounced as @VeryQuaintIrene says :) basically phonetic with emphasis on the ‘i’.

E-lef-theh-RI-a

it’s a really beautiful name in Greek and nickname would be Effie. You wouldn’t spell it Eleutheria in English because the ‘u’ would just cause issues. A ‘u’ in Greek is like a cross between a ‘v’ and an ‘f’ (or in my accent it is… might differ regionally).

BUT it’s wayyyy ott for a baby that’s only 1/16 Greek!! That’s really clutching at straws… I considered it way ‘too Greek’ for my 1/4 Greek daughter

VeryQuaintIrene · 25/08/2022 13:51

E-lef-ther-I-a, if she's pronouncing it the Greek way. I still love it!

1/8 would be great grandparents surely?

Not sure I even know where my great grandparents were from.

That's what I thought but was doubting myself because it seemed so tenuous a link - although I know people who have gone with names for their DC which reflect their DCs 1/8th heritage because they 'go with' their surname (aka we like being unique). The boys have no connection to the country and don't speak the language, but I guess the remaining 7/8th UK heritage wasn't interesting enough.

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2022 08:58

If you live in the UK and the child will live in the UK, then I think it's a pretty ridiculous name to saddle your child with based on a very tenuous 1/8th Greek heritage. If you live in Greece then fine.
What does the father think of the name?

Heckythump1 · 25/08/2022 07:56

Still nobody has enlightened us on how this name is actually pronounced! 😛

Does 1/8th mean one of your great grandparents or one of your grandparents?

Elf

Crankley · 24/08/2022 20:31

It's ghastly. If you love it so much change your own name and find somethiong better for your child.

I'm 1/8 Irish because I once drank half a Guinness 🤣

Oh. She said on page 1 she's lived in Greece for a while. Maybe she meant in the past

I hope she comes back to clarify because if she means in the past it's about as relevant as her being 1/8 Greek Grin

Didiplanthis · 24/08/2022 19:52

Effie or Elfie

Antarcticant · 24/08/2022 18:45

Fay

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/08/2022 15:50

How do you pronounce it? That might help.

Thera?

FleursSechees · 24/08/2022 15:47

VeryQuaintIrene · 24/08/2022 15:29

It really isn't hard to pronounce, surely? I love it. Efi would be an obvious diminutive.

She said she lives in Greece, so presumably pronunciation wont be a problem.

OP, obviously this name wouldn't go down well in the UK, but if you live in Greece and people are familiar with the name over there then go for it! Effie/Thera would be lovely nicknames too.

I agree with those who think kids will call her elephant

ChagSameachDoreen · 24/08/2022 15:23

Leftie.

dramalamma84 · 24/08/2022 15:12

El/Effie
